Primary Key Does Not Treat NULL Value - Can Create Statement?
Feb 21, 2012
Create table X(
var1 varchar2(20) null,
var2 varchar2(20) not null,
constraint pk_var1 primary key(var1)
We all know Primary key doesnt treat NULL as a value. But the above statement is fine to be executed without problem.
Is this something to be highlighted? or am i not right in understanding 'var1 varchar2(20) null '?

I wanted to print 'null' when the column value is null. Actually, i am doing something like this
select empno||','||''''||ename||'''''||','||comm||','||sal from emp
It gives the following output for example
7369,'pointers',,200
If I use the above values to form a insert statement it throws
an error. As 'comm' value is not there.
I wish to get something like
7369,'pointers','',200
or
7369,'pointers',null,200
from the above select query
note I dint copy paste the query exactly from my sql*plus session as I am away from my oracle machine

select specialty,
member_id,
sp_id,
service_date,
sum(case when method_type = 'C' then (payment_total) end) "CONSULTATION",

sum(case when method_type = 'D' then (payment_total) end) "TESTS",

i am trying to analyze a query i have and noticed that it does not show the sql_id in v$session.
preparing a test case:
create table t1(a number, b varchar(10));
insert into t1 values(123 , 'value1');
when i execute
select count(*) from dual;
select * from dual;
select count(*) from t1;
i can see the sql_id by running
select
sql_id sql_id_,
sql_child_number sql_child_num,
module module_,
action action_,
logon_time lgtime,
[code]....
however, when i'm running
select * from t1
sql_id and sql_child_id in v$session appears to be null, and i can't analyze it.
why those columns are NULL?

A Master form in a tabular format. Id is a display item. I want to auto generate Id with following query.
select nvl(max(issue_id),0)+1 into :issue_mt.issue_id from issue_mt;
It works:
1)When each record is saved before creating new record.
It doesn't work:
2)If multiple records are entered with out saving each record.
What to do to generate unique Id in both cases?

I have a "EMP" table. the table already contains a duplicate data on "EMPNO" column. i want to restrict entering duplicate data further into table for that i want to create a trigger.

I'm trying to create a sequence for a primary key to simply auto-increment by the default of 1. I have a sql script written to generate mt tables, and I'm not sure how to modify the script to include the sequence. I also just want the sequence for a specific column, ie, PK, not the PK in all tables.
Here's a snippet from my script:
create table image
(
image_id int NOT NULL,
source_id int NOT NULL,
CONSTRAINT image_id_pk PRIMARY KEY (image_id),
CONSTRAINT fk_source_id FOREIGN KEY (source_id) REFERENCES source(source_id)
);
Would I add the create sequence statement right after the create table, and if so, how do I apply the sequence to only 1 table and a single column?

What is difference when you issue a create controlfile with "standby" keyword on the primary database
ALTER DATABASE CREATE STANDBY CONTROLFILE AS '/path/db_stby.ctl';
vs. creating a control using
ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE to '/path/db_control.ctl';
what does ORACLE put into the standby control that is "extra"? ie. what is the difference between a standby control file and a normal control file?

I'm trying to do is create 4 simple tables. This is my first project using SQL so I'm totally new to it, not just SQL itself but database design/management, including foreign/primary key concepts. I think that's why the errors are being generated due to a duplication of foreign key names (perhaps?) but I really don't where I'm going wrong with the design structure in terms of the FK's and the relationships.
Added the error report in the attachment.
Create Table Hotel
(Hotel_No Char(4 Byte) Not Null,
H_Name VarChar2(20 Byte) Not Null,
H_Address VarChar2(30 Byte),
Constraint Hotel_PK Primary Key (Hotel_No));
Create Table Room
(Room_No VarChar2(4) Not Null,
Hotel_No Char(4) Not Null,
R_Type Char(1),
R_Price Number(5,2),
Constraint Room_PK Primary Key (Room_No, Hotel_No),
Constraint Hotel_No_FK (Hotel_No) References Hotel(Hotel_No));
Create Table Booking
(Hotel_No Char(4) Not Null,
Guest_No Char(4) Not Null,
Date_From Date Not Null,
Date_To Date,
Room_No VarChar2(4),
Constraint Booking_PK Primary Key (Hotel_No, Guest_No, Date_From),

Constraint Hotel_No_Room_No_FK (Hotel_No, Room_No) References Room(Hotel_No, Room_No),

I am attempting to read from the maillog of our server, but I wish to make as few changes as possible for fear of blocking other systems access to the file.
I was initially going to call create directory maillogs as '/var/log/maillog' and then drop directory maillogs; when I was done but I found my user does not have "create any directory" permissions.
Rather than compromise security of the existing database configuration, I thought I would permanently add the maillogs to the list of available data directories. Are there any implications to the filesystem if I do this, or should I be able to add this without consideration of affects.
Understand that I will only be opening the file for (R) READ TEXT access only.
Primarily I am concerned that Oracle (in the background) will keep a file pointer open or something of that nature that would block other programs from writing to the file even after I close the file pointer. I want to make as little impact as possible to the file system.

I have the following create table statement:
create table SELECTION_BOOKMARK(
INSTALLATION_ID SMALLINT NOT NULL,
BOOKMARK_ID SMALLINT NOT NULL,
NAME VARCHAR2(50) NOT NULL,
SORT_ORDER SMALLINT NULL
);
When I execute this statement as part of a SQL script, it throws the error "ORA-01003: no statement parsed". If I execute it as a stand alone sql command, it returns no error.
Here's the strange thing, though. Even when it throws the error message the table is created. Later on in the script, I execute the following command:
alter table SELECTION_BOOKMARK add primary key(INSTALLATION_ID,BOOKMARK_ID);
This command also throws the above mentioned error, but once again the command executes - the primary key is created.Well, I don't like having a script that throws errors. Eventually I'll have to give this script to a dba in another organization and I don't want my script to be throwing errors - even if it's apparently working correctly despite the errors.

I am running a GROUP BY query on a few columns of enumerated data like:
select count(*), Condition, Size
group by Condition, Size;
COUNT(*) CONDITION SIZE
-------- ---------- --------
3 MINT L
2 FAIR L
4 FAIR M
1 MINT S
Well, let's say I also have a timestamp field in the database. I cannot run a group by with that involved because the time is recorded to the milisec and is unique for every record. Instead, I want to include this in my group by function based on whether or not it is NULL.
For example:
COUNT(*) CONDITION SIZE SOLDDATE
-------- ---------- -------- ----------
3 MINT L ISNULL
2 FAIR L NOTNULL
2 FAIR M NOTNULL
2 FAIR M ISNULL
1 MINT S ISNULL

create table test
(
id int ,
dat date
)
/
I want to implement a business rule such as we have for each id at most 1 dat null. So, I've created this unique index on test.
create unique index x_only_one_dat_cess_null on test(id, case when dat_cess is null then 'NULL' else to_char(dat_cess, 'dd/mm/yyyy') end);
insert into test values (1, sysdate);
insert into test values (1, sysdate - 1);
insert into test values (1, null);
insert into test values (1, null);
-- -----
insert into test values (2, sysdate);
insert into test values (2, sysdate - 1);
insert into test values (2, null);
The 4th insert will cause an error and this is what I wanted to implement. OK. Now the problem is that for non-null values of dat, we can't have data like this
iddat
------------
124/10/2013
123/10/2013
123/10/2013
1
because of the unique index (the 2nd and the 3rd row are equal). So just for learning purposes, how could we allow at most one null value of dat and allow duplicates for non-null values of dat.
