Oracle 9i Dbms-redefinition?

Oct 29, 2010

I am trying to redefine a table as to get clear of the thousands of chained and migrated rows. The darn table contains a lob column.I am trying to complete the process with the dbms_redefinition package.

I've createad the temporary table with all option to nologging. I've started the redefinition at midnight and it not yet completed and I can't find why it is taking so long. I've done the process with a table, similar in size in a Dev environement and it took at most two hours. In production, the process has been going on for 10h30 now.

I can see my tablespace size increase from time to time and when I querry the dba_segments to find out the size of both tables my temporary table is now 4 times the size of the original table.

SQL & PL/SQL :: Change Column Datatype From CLOB To Varchar2

Jun 22, 2012

I have to change the datatype of a column from CLOB to varchar2, without changing the order of the columns. The table has no data.
I could find any other way other than dropping the CLOB columns and then adding new columns with varchar2 datatype. But this changes the order of the columns in the table.

Application Express :: ORA-01439 / Column To Be Modified Must Be Empty To Change Datatype

Sep 4, 2012

I need to modify the column type that already has data in it, i need it change varchar to number then The datas entered have $ and , (e.g $3,200). I need the $ and , removed with column type set to numbers.

When i currently do this i get the following error:

The TABLE operation was not successful for the following reason:

ORA-01439: column to be modified must be empty to change datatype

I've tried unloading the data and loading the data using the spreadsheet, cut and past and csv file but both give me more errors, so i just want that one column modified.

Error On Table Redefinition With LOB Segments

May 25, 2012

share what can we do to over come this issue?We are running 11.2.0.2 on IBM Aix. I am trying to do an redef and this is what i see:

Received an ORA-1555 error on a table redefinition with LOB segments.
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-12008: error in materialized view refresh path
ORA-01555: snapshot too old: rollback segment number with name "" too small

[code]...

As the ORA-01555 error does have a name we know that this is LOB related.We are using Automatic Undo mode and have RETENTION specifed on the LOB segments in both the source and target tables for the redefinion.The LOB segments in the source table are stored out-of-line (DISABLE STORAGE IN ROW) while the LOB segements in the target table are stored in-line (ENABLE STORAGE in row).There are a very large number of updates occuring on the source table. The table is quite large and the redefintion failed after 36 hours.

In oracle documentation we're finding conflicting information as to whether the UNDO_RETENTION database parameter affects the LOB storage RETENTION parameter, and therefore whether increasing our UNDO_RETENTION will be useful in this issue. The SQL manual indicates that it does affect this saying 'Oracle Database uses the value of the UNDO_RETENTION initialization parameter to determine the amount of committed undo data to retain in the database.'

Our current undo_retention is set to 21600.

How can we resolve this ORA-1555 error?

SQL & PL/SQL :: Unable To Drop Interim Table After Redefinition Process

May 11, 2012

I performed the Table Redefinition process on one of my transaction tables. I wanted to redefine the existing table to a new table with partitions. Everything worked fine until i reached the last step where we had to drop the interim table. Now in between the redefinition , we created the interim table with partition along with the constraints and indexes and then atlast ran the "dbms_redefinition.finish_redef_table" proc to finish the redefinition.

And after that when I tried to drop the interim table , I am getting the below error message

"ERROR at line 1: ORA-02449: unique/primary keys in table referenced by foreign keys"

So this means all the constraints from my actual table were swapped with the interim table and hence I am getting this error.So is this a normal case or I have missed something while performing the redefinition? If thats normal then should i Just Drop table tablename CASCADE CONSTRAINTS?

Server Administration :: Change Datatype To HEX Notation / Base 64

Jul 10, 2013

I am currently in the process of migrating our database from US7ASCII to AL32UTF8 using DMU.

I am stuck at a point where I have encrypted data that, when the conversion happens, will be destroyed. Oracle suggests to move the data which is currently stored in VARCHAR2 datatype, to a "character set safe way" like hex notation or base64 before converting.

Where '00001234' is the Invoice , '12222' is Netamount field and highlighted in red is the $ amount for that invoice.

The only data i need query to return 12222 (netamount)= $amount. I tried using substr  select substr((TESTDATA),19,26)test from TABLEA; But this gives me the only the first row but not other amount which have different positions.

Here is the desired output

Application Express :: Retrieving Column Of Datatype RAW(16)

I have a table defined where some columns are of the datatype RAW(16). In fact these are foreign keys to other tables. Our company has a policy that all primary keys are of the datatype RAW(16). Not much I can do about that.

Now I want to retrieve all columns of a certain row in that table and just visualize the foreign keys in hex format. All values are filled out nicely, except the columns with datatype RAW(16). Is there something special I have to do to retreive and display these? I defined an item as text-field for these, but this doesn't seem to be working...

SQL & PL/SQL :: DBMS Scheduler Doesn't Support Synonym Table (DBLINK Used)

May 12, 2011

we are facing an issue with the dbms scheduler jobs, which is not processing the synonym which is created via dblink from anthoer schema.

Let me explain the situation.

Table in Schema :APP_COMMON DB: APPL
-------------------------------------

CREATE TABLE TEST_LOG (A VARCHAR2(10));

INSERT TEST_LOG VALUES ('TESTED');

GRANT SELECT ON TEST_LOG to APP_GEN ;

Table in Schema :APP_GEN DB: APPL
-------------------------------------

CREATE SYNONYM TEST_LOG FOR APP_COMMON.TEST_LOG;

SELECT * from TEST_LOG;

-- it returns the value

Table in Schema :APP_GEN DB: REPORT
-------------------------------------

This is the different DB (we have 2 DB's, one for report db and one for application DB). here we create the DB link (connected DB menthod) . Since we have the password sync between the databases, we create the DBLINK without user id and password.

CREATE DATABASE LINK "APPL_LINK"
USING 'APPL' ;

CREATE SYNONYM TEST_LOG FOR TEST_LOG@APPL_LINK;

SELECT * from TEST_LOG;
--it returns the value.

Now in the same DB, we have a scheduler which will run for every min.

Now Scheduler is not selecting this table. Rather not processing the synonym(TEST_LOG). Not able to capture the exception also.

SQL & PL/SQL :: Two Columns Can Have Long Datatype In Table?

Apr 27, 2010

I have question related to LONG datatype. Actually from google and get to know that one table can have only one LONG datatype when i searched for reason . i got these resons:-

With 9i (I believe) and later versions, Oracle deprecates using the long datatype in favor of the lob (clob, nclob and blog) datatypes. It is only supported for backward compatibility.

Restriction:- It can not be used in create type as an attribute of the defined type.

It can not be used in where conditions.

There can be no indexes on long columns.

Regular Expression are not possible.

long can not be returned from a stored function.

SQL can not call functions that have an attribute of type long.

And even more restrictions.

So I want to know that is only reason because of that Oracle doesn't allow us to make two Column or is there any strong reason which make it more logical Like storing of data in Row blocks or some thing else.

Datatype Modification For Table With Huge Data

Aug 11, 2011

Below is my requirement.

Need to change the precision of a column in a existing table. Statistics about the table

* has over 130 columns
* More than 300 million records
* Column to modify is #121 which has data
* No primary key defined

Since the column has data, it is not possible to modify with a simple Alter.

Second option - create temp column in same table, update from original, put null in original, alter, update back from temp, drop the temp column. This approach is very expensive and time consuming.

Also the Column ID needs to preserved as #121.
