Security :: Applying Critical Patch Update?
May 23, 2012
Just to confirm with you if we can apply the October 2011 Critical Patch Update (CPU) to address vulnerabilities covered from CPU 2007 up to CPU 2011?
The PC Server (staging) where patching will be applied is running under Windows Vista have not been patched since it's database creation. This is maintained by our Contractors.

Is this the correct forum to ask questions about Oracle CPU's?
I ran the CPU-JUL-2012 on a workstation for version 11.1.0.7, got Return Code 0 and "OPatch Succeeded".
Yet a Retina scan ran after shows no change....?
I've tried reading the availability document, but I have no experience at Oracle patching.

I installed Oracle 10.2.0.1.0 in RH Linux 4.5. After that applied patch for 10.2.0.4.0. Everything went smoothly, but at the last steps I unknowingly clicked next button. I dont know whether some scripts is to be run as I did during installation of 10.1.0.4.0. If it is to be done I didn't do that.
How can I proceed now? If some scripts to be run where is the location? Will it cause any issue if I running it after completing the update?

Quote:Every patch or patch set also has a patch number to identify it
All patch and patch set releases carry version numbers.
For ex : Oracle 10g Release 10.2.0.1, then an available patch set might be 10.2.0.2 , .... , 10.2.4.0 , 10.2.5.0
My QUES is : How can i identify Patch no ? How it is differ from patchsets no ?..

Apparently it was a MS known issue and it has been fixed in .NET v1.1 which is what was installed(& I didn't have any problems) before server team installed the latest security update which was .NET v2.0

Where to take and how to find the latest versions of patches GI Patch Set Update for Windows?
For a DB there is article "*ALERT: Oracle 11g Release 2 (11.2) Support Status and Alerts [ID 880782.1]*". I am signed on notification messages by mail. When article *880782.1* changes, to me the notification message comes. From *880782.1* it is possible to pass in article "*Oracle Database, Networking and Grid Agent Patches for Microsoft Platforms [ID 161549.1]*". Here there are links to the latest versions of patches.
The latest versions for GI Patch Set Update it is possible to look in article "*Oracle Recommended Patches - Oracle Database [ID 756671.1]*" but here is not present Windows platform.
1). Where to take and how to find the latest versions of patches GI Patch Set Update for Windows?
2). Whether It is possible GI Patch Set Update for Windows to find by means of searching on tab MOS "*Patches & Updates*"?

I am using 'Novell Sentinel Log Manager' to collect/fetch logs from my Oracle 11g R2.To enable auditing, first I did following:
login as sys, then
SQL> create user testuser identified by "testuser";
SQL> grant connect to testuser
SQL> grant dba to sharf
SQL> grant CREATE SESSION to testuser;
SQL> grant select on v_$session to testuser;
SQL> grant select on v_$version to testuser;
SQL> grant select on SYS.DBA_AUDIT_TRAIL to testuser;
SQL> grant select_catalog_role to testuser;
SQL> grant select any dictionary to testuser;
Now logon/logof of user 'testuser' are logged , as well as if testuser drops a table or creates a table, its also logged . but when 'testuser' insert a new record, this information does not logged ;( while I need to know exactly what was added SQL> insert into emp (empid, name, salary) values (10002, 'Ron', 6000)
likewise if 'testuser' modify/update an existing record it also does not logged.
SQL> update emp set salary=700 where empid=10001;
which sql statements I have to execute to start auditing 'insert' and 'update', so that I know what was added/inserted and exactly what was updated/ changed/modify by user 'testuser'.

1)I have created a complex view, and created an instead of trigger on this view
example:
create or replace trigger tr_x instead of before update on test_view_name for each row
-------
2) I have created an update policy on this view
DBMS_RLS.ADD_POLICY (
object_schema := schema_name,
object_name := name of the view,
policy_name := ploicy name,
function_schema := func schema name,
policy_function := pkg_test.fn_get_where,
statement_types := 'UPDATE',
update_check := TRUE,
policy_type := dbms_rls.dynamic);
3) function pkg_test.fn_get_where, which is used in the policy function always return 1 = 2, so that update should fail.
4) Now I will issue an update statement on the view test_view_name
update test_view_name set test_col = 1;
but still it updates the records, though update policy returns the where cluse 1 = 2
same where clause for select policy works perfectly fine.

We have a critical application batch that runs daily and had a 7.5 hr window after which the application needs to come online. During the peak batch times the truncates are running very slow leading to slow down of the batch jobs quite considerably due to which the batch is going beyond the window.
Technical details:
Database version: 11.2.0.2
OS: HP-UX 11.31
The wait events that show up when the truncates are running are local write wait
enq: RO fast object reuse
enq: CR block range reuse ckpt
db file parallel write
The ASH reports show that the top sessions are those executing DMLs(insert, merge, update) and DDLs(Create/alter index & truncate). In addition to this it also shows that the blocking sessions are background wait events: CKPT and DBWR. Changes to DB configuration done with respect to addressing these issues are:
1) We have increased the DBWR processes to 2
2) Reduced the buffer cache size to 20G(from the original 30G)
3) Flushing the buffer cache before the batch begins in order to reduce the load on DBWR during the batch peak time
4) Set the parameter filessytem_io to SETALL(from none)
5) Tuned the EVA(SAN storage) to improve its performance - by distributing the loads evenly between the controllers, reducing the IO transfer block size, etc
6) Suggested using the reuse storage clause to improve truncate performance.
All of these have worked bring a semblance of control but the fact remains that the batch is generating more jobs(hence increasing data volume) over time due to it being the peak season. This causes an inevitable increase in the number of sessions all running DMLs and DDLs which are IO intensive operations.
Suggestions pending from our end:
1) Increase DBWR beyond 2. For this we need a H/W upgrade since we have maxed out the maximum number of DBWR that can be configured
2) Implementing asynchronous IO for DBWR which on HP-UX requires moving to raw disks. Hence have suggested using ASM.
3) Tuning the application to either reduce the IO generated or redistribute the jobs such that those with maximum loads don't run together
instead of truncating tables, can we rename the tables and delete them later . will this improve performance ?

I have the following query. The problem is that in case of dense_rank it gives wrong result when there is multi sort involved,So lets say if following data i get from inner query before applying dense_rank
Seq_uid Status Salary Pre_sort_col
1 A 4 A
1 A 3 A
2 B 5 B
3 A 0 A
After dense_rank when ordering by pre_sort_col desc and seq_uid desc the result set is
Seq_uid Status Salary ROW_NUM pre_sort_col
3 A 0 1 A
1 A 4 3 A
1 A 3 3 A
2 B 5 2 B
which is wrong as seq_uid 3 shld nt come first. I cant have salary in dense rank as these are dynamic columns,if on 3 columns multi sort is selected,the first column will come in pre_sort_col, SEq_uid has to be used as to distinguish from other records which get same pre_sort_col
SELECT c.ROW_NUM, c.RECORD_TOTAL, VW.*
FROM (SELECT distinct seq_uid,ROW_NUM,RECORD_TOTAL
FROM (SELECT dense_rank(order by pre_sort_col desc,seq_uid desc)row_num,a.*
FROM (SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT V1.seq_uid) OVER() RECORD_TOTAL,

My requirement is to define a group of people to be assigned to one group/role, so that every change to that role can be automatically be applied to each user in that group

I have got a form in tabular format. each record contains some specific colour or it may not contain.
i want to chage the backgroud colour of that record based on what so ever user wants. for example, user want first record should be of RED back groud, second green, third blue etc.
colours are available in RGB format.
when i try to set_item_property(backgroundcolor) on post-query or on when new item instance, it makes all record of same colour.
note:- if a put another text/display item and make it number of record displayed property = 1 , then it works, because only one record colour is seen at a time.
I can not use multiple visual attributes because number of colours are up to user feedback.
how can it be applied in tabular format?

We are trying eliminate/minimize the downtime for our application. As part of new code deployments sometimes we need to modify DB Structure also. As it is taking time to backup current DB and apply new DDL, the application is down.
Is there a way to eliminate the downtime, if I can leverage Data Guard, Golden Gate or RAC concepts?

We have a 11r2 primary and standby running on RHEL 5. The primary lost network connectivity for a time and VMWare locked up. The VM admin restarted the primary VM (it was a hard-boot). This all happened while I was gone and when I came into work, the primary database appeared to be working. I decided to dig deeper and check out the standby. On the standby...

It appears all is well (just very far behind) but when I run the last code block (show database prodDB2;) again ...

Transport Lag: 2 days 1 hour(s) 42 minutes 37 seconds
Apply Lag: 2 days 1 hour(s) 42 minutes 37 seconds

it looks as if the massive backlog is just increasing. How can I confirm that everything that things are going well? I am still learning Data Guard.
