Performance Tuning :: Compare Current Row Values With Previous One Until Mismatch

We have employee salary table which will have salary of an employee on daily basis (only working days). Below is the table structure:
emp_salary
----------
emp_id NUMBER(15) NOT NULL
effective_date DATE NOT NULL
salary NUMBER(15) NOT NULL
Primary key - emp_id, effective_date
This table is yearly partitioned
I have to find out how long the salary is not changed for an employee from given date, and last salary. I am using below query to do this:
WITH salary_tab AS
(SELECT effective_date, salary,
(CASE
WHEN (LAG (salary) OVER (PARTITION BY emp_id ORDER BY effective_date ASC) =
salary
)
THEN 0
ELSE 1
END
) changed_ind
FROM emp_salary
WHERE emp_id = 12345
[code]....
The cost of this query is 1677 and it is taking around 60 msec to complete. When I run this query for around 2000 employees in a loop it is taking around 3 minutes to complete.
The main bottleneck of this query is in the with clause where I am processing the entire history instead of stopping after first change.

For emp_id 1, if we ran this query for 10/31/2011, then it has to compare the 10/31 salary with 10/29 and do the same until the salary mismatches. In this case, salary salary mismatch occurs on 10/20, so the stale salary period is from 10/31 to 10/21 which is 7 days.Below query will give that result:
CODE
WITH salary_tab AS
(SELECT effective_date, salary,

I've been searching the web for examples of how to run a trace. It's needed for a session different then current in trace LEVEL 4 (I need the bind variables values in the trace).
Unfortunately, I couldn't trace with DBMS_SUPPORT.START_TRACE_IN_SESSION, I understand that this is because it was only introduced in Oracle 11g.
how can i trace a session in level 4 on Oracle 10g for another session?

create table a(sourcerow number(2), test_level number(2), dpn varchar2(1), qty number(5)); T
he insert scripts are as follows:
insert into a values(1,3,'Y',5); insert into a values(2,2,'Y',4); insert into a values(3,3,'N',3); insert into a values(4,4,'Y',3); insert into a values(5,1,'N',6); insert into a values(6,2,'N',5); insert into a values(7,2,'Y',4); insert into a values(8,3,'N',2); insert into a values(9,4,'Y',2); insert into a values(10,1,'Y',3); . SQL>select * from v$version; Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.1.0.7.0 - 64bit Production
My logic should have the output as follows without 5th column: sourcerowleveldpnqtyremark13Y522Y4This row in main table shouldn't be displayed in the query result as it has
dpn='N'44Y3*3=9In this row qty=9 will bedisplayed.
It will compare the value of level column with its previous row level col,if it is the parent of the current(ex.current is 4 and previous is 3 parent of 4),then it will check the dpn of previous row ,if dpn='N' then qty of parent will be multiplied with qty of current row and displayed under qty column.this row will not be displayed as dpn='N'this row will not be displayed as dpn='N'72Y4*6=24in its previous row level value is same so it will check the previous to previous row where level is 1(parent of current row) and dpn='N' ,then it will multiply the qty of that row with current row and display the value in qty column.this row will not be displayed as dpn='N'94Y2*2=4In this row qty=4 will be displayed. It will compare the value of level column with its previous row level col,if it is the parent of the current(ex.current is 4 and previous is 3 parent of 4),then it will check the dpn of previous row ,if dpn='N' then qty of parent will be multiplied with qty of current row and displayed under qty column.101Y3It will not check for the previous rows as level 1 doesn't have any parent.

I've 2 identical tables of 300+ columns each, and each of table is having pk as combination of 2 fields. There are some fields where data is not matching. need a query which will use these two tables and return the following-
1. primary key columns
2. null value for fields where data is matching
3. data for columns where there is data mismatch.

I need to update the current column with sum of the previous column values. Following are the creation scripts
DROP TABLE TEST_LOG;
CREATE TABLE TEST_LOG

[Code]....
Above query is working fine to retrieve the previous column values. But when we are updating the SUM_PRE_COLS column with those values it's not working fine.
I tried by using the following query
UPDATE TEST_LOG T SET SUM_PRE_COLS =
( SELECT LAG(T2.KEY0, 1, 0) OVER(ORDER BY T2.KEY0) + LAG(T2.KEY1, 1, 0) OVER(ORDER BY T2.KEY0)
FROM TEST_LOG T2 WHERE T2.ROWID= T.ROWID);

We have database with multiple fields containing NULL values and in many queries we have NVL function which in turn is suppressing the index usage when in fact it is really essential (selectying very few rows from massive data) instead of creating lot of Function based indexes (NVL) or composite indexes with (nullable_column, constant) I am thinking of settting a default value for most of the fields In that regard I have some queries :
Which approach is better - setting default value for the fields or updating the fields with default value and modyfing inserts to take care of future data? Though altering table and modifing column to set default value looks better considering it will take care of data inserted in the future, it will invalidate the subroutines.I understand in 10g both statement will generate lot of undo (though in 11g, I heard things changed for setting default value of a column) How to take care of all the queries which are using the criteria 'where column1 IS NULL' or 'where column1 IS NOT NULL'. It will be really difficult task to manually change each and every occurrence of such condition even using user_source.
Finally for numeric values say for ID field which starts from 1 onwards 2,3,4 etc, we can set 0 as sensible default so that the performance is not affected.
Is there such precaution for varchar2 field purely from performance point of view?

Table being updated CI_ADJ_CHAR column CHAR_VAL_FK1
Table from which values will be used CK_ADJ columns (cx_id, ci_id)
The CI_ADJ_CHAR.CHAR_VAL_FK1 values match CK_ADJ.CX_ID and should be updated with the value CK_ADJ.CI_ID.
The CK_ADJ table has 1.3 million rows and both the columns have indexes defined. Table definitiuon mentioned below
The CI_ADJ_CHAR table has 14 million rows and will update 1 million rows and has an index on the ADJ_ID column but not on the CHAR_VAL_FK1 column.

Source Table:
EMP_NO EMP_CODE
1 'A'
1 'D'
1 'E'
1 'F'
2 'S'
2 'A'
2 'W'
2 'Q'
3 'A'
3 'T'
3 'D'
3 'E'
4 'D'
4 'A'
I want to load only data which has EMP_CODE as A and doesn't have subsequent 'E' or 'F' in it. In the above source you can see EMP_NO 2 and 4 satisfy the condition and rest wont. So i want the output data like below.
Desired output:
EMP_NO EMP_CODE
2 'A'
4 'A'

I have two tables which have identical schemas, one table (tbl_store) is used to hold the latest version, and the other table (tbl_store_audit) holds previous versions. When the latest record is updated, it is inserted into the tbl_store_audit table as a revision, and the updated details are used as the latest record.
For example: The latest version is held in tbl_store, however the tbl_store_audit may hold 5 records which are the past records used before changes were made - these are seen as revisions.
I want to be able to compare what has changed between each revision in the tbl_store_audit table. For example: Out of the 10 columns, the change between revision 1 and revision 2 was the size from XL to XXL. The change between revision 3 and revision 4 was the size XS to M and price 4.99 to 10.99, and so on.
Eventually i will create an APEX report that will show the user the revision number and what was changed from and to.
I seen in a previous post i need to note my oracle version: Oracle version 10.2.0.4.0

Looking to understand the difference between instance tuning and database tuning.
What is the difference between these two tuning exercises? I understand that an instance is memory based structures (logical) where as database consists of physical structures.
However, how does one tune a database the physical structure? Does it have to do with file placements/block sizes etc. Would you agree that a lot of that is taken care by ASM now in 11g? What tools are required/available (third party as well as oracle supplied) for these types of tuning scenarios?

I have a problem with Between clause used in where statement to compare two string variable.
Query is like this,
select item_code, item_deacrption
from itm_master, invoce_det
where im_code = item_code
AND invd_item_number BETWEEN (:startNum) AND (:endNum)
Here invd_item_number is a DB field and is of type varchar2(41), and (:startNum),(:endNum) are of same type.
now invd_item_number has one value '001003002001'
if we give :startNum = '001003001002' and :endNum = '001003004006'
:startNum and :endNum is composed of separate field values (ie, 1st 3 character shows color code, next 3 for catagory, next 3 for size etc). These codes are entered separately and are combined at run time.
it is still fetching the invd_item_number with value '001003002001'. (the last set of character(type code) in the :startNum is greater than invd_item_number's type code value. But it is smaller than the previous code (size code), that's why it is fetching).
But how can i get around this as i don't need that value to be fetched.

Using 11gR2, windows 7 client machine. I need to update the table missing_volume (below), where I need to calculate the estimated_missing column. The calculation of estimated_missing column for current month needs previous month numbers (as commented inside the code below). I want the output like the first table. Notice the records start from January, hence estimated_missing for January can't be calculated, but for the the rest of the months it can be done by simply changing 'yr' and 'mnth' (commented inside the code towards the end).
yr mnth location volume actual_missing expected_missing estimated_missing
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2013 January loc1 48037 24 57
2013 February loc1 47960 3660 53 24
2013 March loc1 55007 78 57 28
2013 April loc1 54345 72 58 77The code:
UPDATE missing_volume g
[Code]....
The code does calculate correct number for 'estimated_missing' as I run the code for each month, but the problem is while updating the current month it also erases the record for previous month. E.g. as can be seen below, after I updated April the column only has the record for April, previous month record is gone, similarly updating March removed February, etc. I can't understand why it's happening!! Here is the output I get:
yr mnth location volume actual_missing expected_missing estimated_missing
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2013 January loc1 48037 24 57
2013 February loc1 47960 3660 53
2013 March loc1 55007 78 57
2013 April loc1 54345 72 58 77
why it's happening (I mean where is the flaw in the code) and how to get the desired output (first table).

How the length of column width effects index performance?
For example if i had IOT table emp_iot with columns:
(id number,
job varchar2(20),
time date,
plan number)
Table key consist of(id, job, time)
Column JOB has fixed list of distinct values ('ANALYST', 'NIGHT_WORKED', etc...).
What performance increase i could expect if in column "job" i would store not names but concrete numbers identifying job names.
For e.g. i would store "1" instead 'ANALYST' and "2" instead 'NIGHT_WORKED'.

I have a question about database fragmentation.I know that fragmentation can reduce performance in query times. The blocks are distributed in many extents and scans process takes a long time. Oracle engine have to locate the address of the next extent..
I want to know if there is any system view in which you can check if your table or index has high fragmentation. If it's needed I will have to re-create, move or rebulid the table or index, but before I want to know if the degree of fragmentation is high.
Any useful script or query to do this, any interesting oracle system view?

There is a simple way to increase the performance of a query by reducing the row-size of the table it hits. I used it in the past by dividing the table into smaller parts and querying respective smaller table in each query.
what is this method called ? just forgot the method and can't recall it. what this type of row-reduction optimization is called ?

Testing our 9i to 11g upgrade, we've imported the entire DB into the new machine. We've found that certain procedures are really suffering performance problems. BUT, we've also found, that if we check out a production copy of the procedure from our source code control, and reinstall it, the performance issue goes away. Just alter the procedure and recompiling does NOT work.
The new machine where the 11g database exists is slightly different than the source, but it's not like we have this problem with every procedure. It's only a couple.
any possible reason that we'd have to re-install a procedure to correct a performance problem?
