SQL & PL/SQL :: Locking Views (rows Of Data While Updating)

Nov 10, 2011

I have a set of rows based on a complex view from multiple table.

I will be updating some of its columns from front-end . Is there any possible ways to lock those rows of data while updating and no other users can update it;

Creating Self-updating Views With Data Selection?

Aug 4, 2011

I've got a Source Data in complex relational formFor reporting purposes, a simpler, less normalized data model is neededThere are two Target views from the Source Data: one of them with full access to all datathe second one with access only to a subset of the data (same columns, but not all the records)For both target groups, a separate schema shall be available, each containing only relevant dataToday, these schemas are physically located on the same DB instance and host as the source dataA daily refresh is sufficientA later relocation of the reporting schemes to other DB instances shall be possible without major changes neededOracle 10g should be used I tried to accomplish this using Materialized Views (Materialized seems better since there will be sometime a need to have all the apropriate data somewhere else, geographically, AND it provides Complete Refresh from the Source), but there is a problem: when creating the MV there is a possibility to type 'SELECT *' - but after execution it changes into real columns names. It is important because later after adding a new column into Source Data it WILL NOT appear in MV after refresh.

I also thought about Data Guard, Streams and RAC, but I think only in the Materialized Views you may choose the data to show (rows, columns).

Table Locking When Many Users Retrieve Data

Sep 2, 2009

I have a "select ... into" in my PL/SQL and it doesn't retreive any data(I suppose just certain columns because if it doesn't retreive a row then the PL/SQL should throw an error) when there are many users accessing this table. It shouldn't be some table locking right? Because if it is, it should wait until the table is available then it will retreive data. Currently it just proceeds with the PL/SQL and selecting nothing in that query. what details should I look at to trace the cause of this problem.

PL/SQL :: Merging And Updating Rows

Jun 29, 2013

I have a table structure as follows

Student(Id,First_Name, Last_Name, email, Contact, Address1,Address2,City,Edit_Date,Create_Date,Archived)

Now if there is more than one row with same email the one with the latest edit date should be updated with missing fields by using same field value other rows (if the field is present in more than one row, the one with the next latest edit date is to be considered) and the archived status of all rows with same email except this master row must be set to 1.

The Create_Date must be set to the minimum of all the create_date values of rows with same email value The create table would be as follows:

CREATE TABLE student(Id NUMBER PRIMARY KEY,first_name VARCHAR2(30) NOT NULL,last_name VARCHAR2(30) NOT NULL,email VARCHAR2(30) NOT NULL,contact NUMBER,adress1 VARCHAR(30),adress2 VARCHAR(30),city VARCHAR(30),edit_date DATE,create_date DATE,archived CHAR(1))

 Sample insert statements would be: insert into student values

Updating Millions Of Rows In A Batch

Nov 9, 2011

I have a table which has plenty of rows. In production, I would estimate it to be from 30 millions to 300 millions. I need to update on column (flag) in all the rows (created before certain date).Now saying just:

UPDATE MyTable SET flag = 3 WHERE created < to_date('2010-10-08 23:59:59', 'YY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS');
COMMIT;

Does not seem like a good idea - the commit-buffer would become too big.I will write a PL/SQL script for this. The question is, whether I should:

a) Update each row separately, and commit after every 10000 rows. ( WHERE RowId = [rowId] )
b) Update 10000 rows with set of dates ( WHERE rowId > [some_row_id] AND RowId < [some_row_id_2]

In the latter example the some_row_ids would naturally be fetched. The rowIds come from sequence. So which one would be more effective?I am not too familiar with PL/SQL or Oracle for that matter.

Converting Rows Into Columns And Updating A Table?

Apr 26, 2012

I have a table A, whose table structure is in the below format.

Table A

ID DESC VALUE
123 A 454
123 B 1111
123 C 111
123 D 222
124 A 123
124 B 1
124 C 111
124 D 44

Now i need to insert the data from this table to another table B, the sturcture of which is as below

Table B

ID A B C D
1234541111111222
124123111144

How do i frame a query to fetch data from table A and insert that into table B? I don't want to use max and decode combination. as it would return only single row for an ID. I need all the id's to be displayed.

SQL & PL/SQL :: Incorporate Parallel Loading To Load Data Into Database - Oracle Locking Not Working?

Aug 3, 2011

At the moment, we were loading the file in our system serially. This is a very old and established system.We would like to incorporate parallel loading for our loaders to load data into the database.

Most of the issues would be due to multiple inserts happening due to the files being loaded in parallel. For some reasons, we cannot give regular commits untill the entire batch of items is processed in case the process needs to rollback. A file can contain different set of batch of items clubbed together for loading.

The issue here is untill the first file finishes loading and commits, the second file would just hang. In fact, mulitiple files might hang for the first file to finish. what can I do to overcome this?I tried to used "lock table t1 in SHARE ROW EXCLUSIVE mode nowait". When the leading process is doing inserts, the failing process will fail with a resource busy and acquire with NOWAIT specified. We would catch this exception and redirect that batch to an error file to be reloaded at a later date.

Updating Rows To Highest Security Level Of Missions Of Same Type

Jan 25, 2009

I am trying to update the security_level of a mission to the highest security level of missions of the same type.

Attributes of the missions table:

mission_id, code_name, mission_type_id, mission_date, security_level

The following is an intermediate output.

MISSION_ID MISSION_TYPE_ID SECURITY_LEVEL
318 3 6
329 3 2
286 5 6
521 5 3
281 6 4
396 7 3
331 8 4
14 9 4
230 9 0
486 10 2

The maximum output for each mission_type_id

MAX_LEVEL TYPE
6 3
6 5
4 6
3 7
4 8
4 9
2 10

According to this 3 records (329,521 and 230) should update.

But my code returns an error.
ERROR at line 4:
cannot update (......"SECURITY_LEVEL") to NULL

this is my code

UPDATE
AM_X_442_2 amx
SET
Amx.SECURITY_LEVEL =
(
select
max_level
[code].........

I have intended the query to make it legible but it removes all spaces.

Materialized view is created by

I am wondering how the refersh happens or how do I specify the refresh clause.REFRESH FAST option is looking for VIEW LOG on the master table but in this case its a remote view, so I cannot create any object on remote db.

Replication :: MV Views To Snapshot Data Pros And Cons

Nov 4, 2012

I have 3 reporting tables with 2.2 million records each being rebuilt nightly. The data is used online 24/7 by users and thus, snapshot tables are being built from the refreshed reporting tables. The current method to do this:

delete from snapshot table;
insert into snapshot table (select * from report table);
<repeat for other 2 tables>
commit;

This seems to me to be resource intense on the system even though the table is defined with nologging option.

Is it better to create a MV (select only with refresh complete on demand)? The query is very simple without joins so it at first seems like overkill. However, I am also seeing that dbms_mview.refresh allows for an atomic option. Thus, if 1 of the 3 MVs fails during refresh all 3 rollback, which is a nice feature.

Are there better ways to replicate a snapshot table that I've missed? Is a delete and insert strategy a bad idea?

Convert Some Existing Materialized Views (fast Refresh) To Partition Materialized Views

Jul 7, 2010

I have to convert some existing materialized views (fast refresh) to partition materialized views.

Database version is oracle 10.1.0.4. I have decided to use on prebuilt table option to do the partitioning as it minimizes the time to transfer from the master site.

1) stop replication
1) create interim tables with similar structure as the materialized views
2) transfer all data from the materialized views to the interim tables
4) script out the materialized views structure and add in on prebuilt table option in the scripts
5) drop the materialized views
6) rename the interim tables with the same name as the materialized views
7) run the scripts to create the materialized views with on prebuilt table option
8) refresh the newly created materialized views -> it should take a short time since I am using on prebuilt table option

But I am facing one major issue. That is if I drop the materialized views, the materialized view logs of the master tables are purged. When the materialized views are refreshed fast, there are some data missing. the data that are purged out when the materialized view are dropped.

Do you happen to know other ways that existing materialized views can be converted to partitioned materialized views? Do you have any workaround to prevent the materialized view logs from being purged?

SQL & PL/SQL :: Locking And Foreign Key Indexes

Sep 1, 2013

Say we have an employee(id_emp) table with a primary key on id_emp. We have also some history tables emp_stuff with columns say (id_emp, dat_event, some_stuff) with primary key id_emp, dat_event.

This means that we have a unique index on (id_emp,dat_event). We also have a foreign key id_emp that references employee(id_emp). When we update id_emp on employee, we still have a lock on emp_stuff. According to this (end of the page) :

Quote:So, in short, with releases prior to Oracle Database 11g Release 1, you will want an index on the foreign key of the child table if you do any of the following:

Update the parent table primary key
Delete from the parent table
Merge into the parent table

So is id_emp in emp_stuff considered as indexed (through the unique index of the primary key) or do we have to add an explicit index
like this CREATE INDEX emp_stuff ON emp_stuff(id_emp) to avoide child table locks?
