I got a call today saying that some users were having a hard time logging on to Oracle using our in-house PowerBuilder-built application. I have Oracle 10.2.0 running on 32-bit Windows 2003. Poked around a little, looking in the dump directories, checking CPU utilization, checking OEM to see if there were any obvious performance issues or blocking issues or whatever - didn't see anything unusual. Logged in with SQL Plus with no problem. Then I checked the audit logs. All we audit is user logons and logoffs. What I was seeing is that a handful of users were showing a logon event with a logoff (action 101) 10 to 15 seconds later. One user in particular was showing this over and over again.

I have an Oracle server with Oracle 11g R2 and need to install its clients over several desktops.I am using 2 separate installs, but I think that this might be redundant. The 2 setups I'm using are:
- ODAC 11.2 Release 3 and Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio (11.2.0.2.1)
- 64-bit Oracle Data Access Components (ODAC) Downloads
- Is really necessary to install both of the 2 setup, or there is something I can use once instead of it?

Some shops run Oracle RAC using "conventional" storage, like emc, netapp, etc. Some shops run Oracle RAC using JBOD, just bunch of disks, all redundancy is managed by ASM.
How would you distinct these two approaches? JBOD approach sounds cheaper, so why serious enterprises are still using traditional conventional storage, like netapp and emc?

I wish to install 11g r1 RAC on my laptop having linux 4 as platform (on vmware) , for that i prepare 4 partition for that (on node1)
/dev/sdb1 - for ocr
/dev/sdb2 - for voting disk
/dev/sdb3 - for asmdisk group
/dev/sda5 - fro asmdisk group
by assuming external redundancy for ocr and voting disk i kept only one disk
and i configured following in /etc/sysconfig/rawdevices
/dev/raw/raw1 /dev/sdb1 -- ocr
/dev/raw/raw2 /dev/sdb2 -- voting disk
/dev/raw/raw3 /dev/sdb3 -- asmdisk group
/dev/raw/raw4 /dev/sdb5 -- asmdisk group
and my question is how node2 can understat these raw device as shared storage?

I have a clients table called CLIENTS. One of the fields in this table is called 'status'
I need to set this status field, depending on if the transactions for this client have passed.
The transactions are in a table called TXNS and has fields
client_id, txn_id, txn_status
txn_status can be 'success' or 'failed'
I need to somehow set the overall 'status' field on CLIENTS to success or fail depending on if any transactions failed or not
So for every client I want to list the status, any query that can possible list the overall status for the client?
select client_id, MAX(status)
from txns
group by client_id
but the max(status) bit needs to get the overall status part

ORACLE was working perfectly on Windows 7 since Jan 2010. A couple of days ago I ran a procedure which was to update a table with 1000 columns. The procedure worked fine till it created a few thousand records and then it slowed down terribly. I closed the SQL Plus command line tool (CTRL C) and tried to restart and then tried to logon to get the following errors-
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
Then I used the Start Database tool (net start OracleTNSListener), but it showed "System 5 error". So after researching online I created Admin profile for WINDOWS 7 and logged in as an administrator. In the INIT.ORA file I increasd the SGA_TARGET to 5G and PGA to 3G. After doing that the above service is running but I'm still getting the ORA-01034 and ORA-27101.
Using cmd prompt in Windows and entering commands sqlplus -> Username: " / as sysdba" gives an insufficient privileges error.

Since 13.00 hours, my clients can't connect to the database, and hence cannot access their application.
They get a ORA-12560 error. protocol adapter.
What I have discovered and done so far.
1. I can tnsping dbname -> OK.
2. I have rebooted both application server and databaseserver multiple times
3. I haven't touched tnsnames.ora, sqlnet.ora and listener.ora and they look to be in perfect mint condition.
4. I have full access to access the database instance via web.
5. I can connect to the database instance via sql
6. I have restarted the oracle-services: oracleDBConsoledbname, OracleOraDb20g_home1TNSListener and OracleServicedbname
7. I have rebooted the client computers, and the file server.
8. I don't see any errors in event logs, both on file server, client computer and database-server.
9. When I press down the link Listener, I get Metric Collection Error, which means I might not access it?
10. The only alert I find is that filesystem D: only has 15.62% available space.
They have been using the database for a very long time without any trouble, and suddenly boom. What do I do? How do I check things?

Is there any logs or query where I can monitor client's IP previously connected to the database? I have created 2 listener with 10.1.2.x and 10.1.100.x network. I would like to separate the oracle traffic to the 10.1.100.x alone. As of now both can connect to the database. I like to monitor if everybody is already transferred to the 10.1.100.x network before I will disable the 10.1.2.x.

Is there a way to put on tnsnames.ora the alternative IP of a server that if the first dont respond it tries the ip of the second? Example:

try
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 10.0.0.1)(PORT = 1521))
except
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 10.0.0.2)(PORT = 1521))
end )
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = tsh1.world)

I have several environment that are physically not connected to each other (except network). Each environment has its own tnsnames.ora. I have downloaded every tnsnames.ora into C:\OraHome1\network\ADMIN, so TOAD opens connect dialog using the file currently named 'tnsnames.ora'. Every time I need to switch to a different environment (and to different connection string) I have to manually rename the 'tnsnames.ora' into something like 'tnsnames.ora.environmentA' and rename another 'tnsnames.ora.environmentB' into 'tnsnames.ora'.
This is inconvenient and time consuming task as I have to restart TOAD after every rename.if there is an easier way to use multiple tnsnames.ora without renaming those.

Possible to call a tnsnames file from master tnsnames like the principle of ifile in the init.ora...My primary tnsnames.ora has a lot of development entries which are repointed frequently, it would work with logistics if I could manage these in a second tns file and load from primary so when my dev instances are repointed I'm not editing the master tnsnames

I am completely new to anything with Oracle or OCI,
Also, basic information:
Language: C
Oracle DB version: 11g
Trying to use OCI
I am trying to write a client that connects to an Oracle database and gets some information (obviously). On the OCILogon() step, I need the username, password, and db address. However, someone said there will be a tnsnames.ora file, and that should be enough.I've searched online and I have not been able to find anything that relates OCILogon() to tnsnames.ora, so here are my questions:
1) Can OCILogon() use tnsnames.ora at all?
2) Is there any other function that I should use instead of OCILogon() that would work with the tnsnames.ora

we have an issue when we are using sql loader with address at command line as below.
sqlldr user/pass@"(DESCRIPTION\=(ADDRESS\=(PROTOCOL\=TCP)(HOST\=host)(PORT\=1521))(CONNECT_DATA\=(SERVER\=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME\=sname)))" control=ctl_filename log=file_name
Ideally we need to include description in tnsnames.ora but its taking time to contact DBA here. Hence we tried with this work around. The same is working fine if we are using sqlplus but sqlloader gives this error.

we have an environment with many Oracle databases in different versions (v8, V9, V10 and V11). Besides that, there are many versions of the Oracle Client in use, ranging from V6 to V11. Many of the clients have a TNSnames.ORA and as was to eb expected, many of these are old as well with a lot of (by now) invalid information in there.
Is there any reasonable maximum size to the TNSnames.ORA file? What are the consequences from going over the max size? Are there alternatives to using TNSnames.ora which you would recommend?

I want to be able to use "localhost" in my tnsnames.ora and listener.ora files but for some reason its not working.
just concentrating on the listener, when I have the following in my listener.ora the database doesnt register with the listener:
########################################
LISTENER =
(DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1521))))
########################################
This is even after using the "alter system register" command. I'm checking whether my database is registering using "lsnrctl services".
With the following in listener.ora all is fine:
########################################
LISTENER =
(DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 192.168.10.152)(PORT = 1521))
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1521))))
########################################
So why wont it work with localhost?! I'm running Oracle 11G on XP Pro.
