Server Administration :: Increase Interval For Date Ranges - Maintaining Partitions?
Jun 3, 2010
I am studying Oracle® Database VLDB and Partitioning Guide 11g Release 2 (11.2),
ORA-14767: Cannot specify this interval with existing high boundsby giving an example other than given in the above mentioned document.
the example given in the document is as follows:
To increase the interval for date ranges, then you need to ensure that you are at a relevant boundary for the new interval. For example, if the highest interval partition boundary in your daily interval partitioned table transactions is January 30, 2007 and you want to change to a monthly partition interval, then the following statement results in an error:
CREATE TABLE transactions
( id NUMBER
, transaction_date DATE
, value NUMBER)

When I connect to a Oracle database(remote) using TOAD client, because of the settings of timeout done at the server end(in Oracle), the TOAD session gets time out in 5 minutes.
I want to know how I can increase the timeout interval or if I can keep on pinging the database server so that the TOAD connection does not gets timeout?
PS: When we connect to a unix server using putty, we can keep on pining the server at regular timeout interval by going to Change Settings->Connection->Set KeepAlive
Is there a similar way for TOAD?

I am using Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.3.0 - 64bit Production.I have a range partitioned table having lobs as basicfile. Due to storage issue and other business constraints , it is determined not to change existing lobs to securefile.
However ,we want new lobs to be in securefile and alter table to have interval partition+.While researching, I found sql to change lob in range partition to securefile by using
alter table t1 add partition t1_p2 value less than (10000) lob (col3) store as securefile (tablespace tbs_sf1)
What to do similar in case of interval partition.

I'm trying to work out how to take a table like this:
IDDate
12502-Feb-07
12516-Mar-07
12523-May-07
12524-May-07
12525-May-07
33302-Jan-09
33303-Jan-09
33304-Jan-09
33317-Mar-09
And display the data like this:
IDPeriodPeriod StartPeriod End
125102-Feb-0702-Feb-07
125216-Mar-0716-Mar-07
125323-May-0725-May-07
333102-Jan-0904-Jan-09
333217-Mar-0917-Mar-09
As you can see, it's split the entries into date ranges. If there is a 'lone' date, the 'period start' and the 'period end' are the same date.

I checked the size of the database that I created. It showed the total size of the database as 2 GB and used space as 2 GB. If I want to increase the total size of the database to 50 GB, what should i do? Now which is the disk space size? Windows or Oracle?

In an attempt to take older data off line and allow database refreshes to be faster, tablespaces associated with partitioned table data for a given time period was taken off line, leaving only tablespaces that relate to the current time period online. In effect, tablespaces related to 2010 and earlier were taken offline from a table.
1. Without giving a filter on the partition key (the business date) to scan for data greater than the dates in the off lined tablespace partition, we get a ORA-376/ORA-1110 error (data file cannot be read at this time).
2. Materialized views using fast refresh or refresh on commit, will also not work because of the partitions being off line.
Queries directly querying the tables are manageable from an application point of view. But the materialized views failing to aggregate is a bigger problem.
how we can manage this situation? I know that I can move the partitions to a different table in a tablespace to be taken off line. But if possible, we wanted to solve this without doing a move partition.

We had a database (DB A)that is having version 9.2.0.6.0.This DB is having multiple tables and volume of 6 million in individual tables.Another database is also 9.2.0.6.0 (DB B), this DB has Mviews pointing to DB A. Mviews are refreshed in every 15 mins, with fast refresh option in 90% cases and remaining having complete refresh.
Last weekend we have migrated DB 2 to version 10.2.0.4.0 - 64bi and on another server. After version upgrade and DB migration complete refresh was done once for all mviews.
Now DB A is generating huge amount of archive log and also it's UNDO space is getting fully consumed causing performance issue and DB hang.what has gone wrong and what we can do to improve response of DB A and also to reduce size of Archive log ?

I have to get totals from a table using different criteria, which I do like this:
<QUERY>
SELECT DISTINCT
SUM(CASE WHEN MYCONDITION1 THEN 1 ELSE 0 END) AS TOTAL1,
SUM(CASE WHEN MYCONDITION2 THEN 1 ELSE 0 END) AS TOTAL2
FROM TABLE1, TABLE2
WHERE COMMON_CONDITION1 AND COMMON_CONDITION2
AND datevalue1 >= DATE1 AND datevalue1 <= DATE2;
<QUERY>
This works fine and I get the intended result. Now, I have to repeat this for every week for the last 12 months, excluding holidays period. So, I generate a set of date ranges which will be used in the queries. So, I repeat the above sql statement for all the date ranges, which is a lengthy process. How can I do that in a single shot and get all totals for each date range.

Lets say I have a table,
Claim_id,dateA,dateB
it has 5 million rows
I need to see if any dateA,dateB of a claim_id falls within any other dateA,dateB of another claim ID
Basically
select * from table a, table b, where
(a.dateA,a.dateB) overlaps (b.dateA,b.dateB)
now I can write the query simply enough by aliasing the table 2x but no matter how I try I cant see a way to get around doing a Carteasion join
Index are ignored because it has to scan the full table anyway even if I hint the index
and the cost of the join ends up astronomical aka 5million rows X 5 million Rows....
And it ends up doing the full table scan a few times
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
this table is expected to grow to at least 20 million records

I'm looking to see if there's a solution to my problem that I can use within the context of my business application interface into an Oracle RDMS. I have access to write custom SQL statements and functions, but I am NOT able to create stored procedures using the interface I have.
The challenge I am having is comparing date ranges. I have a table containing two columns labelled START TS TIME and END TS TIME, both of type 'Date'. I have figured out how to query each row against a given Next Session Start and Next Session End and determine if each row overlaps that row.
I need a procedure that will be recursive: that is, set Next Session Start and Next Session End to START TS TIME and END TS TIME of the first row, compare all rows against it, then set Next Session Start and Next Session End to the next row, compare all rows, ... for all rows in the table. I want to know what the maximum number of matches is (i.e. the most time periods that overlap).
If I could use a stored procedure I could complete this query easily. Is there other techniques (i.e. functions) available to leverage in order compare each row of date ranges against ALL rows in the same table?

ID NAME CRT_DTE
1 AB 03/05/1992
2 EF 15/04/1995
3 CD 20/08/1995
4 GH 01/01/1999
5 UV 08/07/2001

I want a query which splits the total time period (from min crt_dte to max crt_dte) into year ranges. For eg, lets say a range of 5 years then I need to get results like below.
start_dte end_dte
---------- ----------
03/05/1992 03/05/1997
03/05/1997 03/05/2002
03/05/2002 03/05/2007
03/05/2007 09/03/2012
how to write this query.

I have this requirement to pull the ACTIVE days that a participant holds true in a given month for a specific position he/she holds.
The three date ranges here are: LOA dates(leave of absence), XFER dates(TRANSFER in/out of the position),Quality compliance(QUAL start/end dates).
So,
INACTIVE DAYS = [(LOA + XFER + WW) - OVERLAPPING DAYS OF (LOA+XFER+QUAL)]
Here is the scenario:
---------------------
CREATE TABLE PAYEES
(
RUN_PERIOD DATE NOT NULL,
PAYEEID VARCHAR2(20 BYTE) NOT NULL,
LOA_START_DATE DATE,
LOA_END_DATE DATE,
[Code].....
---------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------
Now Active days is to be pulled for Two payees - TESTD01 and TESTD02 for the period of June month.
Desired Results :
Payee InActive_days Active_Days Period
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TESTD01 13 17 June
TESTD02 14 16 June
I am able to pull out the no of days on a individual basis(count of days for Xfer/LOA/Qual) but I am really not sure as to how should i go about determining the overlapping days between 3 date ranges to determine the ACTIVE/INactive days.

I have a table which has 2 range partitions on a date column currently.
CREATE TABLE TABLEA (
RUN_TIME INT NOT NULL
)
PARTITION BY RANGE (RUN_TIME)
(
PARTITION DATAONE VALUES LESS THAN (20110101000000) TABLESPACE SPACE1
PARTITION DATATWO VALUES LESS THAN (MAXVALUE) TABLESPACE SPACE2
);
I am planning to drop one partition i.e DATAONE. So table will have one partition left for MAXVALUE. Does it make sense to have a partition with MAXVALUE? Isn't it same as TABLEA in terms of number of records? TABLEA is also in tablespace SPACE2. Should i remove partition DATATWO also? If i have to what is the best way to move all DATATWO records to base table TABLEA?

Other than the obvious to me, where interval partitioning creates partitions as needed. Is there any performance benefit from using interval partitions vs date range partitions.
One draw back for me is that developers do access the partition name in some of their queries, so if I use date range partitioning this will not break their code. I could not find a way to assign a name to a partition when using intervals, is this always system generated or can this be over-ridden.
I am running Oracle 11.1.0.7 soon to be running on 11.2.0.0

Let's say I have this table:
create table TEST
(
CF VARCHAR2(16),
START_DATE DATE,
END_DATE DATE
)
with
insert into test (CF, START_DATE, END_DATE)
values ('ME', to_date('01-01-2011', 'dd-mm-yyyy'), to_date('31-12-2010', 'dd-mm-yyyy'));
I need make a select where I get n rows, where n is the number of trimesters that compose the date interval in the table. Each of the returned rows must have as start_date/end_date the boundaries of that trimester.(ALL start dates are the first day of a month, and all end dates are the last day of a month)
In this case I need to get:
ME - 01/01/2010 - 31/03/2010
ME - 01/04/2010 - 30/06/2010
ME - 01/07/2010 - 30/09/2010
ME - 01/10/2010 - 31/12/2010

I am working on an archiving strategy. I want to roll off transactions that are older than seven days, but only if they are flagged as Completed. The numbers of transactions are very large so this is a worthwhile venture.
The only strategy I have been able to come up with so far is to partiton on date. Then when 7 days comes up, sweep the about-to-be archived day for the few remaining not Completed transactions, put those into a new table (a new version of this partiton) and switch partitions. Each day I do this until the older parititions are empty.
