Security :: Spanish Character Encryption In UTF8
Jan 9, 2012
Recently the Oracle10g database has been migrated to UTF8 character set and the following have failed.
1. The password applied is not getting encrypted and the password contains a spanish characters.
Getting the below error.
"10057:ERROR WHILE ENCRYPTING GIVEN STRING:String:Uñomasuño5.::ORA-28232: invalid input length for obfuscation toolkit:-28232:ORA-28232: invalid input length for obfuscation toolkit"
The algorithm used for encryption DES. I tried with DESENCRYPT , DES3ENCRPYT and MD5 and it failing.

While searching for password encryption I came across these statements.
1.Password Encryption While Connecting. This protection is always in force, by default. Passwords are always automatically and transparently encrypted during network (client/server and server/server) connections, using a modified DES (Data Encryption Standard) or 3DES algorithm, before sending them across the network.
Confirm whether by default oracle encrypts the password before sending it to the database across the network even when the clear text password is used for connecting from a jdbc client.

Our Audit Company has given us a recommendation:"Old DB Link encrypted Passwords: The password of the Oracle databases links are encrypted using DES (password starts with 05). This encryption methord is known and users can decrypt the passwords using a simple SQL query. Please recreate the database links to use the new encryption method (password starts with 06)."What does it mean and how can we perform this recommendation?

I insert values into test table. However, I still can see salary value by select SQL.
What is wrong?
my db is oracle 11.2.01 in 2008 SP window

Our client is having requirements that data should be encrypted through-out the process (from transaction level to backup level).
Requirements are as below -
1) Data should be encrypted and can be access only through application (through front end).
2) Even if pl/sql, sql installed, developer user cannot able to fetch data from database.
3) Even DBA, should not have access to fetch the data from the database.
4) Only assigned DBA, should fetch details from database (provided he/she should have details of database as well as application's user / password).
5) It should be restricted by ip and user details (such as ip of application server with user/password of user).
6) Changes should be purely done from database level only.

We have got a new requirement wherein, The customer wanted the DBA Vendor (US) NOT to access the confidential information (ALL Columns) in the DB tables of PRODUCTION database. This is for few applications to comply with with export control rules. The thin support by Customer DBA will be allowed to access the Data, if required .
1) Web Based Interface ?.
2) DB Encryption (But if we encrypt ALL columns Serious performance issue expected, File level will not restrict DB level access)
3) Special setting on DB (DBA to do only backup and restoration related work only - But cannot access data)
4) Standard Tools / Utilities / Others ??.
Technologies are Oracle ,SQL

We have an application that fetches and writes data into oracle database through pro c. oracle datyabase is on another server.
We are storing some secure information into oracle database so we want to encrypt the data sent by our aplication into oracle database.We do not want to use SSL(i.e certificates) and also do not want to make use of Advance Security Option available in oracle and also do not want to make any changes in sqlnet.ora file on server side.
achieve encryption of traffic between our application and Oracle database?

I am having difficulty importing Spanish text files into my Oracle 11g XE database. Below is my external table declaration code. The external file is attached.
CREATE OR REPLACE DIRECTORY xtern_data_dir AS 'C:/.../';
CREATE TABLE ET_SLBLWD0_SPNSH_DESC (
LBL_WARN VARCHAR(4),
LBL_TXTSNS NUMBER(2),
LBL_DESCS VARCHAR2(55),
[Code]...
All 406 rows seem to import fine, but do not display the Spanish accent characters correctly. Note the strange characters:
SQL> SELECT count(*) FROM ET_SLBLWD0_SPNSH_DESC;
COUNT(*)
----------
406
SQL> select * from et_slblwd0_spnsh_desc;
LBL_ LBL_TXTSNS LBL_DESCS L L L L
---- ---------- ------------------------------------------------------- - - - -
0001 1 Puede causar somnolencia. El alcohol puede intensificar
0001 2 este efecto. Tenga cuidado cuando conduzca veh¿los
0001 3 automotores u opere maquinaria peligrosa.
0002 1 Importante: Acabe todo este medicamento a menos que
0002 2 quien le escriba la receta le indique lo contrario.
[Code]...
I tried modifying my external table declaration by adding CHARACTERSET WE8ISO8859P1 and CHARACTERSET WE8MSWIN1252, but that just seems to cause the system to throw out ALL the rows containing Spanish characters:
COUNT(*) ---------- 197
SQL> select * from et_slblwd0_spnsh_desc;
LBL_ LBL_TXTSNS LBL_DESCS L L L L
---- ---------- ------------------------------------------------------- - - - -
0001 1 Puede causar somnolencia. El alcohol puede intensificar
0001 3 automotores u opere maquinaria peligrosa.
0002 1 Importante: Acabe todo este medicamento a menos que
0002 2 quien le escriba la receta le indique lo contrario.
0005 1 Debe tomar este medicamento con mucha agua.
0006 1 Puede descolorar la orina o las heces.
[Code]...
The log file specifies the following error on the bad rows:
error processing column LBL_DESCS in row xxx for datafile ...SLBLWD0_CRLF.TXT ORA-12899: value too large for column LBL_DESCS (actual: 55, maximum: 55)
What can I do to import these Spanish characters correctly?

how do we know database character set is either single character set or multi character set?
While changing character-set from AL32UTF8 to WE8MSWIN1252 got "ORA-12712: new character set must be a superset of old character set".
Below are steps taken to resolve the issue -
ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET WE8MSWIN1252;
i got this error: ORA-12712: new character set must be a superset of old character set
below are the commands executed by me:
SQL> SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
SQL> CONNECT SYS/password AS SYSDBA;
SQL> STARTUP MOUNT;
SQL> ALTER SYSTEM ENABLE RESTRICTED SESSION;
SQL> ALTER DATABASE OPEN;
SQL> ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET INTERNAL_USE WE8MSWIN1252;
SQL> SHUTDOWN;
SQL> STARTUP;
SQL> QUIT;
And its working...
I have not done it in proper order. Neither have done ccsscan. Still, no user reported any issues. Do my changes truncated the data?

I am trying to store Chinese characters in certain fields in my database:
NLS_CHARACTERSET is UTF8
Version 11.2
Client NLS_LANG = UTF8
Client Region Settings = Simplified Chinese (PRC)
To Test - I have a string value I am trying to write to a field in Oracle. Looking at the source string with a hex editor, the multibyte value is E6 9C AC.
Looking the character up in UTF8 tables (U + 672C ) I can the symbol matches what I see when I look at the string with my editor.
I write the string to a field in Oracle. I can select from the field in SQLPlus and see the correct symbol.
However, when I dump the field I get the hex values B1,BE not E6 9C AC as I would expect.
explain why? And how is B1, BE getting translated back to the 'correct' symbol?

I have a problem spooling flat files in utf 8. I have 3 different sql that needs to be spooled regulary in utf8 format.the first two containing special chars is spooled without any problem, but the third that is containg only numbers and pipe-s is spooled in ansi format.
i have set nls_lang=.utf8 in my shell script, but that only worked at the first two sql the last doesnt work.
I have also tried to convert file using iconv command, but the output is still in ansi (only works if i put a special char in the ansi file then it converts to utf8 without problem) if i open the file in notepad and save as utf8 then it works, but i cannnot reach the same from unix script.

Users are reporting that are unable to use the NVARCHAR(4000) due to the character set which is set in the database.
Currently NLS_CHARACTERSET is set to AL32UTF8
and NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET from AL16UTF16
They want me to change both the character set to UTF8, so that they can use the NVARCHAR2(4000) datatype in their tables.
As UTF8 is the subset characterset and I did the cs scan and this found characterset can't be modified to UTF8 and there may be the data dictionary corruption.
Is there any other way so that users can use the NVARCHAR(4000) as datatype. And the reason why NVARCHAR2 is required is, users are trying to import the data from other database which is using NVARCHAR(4000) as one of the field.

We got a big problem that we have a db link to connect to sql server(big 5).
In original setting, there is no Chinese characters in the data. We simply grab the data from sql server and do not have any issue. But now we have data with Big5. When we import the data into our Oracle DB, which uses UTF8, all the text becomes "?
Changing character set in DB is not possible. We need to convert the text into unicode format, or allow oracle/sql server to convert it automatically.

I am trying to have an encryption logic written in Pl/SQL that could decrypt the value which is encrypted in Dot Net, using AES128 algorithm. Everytime when i try to have the decryption done, i lands up in one or the other error message. Below is the code snippet which i use. create or replace
FUNCTION decryptAES (EncryptedText IN VARCHAR2,EncKey IN VARCHAR2) RETURN VARCHAR2 DETERMINISTIC IS key_bytes_raw RAW (2048); l_ decrypted_raw RAW (2048); encryption_type PLS_INTEGER := DBMS_CRYPTO.ENCRYPT_AES128; BEGIN key_bytes_ raw:= UTL_RAW. I am trying to set-up network encryption.I have added following parameters to my server side sqlnet.ora file:
SQLNET.ENCRYPTION_SERVER = REQUIRED
SQLNET.ENCRYPTION_CLIENT = REQUIRED
SQLNET.ENCRYPTION_TYPES_SERVER =RC4_256
SQLNET.ENCRYPTION_TYPES_CLIENT =RC4_256
SQLNET.CRYPTO_CHECKSUM_SERVER = REQUIRED
SQLNET.CRYPTO_CHECKSUM_CLIENT = REQUIRED
SQLNET.CRYPTO_CHECKSUM_TYPES_SERVER = (MD5)
SQLNET.CRYPTO_CHECKSUM_TYPES_CLIENT = (MD5)
As per my understanding connections should start to fail from client side after addition of these parameter on server side sqlnet.ora (no changes to client side sqlnet.ora).I am still able to connect to this server without connections getting failed.
I already checked aso is installed on this database.Just to add it is a RAC database with 2 nodes.

I'm trying to insert a character from the extended ascii character set. Specifically, there's a company that has an accented e () in the name. Right now, the company name doesn't have the e at all, accent or no accent. So I'm trying to do an update, something like
update table1 set company_name='blah" where company='blah'
It runs, but doesn't do the update. Even when I try to forcefully do an insert (instead of an update) I get nowhere; the accented is simply dropped. So the basic question is, how do you insert extended ascii characters into oracle?

I am using C++ OCI LIB, to insert some report data from remote OCI client to oracle 11 server. This data is read by another process to create the report.The DB CHARSET is UTF-8. But the report tool expects the data to be ISO08859-1 encoded. So while inserting the data into the database i specify the following LANG and CHARSET for my table colulmn in client:
The TARGET DB CHARSET is UTF-8
NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1
size_t csid = 871; // UTF-8
OCIAtrSet((void *) bnd1p, (ub4) OCI_HTYPE_BIND,
*(void *)&csid*,
(ub4) 0,
(ub4)OCI_ATTR_CHARSET_ID, errhp);
This solution works for almost every case of ASCII and Extended ASCII Charest but we are facing issues if we have few specific characters to be inserted.f we are trying to insert single beta character [β] through client, the data goes empty to the column.
Beta Character details:
DEC OCT HEX BIN Symbol Description
223 337 DF 11011111 ß Latin small letter sharp s - ess-zed
DB Output after insert single β:
select rawtohex(NAME) from PERSONS where EID=333;
RAWTOHEX(NAME)
---------------------------
But if the string is *"ββ"* everything work fine:
DB Output for "ββ":
select rawtohex(NAME) from PERSONS where EID=333;
RAWTOHEX(NAME)
---------------------------

We are attempting to configure/use OEM (Oracle 10.2.0.4) on Solaris, and when logging in to OEM we are directed to the Database Down page, stating Enterprise Manager is unable to connect to the database instance, but showing all the components as up/open. After checking the log, I found the following error:
IO exception: Unknown Encryption or Data Integrity algorithm
I checked the settings in emoms.properties and compared the encryption parameters to those in our SQLNet file, and all match up. We are NOT using Grid Control, just db control connecting to 1 instance.
