Partitioning - Switch Partition Key On Existing Table?

Jan 23, 2011

I recently started working with legacy code and noticed that some huge tables (5 years worth of data, don't have more details on me right now but can post later if needed) are partitioned based on time sequence number column while majority of queries are done based on time (different column). Queries performance is degrading and I'd like to try to modify partitioning and run some tests to evaluate performance improvement.

My only concern is with so much live data I have to come up with solution on how to switch partitioning with the least impact on applications running 24 x 7. Something you have done in the same situation and it worked?

Reports & Discoverer :: Value In Table Column Based On Some Existing Column Value Automatically Without User Intervention

May 15, 2011

i have two questions.

(1) how can i fill some value in a table column based on some existing column value automatically without user intervention. my actual problem is i have 'expiry date' column and 'status'. the 'status' column should get filled automatically based on the current system date. ex: if expiry date is '25-Apr-2011' and current date is '14-May-2011', then status should be filled as 'EXPIRED'

(2)hOw can i build 'select' query in a report (report 6i) so that it will show me list of items 'EXPIRED' or 'NOT EXPIRED' or both expired and not expired separately in a single report based on user choice. 'EXPIRED' & 'NOT EXPIRED' can be taken from the above question no. 1.

SQL & PL/SQL :: Performance Of Varchar2 Fields Based On Width?

Nov 10, 2010

I did a search on this topic and did see the ASK TOM response that storing all varchar2 fields as (2000) or what not is a bad idea based on an array fetch that developers may use etc. However I'm not sure that applies to my specific question, and the other examples he gave certainly didn't apply. So I'll pose the question a different way:

Question #1: Is there, for example, a performance difference between setting a field as varchar(2000) and varchar(25) if I was just running a native SQL query using a front end tool like TOAD?

Question #2: If I also need to index that field, will it take longer to index a varchar(2000) field than a varchar(25) field, assuming the same data is in both fields?

Forms :: Update Field Based On Another Field Checkbox

May 3, 2013

I have a table where i need to update one field values based on another field of the same table , simply as it is.I have done this using one select all check box , on clicking that all check boxes of item_trans table will get selected , then i will un select some of check box and then using one button, i will update the value of the fields which are checked only.

I have put the sample code but when i am updating its taking long time and hanging.I am also attaching the form based on the test case provided.

--tables with insert statement
create table item_trans (trans_item varchar2(12),trans_qty number,trans_act_qty number)

insert into item_trans(TRANS_ITEM,TRANS_QTY,TRANS_ACT_QTY) VALUES ('TREE1',40,NULL);
insert into item_trans(TRANS_ITEM,TRANS_QTY,TRANS_ACT_QTY) VALUES ('TREE2',20,NULL);
insert into item_trans(TRANS_ITEM,TRANS_QTY,TRANS_ACT_QTY) VALUES ('TREE3',20,NULL);

--i want to set the value of trans_Act_qty as trans_qty

--i create one dummy or test block to keep the select all check box. for that table test script is

CREATE TABLE TEST
(
C VARCHAR2(2000 BYTE),
B NUMBER,
A NUMBER
);

insert into test (C,B,A) values ('A',1,1);

--code written in select all check box which is created on test.block.

BEGIN
GO_BLOCK('item_trans');
FIRST_RECORD;
LOOP
:M_END_YN := :M_END_ALL;
[code].......

--code written in M_END_YN ( actual check boxes where i will uncheck).

IF :M_END_YN = 'N' THEN
:M_END_ALL := 'N';
END IF;

--code written on button to update those values which are checked.

BEGIN
GO_BLOCK('item_trans');

Windows :: Arabic Text Saved Using Odp In Varchar2 Field Becomes ????

we have 2 databases with AR8MSWIN1256 characterset (arabic). our client machine has English windows installed. our .NET application, which runs on the client machine, using ODAC and it reads and writes from one db to another db. We have no problems with nvarchar fields containing arabic, but with varchar fields it seems that it reads the data just fine - we can see it in GUI.but when it writes the data to the second db, arabic becomes question marks. We tried to set client NLS_LANG in registry to AR8MSWIN1256 and to WE8MSWIN1252. It doesnt work.

Can Partition A Table Based On Date If It Does Not Have A Date Column

How can we partition a table based on date if it does not have a date column.

Actually I have to compare two tables on daily basis and fetch few rows from those two tables and enter it to a third table.But both these tables does not have a date column.

I am confused if i need to alter those tables and add date column or if there is some way in which i can compare the data from the two tables for that particular day only and not the whole table data.

Server Administration :: Create Subpartition For Existing List Partition

Dec 14, 2012

We have a table which is already partitioned by list and now we would like to add a subpartition.

Create table Item_mst
(
ccn varchar2(10),
Flag varchar2(1),
Item varchar2(10),
status varchar2(1)
)

[Code]..

Now I could like to alter the above table for adding a new subpartition on each partition on status.

ALTER TABLE Item_mst
MODIFY PARTITION Item_mst_Test
ADD SUBPARTITION Item_mst_Test_A VALUES ('A');

Above alter gives ORA-14253: table is not partitioned by composite range method.

However dropping and recreating the table with subpartitions is working fine.

But Dropping and recreating the table in production is very cumbersome as it has huge data and many indices.
