I have two different date in my payroll software,
1-Shift_date shift date *used to contain shift timings
2-Attendace_datedate *used to contain employee IN timings
As you all know that shift is a setup form, where user input data once in the starting of software so the shift_date can be "01/jan/2011 16:00 pm" but attendance loads daily and attendance field data can be in this form "24/mar/2011 16:15 pm"..Now I want to calculate difference time between these two fields therefore I used this statement
SQL> Select to_char(attendance_date,'HH24:MI') to_char(shift_date,'HH24:MI') from dual;
but it is showing error: ORA-01722: invalid number...I used hours/minutes format mask in my query because you can see there is a difference of dates between these fields and it will be increase in the coming future and I need late hours and minutes.

setting up the query/correcting the syntax below so that it calculates the 'number of days difference' between whatever the 'Biggest Date' field value is and whatever the 'current date' is using the 'sysdate'. So far, I've only managed to get the query to calculate the number of days difference (days past due) between the 'need date' and 'estimated delivery date'.
CODESELECT
To_Date(need_date, 'YYYYMMDD') Need_Dt,
To_Date(Case when estimated_delivery > ' ' THEN estimated_delivery ELSE need_date END, 'YYYYMMDD') Biggest_Date,
To_Date(need_date, 'YYYYMMDD') - To_Date(Case when estimated_delivery > ' ' THEN estimated_delivery ELSE need_date END, 'YYYYMMDD') Date_Diff
FROM tableT
WHERE
need_date <= (Case when estimated_delivery > ' ' THEN estimated_delivery ELSE need_date END)
ORDER BY Date_Diff ASC

We have a table which contains the outage data as below,
TAG CI_NAME OUTAGE_START OUTAGE_END
IM10366 FD0004 06-jul-2010 10:00:00 10-jul-2010 10:00:00
so from the above record, the outage is from 6th - 10th July. So for the given TAG & CI_NAME, we have to calculate the outage for day. So the above record should be split as below
TAG CI_NAME O_START O_END TA_PERIOD OUT_HRS
IM10366 FD0004 06-jul-2010 10-jul-2010 06-jul-2010 14HRS

IM10366 FD0004 06-jul-2010 10-jul-2010 08-jul-2010 24HRS
IM10366 FD0004 06-jul-2010 10-jul-2010 09-jul-2010 24HRS

I've got the following table:
ID.................Date...........................number...period.....termination
434473......2012-04-18 00:00:00.000...............6.......month(s)...end of month
443080......2012-02-26 00:00:00.000...............36......month(s).....end of quarter
Now it's getting complicated. Date is the start date of a contract.
I need to calculate a date when the contract can be terminated and must compare it with the current date. Lets take the first row. In column "termination" is the termination date. A contract can be terminated at "end of month" (I need to check the last day of a month. In order to get the real termination date we need to subtract the column "number".
example 30.01.2012 - 7 month = 30.06. 2011
The thing I can do it, but my logic works only if the date is in the same year. I've been thinking a lot...sql is not important first....Have you got a theoretical solution?

I need to convert the type of GMT to Local time, during data entry. I have a source table and a target table.
To make the insert get the most value, I have no problems:
insert into destination (SELECT * FROM WHERE source pointnumber = (SELECT MAX (pointnumber) FROM source));
But since times are different between the tables, I want to convert the data obtained to GMT -4:30 Time (Caracas - Venezuela), before inserting it.
I can use a function?

I am having problems with the XMLTable function. I cant get it to see the entire date/time value in a date field. This wont work
select x1.* from XMLTABLE('/DOCUMENT' passing xmltype('<DOCUMENT><STR>abc def ghi</STR><NUM>1234</NUM><DT>2013-02-17T04:24:02</DT></DOCUMENT>') columns STR varchar2(25), NUM number, DT date) x1;
However if I change the DT tag to just the date only "2013-02-17" it works. Why wont Oracle see the entire date/time format even if its ISO 8601 compliant?

I need to query a table to get the time difference based on different dates.
SAMPLE DATA:
JOB ID start_time end_time
1 201008190056 19/08/2010 01:23:12
2 201008190123 19/08/2010 01:50:12
2 201008200045 19/08/2010 01:50:12
3 201008070345 7/08/2010 04:50:12
3 201008070345 7/08/2010 04:50:12
1 201008070003 7/08/2010 00:30:12
in the above, for job 1 ,on 19/08/2010 the time difference should be calculated as
01:23:12-00:56:00 and the difference should be in minutes.
for end_time. i can't take the substring as the length of the date varies for 19 and 7. In case of start date, the time has to be in format, hh:mm:ss, to calculate the difference.
