Backup & Recovery :: Is Non Full Redo Is Resumed After Forceful Log Switch
Aug 23, 2011
Just wanted to know if I do
ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT;
Then it archives the current redo and switches to next redo.
If again switching is done, then just wanted to know if redo is archived when its size is less than log_buffer, then is it resumed when it is switched into next time or after archiving it creates a empty redo file and then use it?
I have seen in many RMAN backup scripts that a manual log switching is performed in first line of the script? What is it purpose, just to write changes needed to reconstruct the DML/DDL statements to online redo logfiles and start the archiving process if db is running in archive log mode?
I have restored all datafile to new location (that is ASM) earlier it was on file system using set new name command (RMAN). Now when i'm trying to update control file with swicth command it is prompting error. Version is 11g R2.
RMAN> SWITCH DATAFILE ALL;

I am tryign to run a split onlike full backup from the os useign the sap command which is linked to rman..Command that i am useing is ...
brbackup -u / -c force -t online_split -m full -p initBR1_onlinefull.sap
The backup goes thru but i get this erro on the end...

after i backup my database,i check the alert log ,i found the following errror:

online backup done thru RMAN.Suppose i am taking online backup of full database. During the backup, user's are inserting/deleting/modifying data. This data is getting stored as online archives. Once the database backup is finished, how these archives are applied to the database to make the database up to date.
I am using the following query to determine if my rman backup succeeded for failed. I look for "COMPLETED WITH ERRORS"
col input_type format a10 col bck_hrs format 99.9 heading "Run|Time" col status format a21 col end_dt format a20 heading "End|Time" col mbytes_per_sec format 9,999 heading "Output|Rate|MB/sec"

I know that the DB INCR is an INCR 0 backup but is there some way query I can join with my example above to tell me this is INCR 0 or FULL BKUP?
I was thinking maybe setting "COMMAND_ID" some text like INCR 0 or INCR 1 or FULL BKUP. Does that sound feasible
I was asked by my systems administrator if I could tell him how much redo log volume, on average, do I figure we generate in a day?
Just wondering how I might calculate this?
We have several production databases. If I wanted to calculate the above for one of them, would it be take all the redo logs for a day and total up the size in bytes? Maybe take a 5 day work week and take the average over the 5 days?
In the backup and recovery session i have miss my online redolog files. why the datafiles are recovered.it's possible to recovered to online redo logs?
I have taken the RMAN Full database backup through the following command.My database is in no archivelog mode.
AT RMAN prompt Shutdown immediate; Startup mount; run { allocate channel c01 device type disk format 'd: man_bkp est_%U'; allocate channel c02 device type disk format 'd: man_bkp est_%U'; backup full database tag 'full_bkup_test_081111'; backup current controlfile; backup spfile; release channel c01; release channel c02; }
Now i have deleted my all controlfile and spfile/Pfile from the database.So how can i recover my SPfile and controlfile? i do not have autobackup on of SPfile/Controlfile.
So I try to back it up first by using the below command:
RMAN> backup archivelog all;
Starting backup at 04-JUN-13 using channel ORA_DISK_1 channel ORA_DISK_1: starting archive log backupset channel ORA_DISK_1: specifying archive log(s) in backup set [code]......
I know that I have to extend the db_recovery_file_dest directory for "limit exceed" error but how can I safely delete the archivelog in order to bring up the database?
I've got a legacy SAP system with oracle 8i on Tru64. No changes at all are made but for legal reasons we have to keep it up and running.
we currently do a full backup monthly by shutting down oracle and doing a backup of all the files to tape and that takes around 12 hours.
If I stop doing the full backup and I only backup the control file and the archived redo log files every month and I had to restore the full database years from now, would I be able to restore the database using the last full monthly backup and use the latest control file and archived redo log files?
7 of days ago Full backup has been taken to disk due to issues with tape devices.3 days ago tape devices have been fixed and we switched to CommVault managed tape backups. CommVault calls RMAN with following command:
These backups done successfully.Then archivelog backup taken similar way.But when I issue RESTORE DATABASE PREVIEW SUMMARY; RMAN starts with Full backup set, though newer Incremental Level 0 ones are available.Why it does not use these newer ones?
I configured recovery catalog and started Full online backup using EMC Networker. In EMC Networker I set three months policy to keep Backup.I didn't change redundancy.
CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1; # default
My question is, if I need to restore Backup of last 15 days then I can ?.
I am trying to practice some RMAN configuration settings.Version 11.2.0.1OS - Linux X86-64 What i wanted to validate is if there is no level 0 backup of database taken, then the level 1 backup will be automatically backing up all the blocks of the database(similar to full backup). RMAN> report schema; Report of database schema for database with db_unique_name DB101 List of Permanent Datafiles
I am not sure what these input bytes are which is not matching with the database size(posted in the beginning of thread)? why it has to show as db full when i actually run a incremental?
We are trying to restore a database on the different server using RAM incremental level 0 and 1 backups. We have weekly Incremental level 0 backups along with incremental backups on daily basis. During recovery of Incremental level 0 backup, RMAN is expecting/looking for Incremental Level 0 backup of prior week as well. Is this the usual process for RMAN to look for prior level 0 backup though we need to restore from the current level 0 backup and roll forward by a week with subsequent Level 1 backup.?
We intend to restore from the Level 0 of 1/16 and roll forward with daily incrementals till 1/22. RMAN is expecting level 0 backupsets from 1/9 backup as well and keep failing since those backups are not available. quick inputs since we are in middle of recovery and trying to resolve if this is even doable.
I have problem on using "delete obsolete" in RMAN.
First, let describe my backup configuration.
1. Full backup every Monday (17-Oct, 10-Oct, 3-Oct, 26-Sep) 2. Incremental backup for other days 3. Enable autobackup of control file 4. Backup archive log every day 5. RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 30 DAYS 6. Execute "Delete obsolete" every day 7. control file is used instead of catalog
The results observed: 1. Backup of control files older than 30 days will be deleted 2. Backup of archive log files older than 30 days will be deleted. 3. Backup of datafiles older than ~14 days but before 30 days are also DELETED.
In my example, the backup of datafiles created at 26-Sep is deleted at 16-Oct.
I tried "restore database validate until time "sysdate-22"" at 17-Oct. And RMAN reported "datafile xx will be created automatically during restore operation". It seems that RMAN failed to do restoration up to 22 days ago. The retention policy I set seems not effective on datafile backups.
I checked view v$backup_set and the "Keep" is "No" and "Keep until" is empty.
The only thing I can think of, is the settings of "CONTROL_FILE_RECORD_KEEP_TIME". It is marked "7" in the Oracle, which is less than the retention. But I suppose this only causes the backup not deleted, but NOT be deleted earlier.
I have RMAN configured TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 7 DAYS;I do a Level 0 backup on SAT, SUN-FRI I do a Level 1 (all to disk)
After I do a successful Level 0 backup, why would I need to keep Level 1 backups around on disk?I know the recovery window is 7 days but is there any way to remove the other 6 days of Level 1 backups after a successful Level 0?To me this seems like a waste of space since I have a succesful Level 0 or am I missing something?
We are having 5 schemas in one database. Now we need to move Oracle server from one machine to another. I can take schema level back up using Export and Import in new server. I am not a DBA as we don't have a DBA I need to do this myself.
I want to know Is there an option to take full database back up including tablespaces and all the schemas in one shot. I read that RMAN is one option. But any option using EXP/IMP for same?
My plan is
-Take list of Tablespaces and create them in new server -Take Exports of schemas from original server -Create schemas and import the data in new server.
URL....I'm practicing for the OCP test and one of the questions is that there is a backup from yesterday and the last archived logs are from the day before yesterday not mentioned if it's cold or hot backup.
If its a cold backup - cant we recover it? is it a must to have the archived redo logs also when recovering a cold backup? That sounds not logical since those logs are made only for a hot backup. URL.....
I have 2 seperate rman backup one backup is of only datafile ,spfile and controlfile which i am able to restore and recover without any problem say bkp1 taken at 10 am
other set of backup is of only archive log files of same day but later time than datafile backup say bkp2 taken at 8pm...if i restore and recover bkp1 and try to restore bkp2 it gives error datafile exist (possibly due to fact both backup have control file)
if i just restore bkp1 and try to restore bkp2 so that i can do one recover at time it gives error datafile permission issue (possibly due to fact both backup have control file)
I want to restore database upto 8pm time how can i use both bkp1 and bkp2 to do it(restore datafiles and apply all archive logs on it)
on 10g R2 on AIX. today (30th of Nov at 7PM) I want to restore my DB from a full backup done on 21 of Nov at 9AM.
Should I : RMAN> Run { 2> shutdown immediate; 3> startup nomount; 4> SET UNTIL TIME "TRUNC(SYSDATE) - 8";Is my "SET UNTIL TIME "TRUNC(SYSDATE) - 8" accurate ?
One of my Friend gets error While datapump Export backup of Full database.

on our 10.2.0.5 database, when we run full backup, my system performance comes to an halt. we run full backup and then do a validate backup to validate the structure of the database etc. Database performance takes a hit and all of the application connections goes in wait mode: On ASH or AWR - this is the top wait i see:
