What are the differences of;
1. ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE;
2. ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG ALL;
3. ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT;
I read Oracle's document but still didn't understand the difference in real life-use.
If you were writing a hotbackup script, which would you use at the end of datafile copy?
What is the difference between the following . In my schema all are giving the same results with some different format

Developer is importing some large volumes of data. As the filesystem was filling up fast, I removed the all the archive log files. Will this affect the functioning of database? It is a development environment.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an attribute in my DB called start_date of type date.I want a query that return the difference between the start_date and the current date.for example if start_date = 2/14/2013 *2*:35:00 PM and the current date = 2/14/2013 *1*:35:00 PM the query returns 1.
I want the result in hours.
We want to find out difference of data for some tables between current day & previous day. We can use query with minus operation but it will take lot of time since table size is in range from 200 to 500 GB. We have to do this exercise every day.

But if I check status one logfile with statement:
select status from v$logfile wheremember='/u01/app/oracle/redologs/activeredolog/DB1/redo0102.log';
Status is still null. I think status should be change.
My database is 11.2.0.1 with single instance.
Status is changed after restart instance.
Haw can I monitor status logfiles without restart instance?
I need to verify if the current date is grater than the 15th of the current month. If its grater than the 15th of the current month i need to do an action or if else its lesser than 15th of the current month i need to do an other operation.

1): In logminer logfile analyzing, I had added all the online redo log files in the below procedure:
EXECUTE dbms_logmnr.add_logfile(.....
Options => dbms_logmnr.addfile).
Then
2):I mentioned 3 days at the STARTTIME & ENDTIME in the procedure of LOGMNR.START_LOGMNR(...)
But it shows the below error msg:Ora-01291: missing logfile.
I see following warning message in alert log file.

I am on H1 visa and working as chemical engineer...but I am bored of this job... I wanted to switch to IT and particularly oracle dba..
How much is the risk for me as I am coming from non computer science background..there are various IT consulting companies who can provide training and do h1 transfer......currently (year 2010) the market for oracle is booming a lot...so I was thinking what can go wrong if I do this switch.
I recently started working with legacy code and noticed that some huge tables (5 years worth of data, don't have more details on me right now but can post later if needed) are partitioned based on time sequence number column while majority of queries are done based on time (different column). Queries performance is degrading and I'd like to try to modify partitioning and run some tests to evaluate performance improvement.
My only concern is with so much live data I have to come up with solution on how to switch partitioning with the least impact on applications running 24 x 7. Something you have done in the same situation and it worked?
i am seeing (LGWR switch) happening in my databsae alert log every 3-4 minutes. is that appropriate? if not, what measure can i take to reduce this?

There is a disk group named +FRA which has only 1 disk (call it disk 0 for later references).
+FRA disk group is in type of EXTERNAL redundancy
I'd like to add another disk to +FRA disk group and copy all files stored in disk 0 to the new disk (call it disk 1 for ex.), then take off disk 0 (not use for +FRA disk group any more).
Expected result: there is only one disk 1 left in the +FRA disk group, with all the data from disk 0 and keep their original file names
I have seen in many RMAN backup scripts that a manual log switching is performed in first line of the script? What is it purpose, just to write changes needed to reconstruct the DML/DDL statements to online redo logfiles and start the archiving process if db is running in archive log mode?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI configure exadata + 2 switch between application server and and exadata. And we have problem to connect to switch and load balancing between Ethernet switch to exadata.
We might end up that is 'How about remove ethernet switch and directly connect to exadata?' I don't know which idea comes up with Ethernet gigabit switch between application server and exadata, exadata might be gigabit.
but from application server to ethernet switch is still 100M network, it is only fast in that load, other load is still 100m , it might useless. and about load balancing, exadata is RAC cluster node, exadata is doing load balancing, why we want another load balancing feature of ethernet switch?
Is it good idea to have dual switch between application server and exadata? exadata iti is what might be pro and con of this setting? exadata is handled by oracle support team, but dual switch is only cared by application operation team, so if something wrong with switch, nobody except operation team can manage .

Now when I want to change/switch database to start using SPFILE, can I do it with out restarting (shutdown and startup)the database.
Just wanted to know if I do
ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT;
Then it archives the current redo and switches to next redo.
If again switching is done, then just wanted to know if redo is archived when its size is less than log_buffer, then is it resumed when it is switched into next time or after archiving it creates a empty redo file and then use it?
how can i monitor the instance status and log switch summary.

I have a table I need to update called employee_history. It has almost the exact same values as another table called Employee. The difference being that the employee_history has a start date and end date. So it allows you to have overrides in the future. The employee table is static. So it only allows you to see the current data as of today.
I need to write an insert statement that will pull values from employee table and populate the employee_history table but I also have columns in the employee_history table that requires a next value and a start and end date.
From the employee table I want to select e.emp_id, e.emp_firstname, e.emp_lastname, e.shftpat_id, e.client_id from employee e
I want to INSERT INTO EMPLOYEE_HISTORY (EMHIST_ID, EMPHIST_START_DATE, EMPHIST_END_DATE, EMP_ID, EMP_FIRSTNAME, EMP_LASTNAME, SHFTPAT_ID, CLIENT_ID)
with the VALUES being (SEQ_EMPHIST_ID.nextval, TRUNC(sysdate), 01/01/3000 and the employee data from the employee table)). I bought the book Easy Oracle PL/SQL Programming but I am not finding what I need. It gives an example of a CURSOR FOR UPDATE and a reference to an UPDATE WHERE CURRENT OF.
The examples are straight forward where you take two columns from table one and update a new table with those values, or where you select a subset of employees that need a commission and update the emp table with that commission.
