Backup & Recovery :: Restoring RMAN Backups On Another Server
May 10, 2011
I have a live server on which Oracle 10g Database is running. We take full RMAN Backups everyday. Now we want to restore the RMAN Backup file from the Live server to another machine (which is going to be a test system). I want to restore the latest RMAN backup on the test machine (which is not on network).
When I copy the RMAN backup set in the flash recovery area of the test machine and then use "list backup", the backup set is not listed. I also tried "crosscheck backup" and then "list backup" but still the backup set does not appear. how can I register the backup set from live server into test machine and then restore it.

My scenario is: database is in archivelog mode.
I run DLY cold backups including controlfile & archivelogs and keep 3 gens of backups and archivelogs to 3 days also. What is the correct procedure to restore back to an old cold backup. Database is backed up Mon,Tue,Wed on Thur we require to bring database back to Tuesday DLY security.
I have tried:
startup mount
restore database from tag 'DLYTUE'
recover database
( this just rolls forward on all archive logs once it restores datafiles, not getting to point to alter database open resetlogs.)
Next tried to :
recover database archivelog tag 'DLYTUE'
( same outcome )
What is the correct rman procedure including should I remove old archive logs from working OS directory ? Also need to know once I restore back and open database to TUE security how do you tidy up the archive logs and dumps which are no longer require i.e. : weds..
I have read about using the set until time option but how to I get absolute time from when cold backup completed if this is the correct procedure.

I have an issue with restoring a RMAN backup that i have with me to a new database instance. What i have with me are: 1. Backup of SPFile.
(O1_MF_NCNNF_CTLFILE_BU_92DVGYO2_.BKP)2. Backup of Control file (O1_MF_NNSNF_SPFILE_BU_92DVGW9H_.BKP)3. Full database backup (O1_MF_NNSNF_FULLPROD_BU_92DVGW9H_.BKP)
I have received these files from a customer environment and I need to restore these to a new database instance in a local machine. I have given a attempt as follows (in Oracle 10g): 1, Created a new database instance (Test75) using Oracle Database Configuration Assistant2. SET ORACLE_SID = Test753. Connected to this instance using RMAN4. Tried to restore the SPFILE from the received BKP file.I am getting errors and cannot proceed. I am not sure whether I am executing the correct steps.

Just inherited an 8i DB that is being backed up with then common techniques used prior to RMAN. The tablespace is placed in backup mode, an OS copy of the file is taken, the tablespace is returned online, and the process is repeated until all files captured in an usable state.
It is running in archive log mode on a Linux OS and daily backups are initiated through crontab as well as jobs to purge the redo logs after backup. Backup storage recently filled - working since 2004. Not bad!
I have documented procedures for using these files with an operational 8i DB. Will I be able to restore these files directly into an 11g environment? What is the implication of 8i having DBA managed "RBS" (roll back segments) vs. 11g?
I am thinking I will have to build both versions.

RMAN is not removing obsolete backups and now the backup directory is nearly full.Retention policy is 1, however, there are backups more than 6 weeks old still in the backup directory.crosscheck and delete obsolete commands run every night, and I have also run these manually, yet the backup files still remain.It is like RMAN is not aware of their existance.How can I confirm that RMAN does not need them and therefore delete them manually using OS commands.

I have a problem in running delete obsolete or report obsolete using rman. Although the retention policy is set to "CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 60 DAYS;", when running delete obsolete or report obsolete it deletes or returns all the backupsets till sysdate. What should I do to solve this issue?

is it possible to have a vss snapshot backup on the top of an RMAN backup. Because the link [URL] says that we can have an incremental level 1 backup on the vss snapshot backup.
So I need to know if interoperability between RMAN and VSS exists or not.
Also is it possible to have mixed backups meaning vss snapshot backups and rman backups. Whenever we take snapshot backup, is it updated in the control file?

I am trying to learn about RMAN Incrementally Updated Backups. I created a database on Server A with the parameters and configurations as shown in image attached. I would like to restore full database on Server B (Test DB).The Server B is exactly same in directory structure as the Server A
e.g. ('E:archive','E:incr_backup'). I would like to automate this process so that it updates the Server B on daily basis for R&D purpose.

I've read a lot about the different types of backup available with Oracle (hot and cold backup). However, I was thinking of a different way of performing this task. I'm currently using Windows Server 2008 R2 and Oracle 11g Standard Edition. I'd like to schedule an entire backup of my server via the utility "Windows Server Backup" (available for free).That way, I could recover my entire server with all the programs and files in case the latter crashes.I'm wondering if this solution could be used as a way of backing up (and recovering) the Oracle database. Should I still set up a regular hot backup with the Archivelog mode enabled in case some operations/transactions were being done at the time of the crash (for the data integrity)?

How we can use RMAN backup to restore oracle database when the RMAN backup pushed to tape already and being a OLD backup ( before retention policy date).Just to elaborate a more.. Say my retention policy is 3 days. I want to restore from a old backup like 30 days old.So surely the requesting backup is behind retention date and has been pushed to tape.

We are using Oracle 10g R2 in Windows Server 2003. I'm trying to restore a database in a new server, using RMAN backups.
Our external consultant configured RMAN scripts for full and incremental backups but never tested them . Since he just doesn't show up, I'm forced to tested them, restoring the whole database in a new server.
My instance is named MTDPROD, and I will create all from scratch.
At current server, RMAN files are generated in:
//192.168.1.149/g$/XXXSRV4-ArcLogs/MTDPROD/RMAN
At new server, I run all these commands:
C:>oradim -new -sid MTDPROD -intpwd mtdprod
Instance created
-- I created the relevant folder hierarchy under <ORACLE_BASE>
directory
-- Then, I created the relevant directories for Oracle Database, as
follows:
--a. Create BDUMP, CDUMP, and UDUMP directories under '<ORACLE_ BASE>
[code]....
By instance, I see a lot of this kind of files:
- FULL_MTDPROD_20110529_386_1.BAK
- INCR_MTDPROD_20110621_480_7.BAK
And only see these two files:
- C-2169285856-20110527-03
- C-2169285856-20110527-04
It seems that this C-2169285856-.... files only were on 27/05/2011 and then no more. However, the FULL_... and INCR_.. files are generated every day. The FULL is generated at the end of each month and INCR is generated every day.
This is the backfull.sql:
run {
allocate channel c1 type disk maxpiecesize=4G;
CROSSCHECK archivelog all;
backup
incremental level 0
format '\192.168.1.149g$XXXSRV4-arclogsMTDPRODRMANFULL_
[code]....
This is the backincr.sql:
run {
allocate channel c1 type disk maxpiecesize=4G;
CROSSCHECK archivelog all;
backup
incremental level 1 cumulative
format '\192.168.1.149g$XXXSRV4-arclogsMTDPRODRMANINCR_

I am attempting to use an rman backup form our live server to restore live data over an existing dev database with a different name. I cant use the duplicate command as the versions of oracle are different (10.2.0.4 EE on live, 10.2.0.5 SE on dev) So I copied the backup sets including an autobackup control file onto the dev server. I set the ORACLE_SID to the DEV version (SUN43DEV) and startup nomount and restore controlfile from the backup location. This works and restored the live controlfile. However, I then wanted to mount the database and catalog the backupsets before making a note of the last archivelog etc and restoring the backup with set newname options. But when I try to mount the database I am told that the database has a different name (SUN43 is not SUN43DEV). I read somewhere that I need to set the ORACLE_SID to the live value (SUN43) and restore as that, then use nid TO RESET THE DBID and DATABASE NAME. However, my tnsnames on DEV has no entry for the live database, and we do not have any service defined through ORADIM for the live instance on the dev server. Should I be creating an entry in DEV tnsnames that actually looks at the LIVE server? or do I need to create a service and tns entry etc for SUN43 on my DEV server pointing at the DEV server I have not seen any mention in instructions of creating a service or adding the entry to tnsnames, or indeed adding an entry to the listener for the original live sid. I am worried that if I actually point to the live server then the restore would be attempted on the live server not dev even though I am running it from Dev.
Also, do I need to drop the existing database on DEV before I restore or will RMAN just restore over the top of it?
Finally, if I try to add an entry to the LISTENER.ORA for the new sid, when I stop and start the listener, or reload, the entry is not recognised. I also noticed that the existing SUN43DEV entry is not in there either, yet I can still use that SID - I am assuming that is because the listener is not being used and the sid is recognised from the existence of the service in windows services instead?

Oracle 10gR2 on 64-bit RHEL.Backup Strategy:There will be a level-0 backup of the database every Sunday and level-1 every weekday.Archivelogs will be backed up up every 30 minutes.
Q: How can I delete ALL the archivelog backups that were taken that day (every 30 minutes) right after successful completion of level-0 or level-1 backup?
I want to delete them because they may not be of any use after the level-0 or level-1 backup (am I right)?

We are running 11.2.0.3.2.
In my catalog for the "source" database (rman target db), I have the backupsets for a full database backup ended at Feb. 7, 03:43:37. These are online backups. So, there are archived redo logs being generated while it runs and the following archived redo logs finished at Feb. 7, 04:00:24.
We duplicate databases all the time. So, this is not a new concept for us. The one thing that has changed is that we now back up to disk (using the flashback recovery area) and then later on, initiate a backup to tape. Prior to this go-live, we did all of our backups directly to tape. The catalog does not seem confused. It knows it needs to go to tape because it's beyond the retention for disk backups. The only problem is that it is going to the backup prior to the backupset I want, only for a couple of files.
In the past, when all went directly to tape, we would do a set until time 'Feb. 7, 03:43:37' and it would automatically restore the backupset that finished then and apply archived redo logs as necessary to make a consistent copy. Now, if I use the same model, it's going to a backup set from the prior date for 3 particular files. If I change the time to when the archived redo logs ended their backup, 04:00, it still goes back to the day before, but only for 2 files.
I can list a backup of each specific file and see that the file is in the backupset for which I expect RMAN to pull. How can I figure out a date/time to go back to if not using the method of reviewing the catalog entries and timestamps?

We observed that our RMAN backup was taking more time to complete. CROSSCHECK is the main culprit as because of having data in the catalog for more than 3 years.
So in the part of script we added delte obsolete recovery windoe of 14 days. (Redundancey 1).
Here the problem is we are getting error as
RMAN-03002 - failure of delete command
RMAN-06091 - NO channel allocated for maintenance (of an appropriate type).
Reason: Till 2 years back the backup was stored in tape and after that it got changed to disk. So allocating channel disk to delete obsolet is not working. How we can over come this.
We tried like allocating channel tape sbt_type. It got failed as no media manager information configured. We dont have that information.
How we can overcome this.

For Volume based VSS shadow copy backups for a logged database, I am unsure about the restore method using VSS writer. Also oracle doc does not mention any steps for volume based restore of a logged (archive log mode db) database.

I've done a crosscheck backup in RMAN and the list of expired objects has actually gone down, in number, from the last time I did this ( 2 weeks prior). We do NOT delete anything from our RMAN catalog on a routine basis (ie. no "DELETE EXPIRED BACKUP commands were issued) so normally the list of expired backup objects increases with each RMAN maintenance task we do. Why the number of expired objects might actually go down in this particular instance ?

set dbid to the live number
restore controlfile
alter database mount
catalog'd all the backupsets

but it fails when it tries the restore .. see below ..The path it is showing is the old path from the live server, so it appears to eb ignoring my set newname statements even though they succeeded earlier - should be restoring them to d:oracleoradatasun43dev ?
