i was unable to log in to oracle database. i am doing the following steps :
- sqlplus /nolog
- connect /as sysdba
connect to an idle instance
- shutdown
ORA - 01034: oracle not available
ORA - 27101: shared memory realm does not exist
each command i give is showing the following error: ORA - 44412: XE edition memory parameter invalid or not specified.
If I have to create a database on server which has already 5 databases running , how will I set the memory (pga,sga) values . AFAIK it depends on o/s is linux and database version is 10g and 11g .
1)free avaialble memory on server .
2)kernel parameters .
what else has to be considering while initialize memory parameters .
i try to startup a database, and get that obsolete/deprecated parameter specified(ORA-32004: obsolete and/or deprecated parameter(s) specified)so i try to reset the parameter, but it seems it is already reset(not in spfile), so maybe this is in memory. SO now i try to reset with scope = memory or both, it gives this error(ORA-32029: resetting with SCOPE=MEMORY or SCOPE=BOTH is currently not supported).
what to do, because now i cannot reset with scope = memory and in spfile it is not there but still it comes in deprecated parameter.
I recently performed an upgrade on a new server from oracle 10gr2 to oracle 11gr2 (11.2.0.3).
I take the rman backup from oracle 10g server and restore it on new server where I installed oracle 11gr2.
But on my previous oracle 10gr2 server I enabled the auditing. After doing successful upgrade now when I try to login with any user except sys I receive the following error:

while i log on to the oracel, i get the following error "Ora-12705 - Invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified" AND i could not log on. how can i rectify this problem?

On my client side, the oracle ennvironment variable for the NLS are
export ORA_NLS33=$ORACLE_HOME/ocommon/nls/admin/data
export NLS_LANG=american_america.we8iso8859p9
same is on the RDBMS side.
SQL> show parameter NLS_LANG

When i try to do a manual connect with sqlplus, it succeeds

I have tried 'unsetting' the NLS_LANG parameter on the client side but did not work.
pga_aggregate_target has been incorrectly set to 21gb in one of our databases.

When I try to change it to 1g or 800m I get the following error.

how I can set the pga_aggregate_target right, I am not sure whether bouncing will work or not since i m doubtful that I may get the same error related to smmmax_size while bouncing with the new pga_aggregate_target.

The only supported technique for converting an EE database to SE is export-inport, as documented in note 139642.1. Our client is reluctant to do this because of the downtime involved. It is however possible to open the EE database from an SE home, no problem.

I am on Oracle 11.2.0.3 on Linux and have implemented Oracle Text.I created Oracle Text indexes with default setting. However in an oracle white paper I read that the default setting may not be right. Here is the excerpt from the white paper by Roger Ford:URL....(Part of this white paper below....)Index Memory.
As mentioned above, cached $I entries are flushed to disk each time the indexing memory is exhausted. The default index memory at installation is a mere 12MB, which is very low. Users can specify up to 50MB at index creation time, but this is still pretty low. This would be done by a CREATE INDEX statement something like: CREATE INDEX myindex ON mytable(mycol) INDEXTYPE IS ctxsys.context PARAMETERS ('index memory 50M'); Allow index memory settings above 50MB, the CTXSYS user must first increase the value of the MAX_INDEX_MEMORY parameter, like this: begin ctx_ adm. set_ parameter('max_index_memory', '500M'); end; The setting for index memory should never be so high as to cause paging, as this will have a serious effect on indexing speed. 1) To apply this procedure (ctx_adm.set_parameter) required me to login as CTXSYS user. Is that right? or can it be avoided and be done from the application schema? This user CTXSYS is locked by default and I had to unlock it. Is that ok to do in production?
2) What is the value that I should use for the max_index_memory should it be 500 mb - my SGA is 2 GB in Dev/ QA and 3GB in production. Also in the index creation what is the value I should set for index memory parameter - I had left that at default but how should I change now? Should it be 50MB as shown in example above?
3) The white paper also refer to rebuilding an index at some interval like once in a month: ALTER INDEX DR$index_name$X REBUILD ONLINE; We are on Oracle 11g and the white paper was written in 2003.

from what I read I beleive this will initially grab 2GB of memory on startup and will grab up to to 3GB of memory total for the SGA. The "total" memory can be allocated to different peices of the SGA when needed but will never exceed 3GB. Is this correct or would these settings infringe on any available memory on a system that is already tight on memory?
Secondly, what happens if both these values are set to the same value?
Can i know the internal process of initialization of DB into memory in timesten , when a new connection is establishing? Will timesten create tables and indexes in RAM when first connection is established if the RAM policy is default?
want to know the internal functional flow of timesten when any command is fired against it.

I have started to migrate 11.2.0.3 database from Enterprise to Standard edition with expdp/impdp (RHEL box). I've managed to transfer database without any problem (ok i had little difficulties with bitmap indexes but never mind).
But now i do not have all public synonyms in place as i already knew. So i have to create sql script and i have found several good ones. My question is do i need to recreate all public synonyms or there is a exceptions in my case because i now have Standard Edition database (old one was Enterprise)?
I am using Oracle 10.2.0.3.0 standard edition. Now i want to use Oracle XDB in the same.
Can i use this directly or does this require license.
Recently we have downgraded our database from enterprise to standard edition.....our sga size before downgrade was 11 gb and now it is 11gb and there is no as such problem in database..I have read somewhere that standard edition doesn't support sga size more than 2 gb .

I am checking out licenses. We all know that EE is much more expensive than SE. But many customers do have EE installed - unsure if they need all the features at all. After several years of production, a downgrade is considered 'risky' and we continue to pay the full EE.
How can we check and be sure that a downgrade to SE would not be any problem?
Some checks include:
* partitioning used in user schemas? --> no downgrade to EE
* bitmap indexes in user schemas? --> no downgrade to EE
How can we complete this list, or is there some script to make this easy?
Just installed Ora 10g Express Edition. It has a sample database. But is there a rather larger database outside that I can download and import into Oracle for some learning reasons?

Ours is Oracle 11.2.0.2.0 Db 4 instances RAC on Unix AIX OS.Since long we are facing problem that CPU utilization reached 100% and reboot is required alteast once or twice a month.On seeing the Events Logs we find that the Event "CURSOR PIN S WAIT FOR X" is consuming a lot of waits.
On analyzing i came to know that we are firing same query from Application 15 to 20 lack times for which a lot of Mutex keeps spining for getting Shared Mode and consumes a large amount of CPU.
