Migrate From Oracle 10gR2 In Windows To 11gR2 In Linux

Jun 22, 2012

Question: to migrate from oracle 10gR2 in Windows to oracle 11gR2 in Linux . Steps are:

1.     need to expdp all schemas/users from oracle 10gR2 in Windows,
2.     then impdp each schema/user into oracle 10gR2 in Linux first,
3.     then upgrade the oracle 10gR2 in Linux to oracle 11gR2 in Linux ?
4.     Do I need to pre-create all the same tablespaces first in oracle 10gR2 in Linux ?

Is it correct ? or I can migrate straight all schemas/users from oracle 10gR2 in Windows to oracle 11gR2 in Linux using impdp ?

Installation :: Live Server Migration For 11gR2 Oracle?

Oct 15, 2013

Migrating the LIVE server to a NEW virtual machine.2 databases reside on the LIVE server, one runs in archivelog mode &other no archivelog modeOld server-Windows 2003 32 bit, oracle databases 11.1.0.7.0New-Windows 2008 64 bit,Oracle databases should be 11.2.0.3.0Just want to clarify the following1)When installing oracle, what would be the best option-create and configure a database / install software only(later create database using dbca) ?why? Just want to know if there will be a difference at all in these 2 methods.2)What is the best way to migrate the data in the database, datapump or rman (rman takes full backup in the present "live" so this can be moved to "new live" and can be recovered)? What would be the method with least downtime?(Once the data is transferred, the database in the "old server"will be deleted)3)The structure of the data files (folder path) are going to be different in the old and new servers, so I have to precreate the tablespaces, so will the impdp fail in this case?

I doubt Oracle will hear my plea - educational purposes only - so given I want access to the software only.

Server Utilities :: Migrate 10gR2 To 11gR2 On Different Server

Jul 11, 2011

Here are the cards I've been dealt:

I've inherited a 10.2.0.1.0 instance running on a windows 2003 box; running fine, no problems other than system has been in production since 2005 and has gotten pretty old and tired. This old box has one tablespace on it... called "gateway".

I've installed 11.2.0.1 on a new (Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise 64-bit) server and created an empty database also called "gateway".

Now to move the data and views, objects, everything.

I've read up on a variety of migration techniques (oops, I mean "upgradation" LOL) and can follow the steps...

In short, I want to pull everything off of server a (10.2) and put it into production on server b (11.2). There seems to be quit a few options.

1. install 10.2 on my NEW server (server b), move the data over and get everything running, then install 11.2 and have it upgrade the database as part of the installation process.
2. drop the empty tablespace on server b, stop the database on server a, copy the files over from the old to the new home, run DBUA or set the compatibility attribute...
3. run some type of server a to server b utility that can bridge the two over the network. Some type of mirroring technique?
4. run file export scripts on server a, copy files to server b and run various import scripts

I tend to think that option 3 would be the best because both instances are in great health and are running right now. Is there a mechanism that allows the 11.2 instance to see and upgrade from a different server?

Error In OS Level Authentication For Oracle 11gR2 Database Access?

Mar 18, 2011

We have an issue regarding OS level authentication to access Oracle 11gR2(11.2.0.1) database.

Our environment -
UNIX - AIX 5.3 (OS user id password is having kerberos security).
Oracle 11.2.0.1 (32 bit client) installed in server 1
Oracle 11.2.0.1 (64 bit server) installed in server 2.
Everything works fine when we created a general userid test_db in the database and connect through sqlplus test_db@dbname.

But when we try to use the option of OS level authentication using "sqlplus /", it throws following error and could not be connected.

ERROR: ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist

I have created the same OS user name in database (with external password authentication) with prefix OPS$. we have set ORACLE_SID as well.

Oracle Database Concepts 11gr2 - Incremental Checkpoints Behavior?

May 3, 2012

Oracle database concepts 11gr2 manual states that "An incremental checkpoint is a type of thread checkpoint partly intended to avoid writing large numbers of blocks at online redo log switches. DBWn checks at least every three seconds to determine whether it has work to do. When DBWn writes dirty buffers, it advances the checkpoint position, causing CKPT to write the checkpoint position to the control file, but not to the data file headers."

As i have understand the DBWR write DIRTY BUFFER (that are under active checkpoint requests in the ACQ) to the datafiles from The Buffer Checkpoint Queues and after that the CKPT process may write the checkpoint RBA to the control files.[URL]...

The CKPT porcess write the chekpoint RBA to the controlfile after that the DBWR write the Dirty BUFFER in the datafiles, so as i understand at some point the datafiles containt block with higher RBA than the controle files. am i wrong ?

So if the instance craches before the CKPT record the chekpoint RBA in the controlfile what will be the recover behavior. Will the redo record be reapplied from the last recoded chekpoint RBA in the controlfile to the tail of the log ?

Networking And Gateways :: Oracle 11gR2 Database - Performance Difference Between Windows PC And On VMware

Feb 9, 2012

We are having major differences in performance when accessing an Oracle 11gR2 database from two different environments.

I won't sadden you with the gory details of the full application but I will use an indicative example of our problem.

We have SQL Developer in both environments. In each of these SQL Developer instances is a defined a connection to the same database on another machine. So there is the PC looking at a database and a virtual instance looking at the same database.

Selecting the '+' sign next to 'tables' for that connection, on the PC the list of four tables comes back in 4 seconds but on the virtual instance the list of the same four tables comes back in 1 minute and 50 seconds.

This sort of timing issue is repeatable for all accesses to the Oracle database on the third machine.

Upgrade :: From Linux 32bit To 64bit - 10gR2 Database?

Dec 26, 2012

I need to do the following:

(1) Move my 10gR2 database from 32-bit Linux to 11gR2 64-Bit Linux (using an RMAN backup from 10gR2 restored on the 64-bit machine) then

(2) Bring up the database on 64-bit hardware and then upgrade to 11.2.0.3 (64-Bit) [Without installing the 10.2.0.3 64-Bit software]

Haven't tried restoring to 11.2.0.3 from a RMAN 10.2.0.3 backup. I was trying not to have to install the Oracle 10.2.0.3 software for 64-bit on the 64-bit machine. Was hoping to go directly to 11.2.0.3 (64-bit).

Oracle DB 10gR2 Installation

Jul 8, 2011

I try to install th a oracle 10gR2 database to a SuSe Linux 11.4.

I try to install to tha local machine, not to a remote host. But when I start the installation every time I get the next error message:

CODECan't connect to X11 window server using '' as the value of the DISPLAY variable.

Unable to start an interactive install session because of the following error:Can't connect to X11 window server using '' as the value of the DISPLAY variable. The DISPLAY environment variable should be set to <hostname or IP address>:<screen>, where the <screen> is usually '0.0'.

Depending on the Unix Shell, you can use one of the following commands as examples to set the DISPLAY environment variable:

- For csh: % setenv DISPLAY 192.168.1.128:0.0
- For sh, ksh and bash: $ DISPLAY=192.168.1.128:0.0; export DISPLAY

Use the following command to see what shell is being used:

echo $SHELL
Use the following command to view the current DISPLAY environment variable setting:
echo $DISPLAY

- Make sure that client users are authorized to connect to the X Server. To enable client users to access the X Server, open an xterm, dtterm or xconsole as the user that started the session and type the following command:

% xhost +
To test that the DISPLAY environment variable is set correctly, run a X11 basedprogram that comes with the native operating system such as 'xclock':
% <full path to xclock... see below>

If you are not able to run xclock successfully, please refer to your PC-X Server or OS vendor for further assistance. Typical path for 'xclock': ''

I think that I don't need the x server when I install the product to the local machine. But every time I get this message.
