I came across situation where a Nullable column is not using index for 'order by' clause. I added Not Null condition in the 'where' condition but it wasn't useful. I don't wanted to make composite index with not nullable column or with constant or modify column to 'Not Null'
So I carried out test cases and during which I found that in one case the sql statement does 'fast full scan' for data access but does not use index for 'order by' sorting
here are the steps
Initially I kept the column Nullable

1) Why adding 'where id is not null wasn't enough for the index to get used in 'order by'?
2) While we got 'fast full scan' why index wasn't used for 'order by' clause?
3) Do we need the indexed column in where clause for being used in 'order by clause' too?
4) Do we need 'order by' clause if we are selecting only the indexed column with sequence generated values?

I am trying to find some way how to tune and optimize the server performance in following situation. There are 100s of sessions inserting records to one table. Sessions are communication threads in java application, each thread is receiving messages that are to be stored in the table. Each message must be commited and then is ACK sent to remove client. Two problems are raising of course - much of ITLs on the table and lots of very small transactions. I can adjust the java application, but cant do much about the design.
I was thinking about some "caching" - if the messages are stored in memory and bulk-inserted to database by single thread the performance would be much higher. However, there would be possible loss of data - the message could be lost from memory cache and client already received ACK.

Customer is sending data from legacy system (Source) with the web service which in turn calls a package lying on Oracle server (Target). Now this package is simply inserting data passed by legacy system into master staging table in Oracle database. When they started this process in Sept 2011 then 4 lack records were inserted into staging table. In Oct 11 it was 0 records Nov 11 it was 2 lack records, Dec 11 it was 1 lack records, in Jan 12 it was 1 lac records, Feb 12 73k records, Mar 12 0 records, Apr 12 52k records.
As we see that number of records inserted in the table got reduced with time.. what should be the starting point here since web service is calling that package on the fly, how can i enable trace for that package? I cannot replicate this is Dev as this process is only working in PROD.

Which step in the following plan is the first step of execution
I reckon it is "TABLE ACCESS BY INDEX ROWID| BANK_BATCH_STATE"
Is that correct?
In the "Predicate Information (identified by operation id):"
section the predicates - access and filter for the step "TABLE ACCESS FULL | PYMNT_DUES" are displayed first
Isn't there any relation between the order of execution steps and the order in which predicates are displayed?

One of our clients is using Rule Based Optimizer on Oracle 10.2.0.3.0
2-3 weeks backs, during performance issue in one of the sql queries, one of our team members executed tuning adviser for it, created SQL profile and the subsequent execution of the SQL did not took much time (less I/O). Now it took hardly a minute to execute
When this happened I checked that the SQL profile forced that particular query to use CBO (say plan_hash_value is PHV1 here). Yesterday the same query again took 15-20 minutes for execution. I checked that even for this execution the query used the same SQL profile but "this time" with different plan_hash_value - say PHV2.
Today again the query executed in less than a minute and used the plan_hash_value as PHV1.

I am unable to understand how execution plan and thus plan_hash_value is changing for the same SQL Profile. I read that SQL Profile (unlike stored outline) keeps up with increasing data volume and may not keep up with changing data distribution.
I checked that values for 4 bind variables out of 81 are different for execution between today and yesterdays' run(queried v$sql_bind_capture based on last_captured)
My questions are
1) does the different plan_hash_values with different execution plans for query using same SQL profile mean the query was hard parsed multiple times and still used the same SQL profile?
2) If that is the case why I never saw child_number = 1 in any of the views for the same sql_id. I tried it repeatedly over last 2 weeks and always found child_number=0 in v$sql (also loaded_versions=1)
3) Does the different values of bind variable are causing this flip-flop of the plans? How can I conclude this?
I have 2 plans with 2 different plan_hash_values. I know which would be better. How can I force the sql to use better plan in the two in this case where I am using Rule Based Optimizer and have SQL profile created If this is not possible then how can I create stored outline from the existing plan (not waiting for subsequent execution to take place).

The following query gets input parameter from the Front End application, which User queries to get Reports.There are many drop down boxes like LOB, FAMILY, BRAND etc., The user may or may not select values from drop down boxes.
If the user select any one or more values ( against each drop down box) it has to fetch all matching values from DB. If the user does'nt select any values it has to fetch all the records, in this case application will send a value 'DEFAULT' (which is not a value in DB ) so that the DB will fetch all the records.
For getting this I wrote a query like below using DECODE, which colleague suggested that will hamper performance.From the below query all the variables V_ are defined in procedure which gets the values selected by user as a comma separated string here V_SELLOB and LOB_DESC is column in DB.

Performance issues with the below mentioned sql.After gone through execution plan we have found out the reason but we couldn't able to change the execution plan the way we want.
If we could able to join
HRMGR.HR_EXPANDED_BOOK table with MISBOMGR.ibm_client_mgr7_empid, MISBOMGR.ibm_client_mgr6_empid at earlier stage means before HRMGR.HR_EMP_STATUS_LOOKUP then my issue will be solved but somehow optimizer is not considering that path. Even i have added push_subq hint which will push sub queries to execute at earlier stage but no use. Why push_subq hint is not working in this scenario and what can be the other alternative to change the driving path.

avoid duplication of **where** clause in my query.

high number of executions of specific types of queries which is using only rownum clause. For exam.

I know the only way to guarantee a specific sort order result when querying table is by using the order by clause. However, I have an issue where I do not have access to the code for the web user interface of a very lightly used interface (has two users). In that user interface is a drop down box that is populated by a table - one table. The drop down box is populated by the query "select [column name] from [table name]". Right now there are 400+ rows in that table total, so it's small but not having the items ordered is a pain.
I would like to alter something on the db side so the result of "select [column name] from [table name]" is an ordering by the column descending. I don't want the sort order to be the same for all queries (including joins and all) just want to control the order for that one query. It is Oracle9i.

I am running a fairly busy Oracle 10gR2 DB, one of the tables has about 120 columns and this table receives on average 1500 insertions per second. The table is partitioned and the partitioning is based on the most important of the two timestamp columns. There are two timestamps, they hold different times.
Out of these 120 columns, about 15 need to be indexed. Out of the 15 two of them are timestamp, at least one of these two timestamp columns is always in the where clause the queries.
Now the challenge is, the queries we run can have any combination of the 13 other columns + one timestamp. In reality the queries never have more than 7 or 8 columns in the where clause but even if we had only 4 columns in the where clause we would still have the same problem.
So if I create one concatenated index for all these columns it will not be very efficient because after the 4th or 5th column the sorting would no longer be very useful and I believe the optimiser would simply not use the rest of the index. So queries that use the leading columns of the index in sequence work well, but if I need to query the 10th column the I have performance issues.
Now, if I create multiple single column indexes oracle will have to work a lot harder to maintain all these indexes and it will create performance issues (I have tried that). Besides, if I have multiple single column indexes the optimiser will do nested loops twice or three times and will hit only the first few columns of the where clause so I think it will kind of be the same as the long concatenated index.
What I am trying to do is exactly what the Bitmap index would do, it would be very good if I could use the AND condition that a Bitmap index uses. This way I could have N number of single column indexes which the optimiser could pick from and serve the query with exactly the ones it needs. But unfortunately using the Bitmap index here is not an option given the large amount of inserts that I get on this table.
I have been looking for alternatives, I have considered creating multiple shorter concatenated indexes but this still would not address the issue since many queries would still not be served properly and therefore would take a very long time to complete.
What I had in mind would be some sort of multidimensional index, I am not even sure if such thing exists. But essentially it would be some sort of index that could serve a query efficiently regardless of the fact that the where clause has the 1st, 3rd and last columns of the index.
So considering how widely used Oracle is and how many super large databases there are out there, this problem must be common.

i have a table test on 4 different-different database, at the starting structure is same in all the database. and now i want to change the datatype of the primary key column named "testid" , then i add a temp column in test table (and it is added at the last in table).
i have copied the data of testid in temp column and renamed it as testid and i dropped the testid column , then the problem is that primary key column will comes at last and i want to make it like previous position so that there will not be any difference in all 4 database as in structure.
is it possible to changing column order as our desire without dropping the table?and i made all the script to changing the datatype of primary key column.

i have a table named employees in which there are 2 columns dep_id and name. One record having name as annie has dep_id=null .
When i arrange the records of the table in ascending order using order by dep_id the record with name annie and dep_id is placed in the last because null is consired largest. How can I bring that record to the top without changing the ascending order of the dep_id.

I have requirement to create an XML structure through stored procedure. I need to Order some of the columns in ascending order before I format them into the xml structure. I am pretty novice to creating an output into XML format, but attached is the query I came up with (without order by). This works perfect, but now the requirement is to order by - cls_cd, and within cls_cd, again order by - cat_cd. I am not able to do this.

I have a requirement where I need to display a list of employees, performance rating and manager id. I want to display the employees first whose manager is as manager_id as input parameter. So lets say a manager logs in, he should see his reporters first and then the rest. How can I implement this in SQL? I am trying first clause with order by but not sure how to do that here.

I know that order by clause in normal query is used to order the result set based on the key. significance of order by clause in analytical functions.

I have got the following error while executing below Query.
ORA-01791 'Not a SELECTed expression'
select distinct sgbstdn_levl_code
from sgbstdn,spriden
where spriden_pidm = sgbstdn_pidm
and spriden_id = '200076543'
order by sgbstdn_term_code_eff desc;
The above Query is not working with Distinct & Order By clause are present and by joining two tables. I need the distinct values of levels in Descending order of Terms.
