Performance Tuning :: Tune Data Coming From Legacy System Into Oracle Database
May 22, 2012
Customer is sending data from legacy system (Source) with the web service which in turn calls a package lying on Oracle server (Target). Now this package is simply inserting data passed by legacy system into master staging table in Oracle database. When they started this process in Sept 2011 then 4 lack records were inserted into staging table. In Oct 11 it was 0 records Nov 11 it was 2 lack records, Dec 11 it was 1 lack records, in Jan 12 it was 1 lac records, Feb 12 73k records, Mar 12 0 records, Apr 12 52k records.
As we see that number of records inserted in the table got reduced with time.. what should be the starting point here since web service is calling that package on the fly, how can i enable trace for that package? I cannot replicate this is Dev as this process is only working in PROD.

I am trying to find some way how to tune and optimize the server performance in following situation. There are 100s of sessions inserting records to one table. Sessions are communication threads in java application, each thread is receiving messages that are to be stored in the table. Each message must be commited and then is ACK sent to remove client. Two problems are raising of course - much of ITLs on the table and lots of very small transactions. I can adjust the java application, but cant do much about the design.
I was thinking about some "caching" - if the messages are stored in memory and bulk-inserted to database by single thread the performance would be much higher. However, there would be possible loss of data - the message could be lost from memory cache and client already received ACK.

We know and perform lots of tuning stuff on our databases, mainly on primary side.
but the set of queries running on standby databases (like to use for reporting purpose) are totally different from one running at primary.
so How can we tune out our Standby DB to perform well ?

A website requires to display consolidated data from databases located in different geographical regions (India, London and New York). The application server for the website is hosted only in one location India. What are the techniques that can be used for faster retrieval of data from all 3 databases?
Note: There is no need of real time data retrieval from different regions; however the user should able to view the updated data at predefined intervals.

We have a data migration scripts written for oracle. Data is not huge but we are observing that the migration is faster in the development labs but is 5x slower in the production site.
The development Oracle setup is on Windows and Production setup on Solaris. I have attached the AWR generated for a period where migration was run for 3 hours and stopped due to slow performance.
Here is my initial analysis.
1) The first timed events is the DB CPU. Hence I feel the migration scripts can be modified to run in parallel so that they can finish faster. However here the question arises why it should run faster in development env if this is an issue.
2) I tried increasing the
a.large_pool_size set to 512M
b.sga_max_size set to 8G
c.sga_target set to 8G
from 0, 4G and 4G respectively.
I have attached the AWR and below are the etc/system contents for solaris settings.
* Begin MDD root info (do not edit)
rootdev:/pseudo/md@0:0,1,blk
* End MDD root info (do not edit)
set noexec_user_stack=1
set noexec_user_stack_log=1
* IBMdpo vpath_START (do not remove)
* default SCSI timeout is 60 seconds
* uncomment to change SCSI timeout * set sd:sd_io_time=0x1e
forceload: drv/vpathdd
* IBMdpo vpath_END (do not remove)
set noexec_user_stack=1
set semsys:seminfo_semmni=100
set semsys:seminfo_semmns=1024
set semsys:seminfo_semmsl=256
set semsys:seminfo_semvmx=32767
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=4294967295
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmin=1
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmni=100
set shmsys:shminfo_shmseg=10
P.S. The awr report is renamed to .txt from .html to be able to upload the file.

From paymemo
where referencepkey = (select pkey from paymain where ID = 'DED-520074 505354DN6 2012-02-04 00:06:48');
This is not working because of type conversion issues.

I have a question regarding memory parameters in oracle database 9.2.0.8, especially sga_max_size and db_cache_size. Database server has 32G of ram. Oracle parameter on server shmmax is set to 16G. Is reasonable to set sga_max_size to the same value, and db_cache_size to 80% of that size?

I am querying v$sga and getting variable size : 211337216 bytes.when querying v$sgastat then getting
java Pool : 16777216
Large Pool : 41943040
Shared pool : 398560392
But as per my knowledge following condition should satisfy, but not getting
Variable sga = java pool + large pool + shared pool
select pool,name,sum(bytes)
from v$sgastat
where pool in ('shared pool','java pool','large pool')
group by pool,name;
Here variable size using v$sga : 211337216 bytes
and java pool + large pool + shared pool : 211302536 bytes.
but it should match?

I have a procedure which mainly run queries on a Table which has nearly 9.5 million recodes. This procedures takes nearly 15 min to complete execution on our main database. I exported and imported the schema to our backup database and the same procedure just took 3 seconds to complete.
I tried to analyze the table in our main database and tried to execute the procedure again but did not show any improvements. ANALYZE TABLE DN_ACTIONS COMPUTE STATISTICS;
I am not sure computing the statistics for all the tables in the schema will work. I also checked there is enough disk space where oracle data files are stored. I am also turning on the sql trace to see what sql statements in the procedure is taking longer time.

Looking to understand the difference between instance tuning and database tuning.
What is the difference between these two tuning exercises? I understand that an instance is memory based structures (logical) where as database consists of physical structures.
However, how does one tune a database the physical structure? Does it have to do with file placements/block sizes etc. Would you agree that a lot of that is taken care by ASM now in 11g? What tools are required/available (third party as well as oracle supplied) for these types of tuning scenarios?

It's been a while since I worked with SQL Plus . I am using Oracle 11g. We are working on a legacy data migration project. I have a table of records with circular dependency records. i am trying to identify the records. I have the foll. columns- Product,Source, target. I want o identify the records which form a loop. For e.g.
Source Target
A B
B C
C D
D A
Last record forms a loop-I need to identify these records. My query is below-
SELECT DISTINCT SOURCE,TARGET FROM RULESELIB WHERE CONNECT_BY_ISCYCLE=1 CONNECT BY NOCYCLE SOURCE=PRIOR TARGET;
I ran this query on 2 tables- one with 75000 records and the other with 25000 records. It works fine on the table with 75000 records completes within a minute but it does not complete on the other table. I can't seem to be able to figure out the issue with the query or is there something about the data that is causing this query to loop infinitely?

There is a simple way to increase the performance of a query by reducing the row-size of the table it hits. I used it in the past by dividing the table into smaller parts and querying respective smaller table in each query.
what is this method called ? just forgot the method and can't recall it. what this type of row-reduction optimization is called ?

Testing our 9i to 11g upgrade, we've imported the entire DB into the new machine. We've found that certain procedures are really suffering performance problems. BUT, we've also found, that if we check out a production copy of the procedure from our source code control, and reinstall it, the performance issue goes away. Just alter the procedure and recompiling does NOT work.
The new machine where the 11g database exists is slightly different than the source, but it's not like we have this problem with every procedure. It's only a couple.
any possible reason that we'd have to re-install a procedure to correct a performance problem?

I would like to export the sql plan from test database to prod database.
how to export/import in 10.2.0.4 version for a particular sql statement's execution plan.

DB Used : Oracle 10g.
A table X : NUM, INST are column names
NUM ----- INST
1234 ----- 23,22,21,78
2235 ----- 20,7,2,1
1298 ----- 23,22,21,65,98
9087 ----- 20,7,2,1
-- Based upon requirement :
1) Split values from "INST" Column : suppose 23
2) Find all values from "NUM" column for above splitted value i.e 23 ,
Eg:
For Inst : 23 ,
It's corresponding "NUM" values are : 1234,1298
3) Save these values into
A table Y : INST, NUM are column names.
INST NUM
23 1234,1298
1) I have a thousand records in Table X , and for all of those records i need to split and save data into Table Y.Hence, I need to do this task with best possible performance.
2) After this whenever a new data comes in Table X, above 'split & save' operation should automatically be called and append corresponding data wherever possible..

insight into the overheads for mutally authenticated SSL for database connections? This is over a fast local network, to a RAC cluster, with DB firewall in front. There's always a large element of "it depends"
Information I'm interested in are things like latency for initial session setup and subsequent data transfer. Also the increase in network packet size, and the increase in CPU cost for the database server. I guess there is some implications for session memory usage as well.

I have one big database which I need to migrate to Oracle, because it rocks with big databases, instead of other databases and when I was made transfer software and all works great except one more think. During this process I found that Oracle normally fill log & undo table, and my question is how to migrate (or can I migrate) database to oracle without filling undo database (deactivate this process) and after that to put database to work normally, because I just need to transfer data as is and from that point Oracle goes on...

i am using 11.2.0.3 version of oracle. We have recently migrated to 11g, after 1 month of smooth and comparatively better performance, we are suddenly facing performance issues with our database and it got crashed twice within 5 days. even we didnt push any new code to our database in recent past, atleast after the 11G migration. And after getting feedback from the ORACLE corporation guys , they pointed out about the default database stats gathering job, which was eating most of the CPU, because of the default degree mentioned So it was running in 160 parallel threads causing resource starvation.so we reduce the degree of the stats gathering job to 8 .
But the database crashed again two days back, and rebooted within 3 mins to back to normal, even after this default degree changed to 8. This is happening due to any specific application related sql or anything else.

We have few tables in our production database which are havoc in size and will increase in size in future too so as part of the corrective measures , we have jotted down the below 3 methods to manage the size of those tables :-
1> Partitioning the table and take the export of identified partitions and after that, truncate those partition.
2> Creating history tables and remove not so current data from the original table to history table.
