ORA-12154 Running 32 Bit Oracle Software 0n 64 Bit Windows?
Oct 7, 2011
There is an issue with the 32 bit Oracle client on 64 bit windows where it cannot connect to the database throwing the error ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified.
Since all the 32 applications will have the path C:\Program Files (x86) on 64 bit windows, The PATH variable doesnt recognise (). This issue was there in the previous versions of Oracle Client. But the bug has been fixed in Oracle 10.2.0.3 32 bit client.
Oracle Client: 10.2.0.3 32 bit
Windows OS: Windows server 2008 R2 64 bit
I have referred the below document from the metalink(which states that the bug is fixed in 10.2.0.3 client).

I have Oracle installed on a Windows 2008 server. When the database was created, it could not register with the listener (I confirmed that the listener service was running but when I started creating the database it stopped).I completed the db creation and started the listener again and tried "alter system register" but that didn't work either. Then I manually edited listener.ora and added an entry to the SID_LIST_LISTENER and I could successfully connect using sqlplus dba1@orcl/password from the same server.
Now, I tried to use the instant client to connect to the database from another Windows 2008 server. I copied the TNSNames.ora from the db server to this new server. When I run sqlplus dba1@orcl/password I get the ORA 12154 error.
Why would this happen from a remote machine which is on the same network? Ping from one server to the other works (both ways).

I have overwritten tnsnames.ora file with newone. In new tnsnames.ora file I have added new host string, remaining all unchanged.
after that, when trying to connect using sqlplus(from windows machine, sqlplusw.exe), working fine. But when trying to connect through putty getting error.
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name
for the same reason my scheduled cron tab can not run export backup. cron tab error is
EXP-00056: ORACLE error 12154 encountered
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name
EXP-00000: Export terminated unsuccessfully
I am suspecting problem may be due to file accessing permission related issue. But cant solve it. Current tnsnames.ora files permission is
# ls -l admin

We are planning to consolidate our Oracle Production DB into one server. We are basically a windows shop. Is it feasible to run 8 production Oracle DB in one windows server. All the DB are not really transaction intensive DB. 2 DB in the size of 300GB and others all DB falls under average size of 40GB.
I can take care of the HD slicing so Oracle does not enter into IO bottleneck. We are planning to go for external NAS or SAN for storage.
My main concern is on processor usage. The processor we are thinking about is Intel Xeon Quad Core x 2nos. Will there be a processor bottleneck or is there way in Oracle to assign processor usage(I belive there is no much tweaking options here)

We have a .NET application on windows server 2008 32bit using the stored procedures on an Oracle 10g environment. We are trying to deploy the .NET application onto a 64bit x86 Windows server 2008.
We face an error trying to install the x64 version of the Oracle 10g client on windows 2008. The error we get is Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: javaw.exe
Is the x64 version of the Oracle 10g client certified for Windows 2008? Has anyone successfully installed the 64bit version of the oracle client on win2008?
We have a workaround in place with 32 bit version of the client running with the 32 bit version of the .NET application on x64 win2008. However to maximize the infrastructure we need to use the 64 bit version or we would have to turn to MSSQL Server .

I have installed an Express edition of Oracle 11 database on one host (Windows 7) and want to access to from another host (Backtrack Linux based on Debian) from SQL*PLUS Instant client.
While I managed to resolve multiple issues with shared libraries, I am still not able to run the sqlplus command as Oracle. I get the following errors:
oracle@evil:~/instantclient$ sqlplus
SP2-1503: Unable to initialize Oracle call interface
SP2-0152: ORACLE may not be functioning properly
I followed the installation manual by Oracle and also created Oracle user with 2 env. variables set to:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/Oracle/instantclient/lib
ORACLE_HOME=/opt/Oracle
Note that I only installed SQPLUS client on Linux and there is no DB running. The version of sqlplus is 11.2.0.3.0
On different forums people advised to set other variables according to the DB installed but I have none. All I want is to run sqlplus with the IP address, SID, port and username. Is it feasible to have only SQL*PLUS client installed .

I have Oracle 11g R2 (11.2.0.1) with Oracle EM running on Solaris 10 with ZFS.When I start OEM it comes up and tells me that the listener is running but that the DB instance is down and agents are down.I know that the instance is up because I can start it manually.
Each time I start emctl, lsnrctl and DB manually everything starts running but OEM returns a failure for the DB. long as the display shows the DB not running OEM won't allow me to work in it.Instead of getting the login page I get the Database Control Page stating that "Enterprise Manager is not able to connect to the Database instance."I have tried the various emca -config dbcontrol db -repos drop and recreate but no luck.
Is there a way to uninstall/reinstall without dropping the DB?Are there control/configuration files I may hack to tell OEM the correct information?
