Initial And Next Extents
Nov 2, 2010settings I can make for Initial and Next extents? I am working at a client site where they have an in-house E-Business Suite database that is running very fast. In most cases the initial extent on the big tables is set to something like 64Mb with the next extent set to figures varying between 25Mb and 50Mb. What this means is that we don't have many extents.
They have recently outsourced their database to Oracle on Demand and are getting poor performance. Over at OOD the initial extents remain as set in the local database - taken from a clone. However, all of the next extents are set small to nimbers like 128Kb. Some of the big Oracle EBS tables have more than 128Kb in a single record and we are seeing many 1000s of extents already.
Could the large number of extents and the small size of the next extent be the cause of a substantial decrese in performance? I'm looking for some justification to go back to OOD with a view to asking them to reinstate the settings as they were in the client database before it was migrated.

As the extent management is local, does it mean that any storage clause of the objects (tables, indexes etc.) placed in it isn't taken into consideration? I mean in a case of placing a table in the mentioned tablespace that has a storege parameters defined as follows:

4. when i'm sure the tablespace is dedicated to keep only one object [MY_TABLE], what should be the relation between the initial datafile size [filename1.dbf] and the initial extent size? Should they be iqual or doesn't matter?
5. as the SEGMENT SPACE MANAGEMENT is AUTO, the PCTFREE param doesn't make sense, right?

Mar 6, 2008I'm trying to work out how to synchronize a source and target database in an Oracle CDC implementation. We're in the architecture design stage of a near-real-time Operational Data Store style solution. Both the ODS and our pilot source system will be Oracle 10g. Our plan is to use Oracle Asynch Hotlog Change Data Capture to capture change data in near-real-time so that it can be applied to the ODS.
I understand the CDC apply process once the ODS and Source System are synchronized: DBMS_CDC_SUBSCRIBE.EXTEND_WINDOW to release the next window of change data, select from the publish views, then DBMS_CDC_SUBSCRIBE.PURGE_WINDOW to register the change data is no longer required.
But how do we do the initial synchronization if the source system is live and contains data and the ODS is new (and empty)? The easiest way would be to somehow flag EVERY row as change data. eg. Truncate every table and import. This would not be so good for existing CDC subscribers.
A more logical way would be to:
- Take a hot backup of the live prod database
- Activate CDC (DBMS_CDC_SUBSCRIBE.ACTIVATE_SUBSCRIPTION) on the source system to start tracking changes
- Manually build the ODS from the snapshot
- Start applying changes from CDC
if the source system is live, how can we GUARANTEE that the first 2 steps (snapshot and ACTIVATE_SUBSCRIPTION) are performed at EXACTLY the same time (ie. same SCN)?

Performance Tuning :: Initial Extent For Table?
Mar 19, 20121.2 million chained rows, 1.7 million blocks, etc. Initial extent for this table is 64k and next 1 mb. I would try to calculate this out better for efficiency and performance. This will not be efficient as it stands. calculate the size.

So Notes database field is updated on Save / Apply changes button being pressed.But would really like any text added / appended to the Notes field to be prefixed by userid and date / timestamp.
Is it possible via dynamic actions or Javascript to have any new text added / typed to be auto prefixed as per above.
Would only want the first key press in the filed to trigger the auto-prefix and if added text was deleted then the auto prefix to be deleted as well ?? If user doesn't press Save / Apply changes obviously want to leave existing Notes as is.
Text :: Index Memory Parameter For Oracle Text Indexes
Sep 17, 2013I am on Oracle 11.2.0.3 on Linux and have implemented Oracle Text.I created Oracle Text indexes with default setting. However in an oracle white paper I read that the default setting may not be right. Here is the excerpt from the white paper by Roger Ford:URL....(Part of this white paper below....)Index Memory.
As mentioned above, cached $I entries are flushed to disk each time the indexing memory is exhausted. The default index memory at installation is a mere 12MB, which is very low. Users can specify up to 50MB at index creation time, but this is still pretty low. This would be done by a CREATE INDEX statement something like: CREATE INDEX myindex ON mytable(mycol) INDEXTYPE IS ctxsys.context PARAMETERS ('index memory 50M'); Allow index memory settings above 50MB, the CTXSYS user must first increase the value of the MAX_INDEX_MEMORY parameter, like this: begin ctx_ adm. set_ parameter('max_index_memory', '500M'); end; The setting for index memory should never be so high as to cause paging, as this will have a serious effect on indexing speed. On smaller dedicated systems, it is sometimes advantageous to temporarily decrease the amount of memory consumed by the Oracle SGA (for example by decreasing DB_CACHE_SIZE and/or SHARED_POOL_SIZE) during the index creation process.
Once the index has been created, the SGA size can be increased again to improve query performance." (End here from the white paper excerpt)My question is:
1) To apply this procedure (ctx_adm.set_parameter) required me to login as CTXSYS user. Is that right? or can it be avoided and be done from the application schema? This user CTXSYS is locked by default and I had to unlock it. Is that ok to do in production?
2) What is the value that I should use for the max_index_memory should it be 500 mb - my SGA is 2 GB in Dev/ QA and 3GB in production. Also in the index creation what is the value I should set for index memory parameter - I had left that at default but how should I change now? Should it be 50MB as shown in example above?
3) The white paper also refer to rebuilding an index at some interval like once in a month: ALTER INDEX DR$index_name$X REBUILD ONLINE; We are on Oracle 11g and the white paper was written in 2003.

Should I use user mod to update the Oracle user account to install as initial group or just leave it alone? If I now do “usermod –g oinstall –G dba,oper,asmadmin oracle”, will it break anything, any impact to the database?
