I am using Oracle 11g Release 11.2.0.1.0
OS: windows
I am taking an example of EMP table in a scott schema.
EMP_1 is also a same structure of EMP.
Here is the Insert statement used.(i might get where clauses etc in the real scenario i am taking a simple example here)
INSERT INTO SCOTT.EMP_1(JOB,ENAME,EMPNO) SELECT JOB,ENAME,EMPNO FROM SCOTT.EMP
table EMP is having around 25 million records.
i would like to do a commit after every 1000 records. as my redo log is getting full if i use a single commit at the end.
Quote:pls note: Increasing of redo log is not possible as of now
is there anyway i can acheive this without cursor bulk collect.

I'm working with Oracle 10g.
I have a table like this;
ID Amount Date
123 5000 Oct-07-2011
123 null Oct-09-2011
124 7000 Oct-14-2011
124 null Oct-17-2011
124 null Oct-24-2011
What I'm trying to do here is loop thruogh the records and update the amount that's null with the previous amount with the same ID.

I'm running 11.2.0I am looking at tuning a sql statement, and the question was brought up as to the max inserts per transactions in 11g, and if it exceeds 1000.I haven't found a solid answer yet, but I thought that 10g was higher than 1000.
My first thought was to implement a commit loop on every 1000 rows, as that is how things were handled in the past.But I found an article that talks about redo logs and performance and how it's a horrible practice to do the commit loop.
What I haven't found is what is the better methodology in doing this?My scenario could encounter inserts as much as 20,000 at a time.

I am using Merge statement to copy data from one table to other,
merge into tabA a
using tabB b
on a.id = b.id
when match
update (
)
when not matched
(insert )
This is working all fine, as SQL, but when there is large volume, it blows out as there are intermediate commits for this ?

I have made a correlated update statement using rowid. Find my attachment. Its updating all columns which i wanted but issue is that its not updating in 1st commit.
Suppose 6 rows is to be updated, then in 1st commit its updating 1 record, then in 2nd commit its updating 2nd record and so on. And in Toad its showing 6 rows updated in 1st commit, then 5 rows updated in 2nd commit and 1 rows updated in last record. I want that all records to be updated in first commit only.

I have to optimize a batch job which returns > 1 lakh records . I have a commit limit being passed . I am planning to divide the cursor records for processing as follows. If the cursor suppose returns 1000 rows and the commit limit passed is 200 , then i want to fetch 200 records first , bulk collect them into associative arrays and then bulk insert into target table.
After this is done, i will fetch the next 200 records from the cursor and repeat the processing. I would like to know how i can divide the cursor records, and fetch "limit" number of records at a time and also be able to go to the next 200 recs of the cursor next time.

Oracle DB Version - 11g XE I scheduled a job using dbms_scheduler which will insert a record into table T for each minute. I didnt mention COMMIT inside my procedure but records are being commited after each successful execution. How come it is possible. Here is my code.
SQL> create table t ( empno number, creation_date date);
Table created
SQL> create or replace procedure test_proc 2 is 3 4 begin 5 6 insert into t values (1,sysdate); 7 8 end; 9 /
Procedure created

PL/SQL procedure successfully completed
SQL> select * from t;

I can work with 'straight' query's etc., but now I want to make a query with a loop. I have made a simple one to demonstrate what I want but the real one is working is working by it self but I want to get it work with a loop.
This is the simpel version:
DECLARE
P_UID NUMBER;
Max_UID NUMBER := 42220;
BEGIN
P_UID := 42210;
LOOP
select *
from contract lc
where lc.UIDCONTRACT = P_UID;
P_UID := P_UID + 1;
EXIT WHEN P_UID > Max_UID;
END LOOP;
END;
The error I get is:
Line 10, column 9:
PLS-00428: an INTO clause is expected in this SELECT Statement.
So I know you can declare a variable and then CONTRACTID INTO v_contractID.
But if I have to put every field in a variable what is then the advantage of a loop. So I expect that I'm on the wrong road and not understand how this works.

I wrote the following block :
set serveroutput on
declare
rec employees%rowtype;
cur SYS_REFCURSOR;
begin
open cur for 'select * from employees where rownum<:a' using 4;
for i in cur
[code]....
It gave errors if we execute is as such, but worked when I commented out the for loop and instead de-commented the simple loop. Does that mean that FOR cannot be used to loop through the records of a ref cursor ?

a project I'm working on. I normally work in SQL Server, so I'm a little stuck on this one.
I have a temp table (tmp_stack) with four columns:
Floor [varchar]
Unit [varchar]
Block [number]
BlockStart [number]
BlockEnd [number]
BlockStart and BlockEnd are currently NULL. What I need to do is loop through the table for each Floor and update BlockStart and BlockEnd for each Unit depending on how many blocks they use and how many have been used by prior units on that floor.
For example:
There are three units on Floor #1: 1A, 1B, and 1C.
1A = 5 blocks
1B = 3 blocks
1C = 2 blocks
For 1A, BlockStart should = 1 and BlockEnd should = 5
For 1B, BlockStart should = 6 and BlockEnd should = 8
For 1C, BlockStart should = 9 and BlockEnd should = 10
And everything should reset back to the beginning on successive floors.
In T-SQL, I would use a cursor, and I assume I need to do the same kind of thing in Oracle, but I can't figure out the syntax.

Can this be optimized, in dev and Ist we didn't realize since 1000 rows were there, but in PERF since 2 mil rows are there this is taking a long time,
SET SERVEROUTPUT ON
DECLARE
counter number := 0;
CURSOR insertValues IS select roleid, productcode, functioncode, typecode, restrictiontype, value1 from restrictions where actionmode = 'INSERT';
[code]...
can this be done in a single update since Selects /Updates are happening on same table

I can't seem to get away from writing php scripts to handle the update. I want to learn to use procedures more. What I have is a table like this:
courses(
id number(16) pk,
Division_title varchar2(100),
department_title varchar2(100)
I also have a temp table where I upload updated data into from time to time it looks like this
load_updates_courses(
id number(16) pk,
div_desc varchar2(100),
dep_desc varchar2(100)
)
Currently when I need to update the courses table, I write a php script to do the update. But what I really would like to do is write a procedure I could call to handle this.
I figured I need to loop over the recordsets in the update tables then do a update but I can't figure out how to get started with the plsql.

1> 20 million recs
update mycustomer set update_time=add_months(sysdate,240) where seq_num = 1;
commit;
2> 60 million recs
update mycustomer set update_time=sysdate-seq_num where seq_num <> 1;
commit;
Q1> Is there any way to improve performance
Q2> Will parallel dml improve performance
Q2> Would a pl/sql cursor make any difference in speed.

This is my query:
UPDATE t_tt_hours a
SET a.sak_request = (
SELECT b.sak_request
FROM t_requests b, co c
[Code]...
The problem I am having is that it is updating all rows even when it is pulling back a null value for b.sak_request. I've tried adding b.sak_request is not null to the select statement like this:
UPDATE t_tt_hours a
SET a.sak_request = (
SELECT b.sak_request
FROM t_requests b, co c
WHERE b.nam_eds_tracking_id = c.id_dir_track_eds
[Code]...
but it doesn't seem to make a difference. The reason I need to do this is that the difference between where it matches with a valid (non-null) value is 396 rows vs. 12,484 rows which is too time consuming to run on my page.

I have one doubt about update command in sql. How to update the multiple rows with different values using update statment.
Eg:-
SQL> set linesize 500;
SQL> set pagesize 500;
SQL> select * from emp;
SQL> select empno,ename,sal from emp;
SQL> select empno,ename,sal from emp;
EMPNO ENAME SAL
---------- ---------- ----------
7839 KING 5000
7698 BLAKE 2850
7782 CLARK 2450
7566 JONES 2975
7654 MARTIN 1250
[Code]....
The above table contains 14 records. Now i would like to update the salary column with different values like
EMPNO SAL
===========
7839 18000
7698 20000
7782 5000
...
...
...
7934 25000
How to update above values with single update query.

I am trying to update records in the target table based on the records coming in from source. For instance, if the incoming record is present in the target table I would update them in the target else I would simply insert. I have over one million records in my source while my target has 46 million records. The target table is partitioned based on calendar key. I implement this whole logic using Informatica. Looking at the informatica session log I find that the informatica code is perfectly fine but its in the update part it takes long time (more than 5 days to update one million records). find the TARGET TABLE query and the UPDATE query as below.
TARGET TABLE:
CREATE TABLE OPERATIONS.DENIAL_REGRET_FACT
(
CALENDAR_KEY INTEGER NOT NULL,
DAY_TIME_KEY INTEGER NOT NULL,
SITE_KEY NUMBER NOT NULL,
RESERVATION_AGENT_KEY INTEGER NOT NULL,
LOSS_CODE VARCHAR2(30) NOT NULL,
PROP_ID VARCHAR2(5) NOT NULL,
