Reducing Archive Log Retention?

Nov 26, 2012

After much tedious mucking about in hyperspace, I'm back to tweaking my dataguard environment. I'm generating a lot of stored archive logs, this is causing problems with the backups, (since they live on the same drive, /u01 and also contain backups of the logs) I could move the logs onto /u02 but that's not dealing with the problem IMO.

This is the init script for the primary, (prod)
CODE
archive_lag_target=0
audit_file_dest='/u02/oradata/prod/dump/audit'
compatible='10.2.0'

Undo Retention And DB-flashback Retention Target Parameters?

Mar 13, 2011

The undo_retention is used for read consistency, to avoid snapshot too old.Flashback database is using files in the db_recovery_file_dest.But whether undo_retention has any influence on Flashback drop; Flashback table or Flashback query?Let's say we have set undo_retention = 3600 = 1 hour.And

db_flashback_retention_target = 1440 = 24 hours.

Will it work Flashback drop; Flashback table; Flashback query to get 12 hours back?Additional question. Why Oracle sets undo_retention in seconds and db_flashback_retention_target in minutes?To use the same measure would be more user-friendly to DBAs .

SQL & PL/SQL :: Reducing Function Computation When Called From Statement?

Nov 3, 2011

In the below SQL, I am calling a function "listagg_nm(deptno)", and function is to get all the employee name for a particular department with comma separated

output is:
-------------------------------------------------
DEPTNO SAL LISTAGG_NM(DEPTNO)
10 5000 KING,CLARK,MILLER
10 1300 KING,CLARK,MILLER
10 2450 KING,CLARK,MILLER
20 2975 JONES,SCOTT,FORD,SMITH,ADAMS

[code]....

below are the code

select deptno,sal,listagg_nm(deptno) from emp order by deptno;
FUNCTION listagg_nm (p_deptno NUMBER)
RETURN CLOB
IS
v_str CLOB;

[code]....

My doubt/question is for every row in the SQL the function is being called. t means that for 1st row deptno=10, the function is called and return all concatenated name for department 10, then again for 2nd row deptno=10, it again do the same, similarly for all other department.

Can we avoid this, I mean, if function is already returned a concatenated string of ename for deptno=10, then in the next function call it will checks if it is for same department (i.e. deptno=10) then the function will not go into for loop and it will directly return the concatenated string of ename for deptno=10 which we already done for the first row and so on for other department number ( something like storing the value in variable. Is it possible to achive this and does this is good for performance as we are not going into loop inside the function to return the concatenated string of ename for the same deptno everytime ( I have to return more than 10000 char., so i used clob in function and similarly the numbers of row return by SQL is more than 1000)and also how to code this, I tried but unable to achive.

Sparing Archived Redo Logs From Retention Policy?

Oct 4, 2010

I'm running Oracle 9i on AIX 5.2. I'm not using a recovery catalog, nor am I using media management software. I perform a full, online rman backup of the database and archived redo logs daily to disk, then use operating system commands to copy the backup to tape. There is only space on disk for two days' backups, so I need to have a retention policy of "redundancy = 1", and run a "delete obsolete" prior to the backup. The problem is that I don't want to subject the archived redo logs to this retention policy.

I have two physical standby databases connected by WAN to the primary site, and I might need archived redo logs that are a few days (or more) old in the event of a prolonged WAN outage. I've read about the "keep forever" option, but apparently it isn't available without using a recovery catalog. Is there any way to spare the archived redo logs from my retention policy?

Note: I want to "protect" the actual archived redo logs from the retention policy, not the backups of the archived redo logs.

RMAN :: Restoring Backup From Tape Beyond Retention Policy?

How we can use RMAN backup to restore oracle database when the RMAN backup pushed to tape already and being a OLD backup ( before retention policy date).Just to elaborate a more..  Say my retention policy is 3 days. I want to restore from a old backup  like 30 days old.So surely the requesting backup is behind retention date and has been pushed to tape.

DBMS_UNDO_ADV.LONGEST_QUERY(SYSDATE-2,SYSDATE)
----------------------------------------------
379650
SQL> select dbms_undo_adv.required_retention from dual;

[code]....

In above situation what should be my first choice (assuming increasing space is not an issue) - increase undo tablespace or increase undo retention?

If latter is the choice then what should be the value? Because as I understand present 96000 value is taken as lower limit and because of auto tuning the actual value (TUNED_UNDORETENTION) being used was 345600 In that case shall I set it to something > max(maxquerylen) i.e 379,650 + X?Or I shall increase the undo tablespace size?

From Undo Advisor output it looks to me that even if I increase the undo retention to 379650 current undo size will be able to support it (may be at the expense of DMLs)Is that right?

Backup & Recovery :: RMAN Backup Multiple Retention

Mar 21, 2012

I am designing the scripts for RMAN backup.

Currently we have 14 days retention policy for daily and weekly backup. but we will have 186days retention for monthly backup, that's mean its should be recoverable around that 3 month (for monthly).

My question is, What should I put the scripts for monthly backup ?

I saw some example its for offline backup:

But I want the backup should be online ?

Currently our weekly backup like this

#!/bin/bash

export ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/BWD/112_64
export ORACLE_SID=BWD
LOGFILE=/tmp/BWD-weekly-`date +%y%m%d%H%M`.out

And Daily backup:

#!/bin/bash

SID=EPD
export ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/$SID/112_64
export ORACLE_SID=$SID
#LOGFILE=/tmp/EPD-weekly-`date +%y%m%d%H%M`.out

RMAN Archive Log Backup

We are having an intermittent problem related to failing RMAN archive log backups. I have the incident file as well if that is of any use.

Could the problem be related to running two backups in parallel?

We run full backups once a week and both this time and last time the archive log backup failed it was in conjunction to when the full backup also was running.

Is there any other solution to the problem than restarting the oracle instance?

Since this is a busy production instance it is a big problem for us to restart it outside of maintenance windows.

Recovery Area Cannot Be Used For Archive Log?

Sep 13, 2013

I`m using the the version 11.0.2.3 for testing.  I read a line as below from the OCP book.

If none of the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n parameters have been set, then transitioning. the database to archivelog mode will internally set LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_10 to the flash recovery area, if it has been configured. In my database the fast recovery already been set as below.

SQL> show parameter db_recovery

NAME                                 TYPE        VALUE
------------------------------------ ----------- ------------------------------
db_recovery_file_dest                string      +FASTRECOVERY
db_recovery_file_dest_size           big integer 4248M

So I thought if I turn the database into archive log mode, then the log_archive_dest_10 will be set as the same value as db_recovery_dest.

SQL> alter database archivelog;

Database altered.

SQL> alter database open;

Database altered.

SQL> show parameter log_archive_dest

NAME                                 TYPE        VALUE
------------------------------------ ----------- ------------------------------
log_archive_dest                     string
log_archive_dest_1                   string
log_archive_dest_10                  string

See, after the database become archive, the log_archive_dest_10 still be empty.  So is there any thing wrong with my understanding?

Implementing Archive Log Mode In RAC Environment

Questions about implementing ARCHIVELOG mode in RAC environment.

Oracle 11gR1 RAC + ASM database. I'd like to implement ARCHIVELOG mode. Each node will have its own archive log.

Does it make sense to place archivelogs on ASM (shared storage)? Or the best practice would be to have some aside "BACKUP" server to place and keep archivelogs from all the RAC nodes there?

Additional question is about archive logs space required estimation. If it's correct to know estimate archive logs space required to get the daily avg number of switch logs

from (select trunc(first_time), count(*) n_of_switch_logs

and multiply it on size of single redolog?
