SQL & PL/SQL :: Host Command - Sending Mails / Database Hanging

May 30, 2011

We are using host_command to run a batch file from database.

begin
host_command('start /min E:Deepakipacklatmailmailbatch.bat') ;
end;

The batch file contains

C:WINDOWSsystem32lat.exe -install x.com y@x.com
blat C:lat.log -to z@m.com -subject 'test' -attach "file" -body 'test' -u y@x.com -pw *****

we are sending mails using blat.exe.

The procedure is working and the mail is reaching destination. But the database is hanging.

let me know what is the reason behind hanging.

Forms Host Command Cannot Copy To Network Drive

Oct 3, 2013

I am using the HOST command within Oracle Forms 10g on Windows server to copy a pdf file from the application server to a network folder on another Windows server.

The command works fine if I logon to Windows app server and type it. But it doesn't work when it is launched within Oracle forms using HOST. The command looks as follow

net use \\FileServer\e-file /user:usergroup\username password & copy D:\RepTmp\myReport.pdf \\FileServer\e-file\test\myReport.pdf

Oracle forms doesn't give any error message at all but the pdf file never gets there. Even when I map the network folder as "R:" drive on the Windows app server, a simple copy command like this does not work with HOST:

copy D:\RepTmp\myReport.pdf r:\test\myReport.pdf

Oracle Forms server is running as "SYSTEM" on the Windows server. If HOST won't work, is there any other way to copy the file other than using fpt?

Duplicate Database To Another Host

Mar 10, 2013

I will be duplicating my production database back to a few weeks ago on my test server, to retrieve certain data. I am running 11g standard edition, not using a recovery catalog.

Below are the basic steps I plan to take in a nutshell.

1. Copy the backup files to the test system

2. In the rman run block (on the test server)
A. Set newname for each of the datafiles and tempfiles (don't have many files)
B. Duplicate command to point in time, specifying backup location and no filename check.

3. Export the data

Move Database To New Host With More RAM / CPU

Apr 10, 2013

We plan to move the database to a new host with much more RAM, CPU. The new database server will have exactly the same OS version, Kernel version and the same version of database / grid standalone (ASM). I will have to install OS, Database software, Grid Standalone on the new server.

The current version of the database is 11.2.0.3.0 Enterprise Edition and the OS version is Oracle Enterprise Linux 6.3. However, we plan to use the same disks (ASM disks). I believe I don't need to use RMAN to do the migration, Is it correct?

Performance Tuning :: One Job Is Hanging After SGA Increase?

Mar 11, 2013

Additional Information

Step 1: Increased Physical Memory on one Node from 32 G to 48 G.
Step 1 Impact : DB was running same as before
Step 2 : Increased SGA from 12 G to 15 G.
Step2 Impact : DB was running same as before for 1 day next day one reporting job was hanging.
Step 3 : Increased DB_CACHE_SIZE from 5G to 7G.
Step 3 Impact : Over all CPU Utilization was high and no effect on reporting job.
Step 4 : Decreased DB_CACHE_SIZE from 7 G to 5 G.
Step 4 Impact : CPU Utilization came down little bit but no effect on reporting job.

Now our main concern is why CPU Utilization is going high. Because same thing we did last time and we got positive results.

Performance Tuning :: Query Hanging With Sequential Read Or Latch Free Waits?

Apr 7, 2011

Following query is hanging either with 'Sequential access read' or 'Latch Free' wait event Important thing is the table which is self joined in subquery here does not have any index at all While it was hanged I tried to get trace of it and terminated twice. As such haven't got 'row source generataion' The table has only 120000 records and it shall update 34000 records

UPDATE invoice_header inv
SET inv.modified_due_date =
(SELECT inv1.btn_due_date
FROM invoice_header inv1
WHERE inv.dct_code = inv1.dct_code AND inv1.release = 'A5')

[code]...

During 'sequential read' using p1,p2 values tried to get what the session is reading and found that it is using the table itself.

During lath free I found following
SELECT name, 'Child '||child#, gets, misses, sleeps
FROM v$latch_children
WHERE addr= (select p1raw from v$session_wait where sid=18)
UNION

[code]...

However instead of self join when I creaed global temporary table as

create global temporary table t as select * from invoice_header where release='A5'

And used it in the update as

UPDATE invoice_header inv
SET inv.modified_due_date =
(SELECT t.btn_due_date
FROM t
WHERE inv.dct_code = t.dct_code AND t.release = 'A5')
WHERE inv.release = 'A5' AND inv.btn_due_date >= TRUNC (SYSDATE)

It updated the records in a second!!

Questions are
1) why it is producing 'sequential read' wait event when there is no index access or else why it is doing single block access when FTS is required?
2) Why is the 'latch free' wait event here and what it indicates here with 'cache buffer handles'?
Is it because we are reading and updating the same segment?

know in case DDL of table is required. It has all nullable columns and no index at all. Since it is 9i I am unable to use MERGE effectively in this case

Sending / Converting From CLOB

Jun 15, 2012

We are able to insert CLOB into database, Using oracle Text I'm able to search inside clob. [two questions solved ]. The question arise when we need to send this data to application either as file or as text(varchar2).

I'm able to generate file from CLOB using function, unfortunately it resides inside db and developer is not able to access it.

1)There is option to mount application partition inside db and export file over there but it is not viable option according to management.

2)I've Googled the solution to create JAVA API. Which will perform OS command like scp to send file from db to app(or any remote host). For security reason this option is also dropped.

3)I tried dbms_lob.substr but actual text inside clob is too long. File generated from CLOB sized around 5 MB.

So I guess it requires lot of effort if I wanted to convert into varchar2 as out parameter inside function.

So, to give CLOB data to developer as file or as varchar2. I'm not able to get any solution. Is there any other option using database to convert to string/varchar2 from CLOB ? Or do I need to drill down more into third option.

I'm having oracle 10.2.0.5.
