RMAN :: So Many Backup-pieces After Adding New File System

Jun 10, 2012

I faced one strange behaviour of rman backup after adding new file system for datafiles . I have OMF datafiles . 4 days ago i had only one file system /data01 and my DB_CREATE_FILE_DEST is set to /data01. my rman backup was creating 14 to 15 bacup pieces with parallelism 5 . which is normal with 84 datafiles .Now i added one more file system /data02 . but after adding this file system rman backup is creating so many backup-pieces around (40-45) with same rman configuration . nothing changes at rman script .

Cataloging Deleted RMAN Backup Pieces?

Oct 7, 2010

A full, online backup (database, archived redo logs, and control file autobackup) is done with rman ("nocatalog", Oracle 9i on AIX 5.2) daily. A media manger is not in use, so the backup is written to disk, then written to tape using an operating system utility. There is room on disk for two full backups, so "redundancy = 1" and obsolete backup sets are deleted to free up space immediately before running the next backup. If the backup(s) on disk are lost and the tapes containing these backups are lost, will it be possible to restore a tape containing older "deleted" backups (using an operating system utility) and catalog each backup piece in the current control file? In other words, can backups considered "deleted" in the control file be reintroduced if they're available on tape?

It works for the rman backup of the control file. but no change to get this running proper for the datafiles.

Jan 24, 2011

I have 2 seperate rman backup one backup is of only datafile ,spfile and controlfile which i am able to restore and recover without any problem say bkp1 taken at 10 am

other set of backup is of only archive log files of same day but later time than datafile backup say bkp2 taken at 8pm...if i restore and recover bkp1 and try to restore bkp2 it gives error datafile exist (possibly due to fact both backup have control file)

if i just restore bkp1 and try to restore bkp2 so that i can do one recover at time
it gives error datafile permission issue (possibly due to fact both backup have control file)

I want to restore database upto 8pm time how can i use both bkp1 and bkp2 to do it(restore datafiles and apply all archive logs on it)

Steps For Adding Entry To Orapwd File

review/correct my steps for adding an entry to the orapwd file.Is there an environment variable I need to set to tell it the name of the password file. In addition, how do I get a "user" in the password file when orapwd accepts file, password and entries as paramaters. Does this mean I need to give user "sys" sysdba privs?

ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01994: GRANT failed: password file missing or disabled

Backup & Recovery :: RMAN Duplicate Set Until Time Using Wrong Backup Piece Name To Restore?

Feb 26, 2012

We are doing RMAN Duplicate set until time to refresh daily our test database for our developers and it taking long time to finish. We noticed on the restore log that RMAN was using a day old old backup pieces to refresh the test database and don't immediately use the latest backup pieces instead.

For additional details here's the rman duplicate command we are using which we run daily(mon-sat) at 4am once daily full backup on production completed.

RMAN Duplicate commands:
run
{
set until time "to_date(to_char(sysdate,'Mon DD YYYY') || ' 04:00:00', 'Mon DD YYYY HH24:MI:SS')";
allocate auxiliary channel ch1 type disk;
duplicate target database to testdb;
}
exit

Is there a way on how to let RMAN use the latest backup pieces instead?
