How To Get I / O Statistics On ASM Diskgroup
Jan 21, 2011
How can we check the I/O statistics on a ASM diskgroup?
Do we have any command which can be run @ sqlplus prompt after logging into the asm instance?
What steps can we take to increase the Read speed and the write speed on the ASM diskgroup.

The ASM Diskgroup DATA is dismounted automatically. I can mount the DATA Diskgroup again, but again is dismounted.
The RDBMS instance (XA21) is started along 5 minutes and then is shutdown, until I mount the diskgroup with problems, again
The Oracle version installed is 10g Standard Edition with ASM option, in Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition.
The alert log XA21 (RDBMS) instance, said:

My exadata quarter rack machine has two asm diskgroups, DATA1 with 5TB and RECO with 3TB. I'd like to resize RECO to 1TB and DATA1 to 7TB.
I know ALTER DISKGROUP RESIZE command, but my question is about resize RECO volume from 3 to 1 TB: is it supported by Oracle?? Let me know risks /issues with this resize?

A am new in RAC configuration.I configuring RAC with ASM diskgroup with the external redundency. So now i am facing problem to mount the ASM diskgroup. I am giving the the RAC configuration description below.
1. using two node rac1 and rac2
2. asm disk configuration 3 drive
/dev/raw/raw1
/dev/raw/raw2
/dev/raw/raw3
on both node
3. and i am using vmware to configure the both node asmdisk group
after configuring the os level and oracle clustring , i run dbca to configure asm disk group..so in the create disk screen i have found my previous create 3 disks
/dev/raw/raw1
/dev/raw/raw2
/dev/raw/raw3
so first two disks
/dev/raw/raw1
/dev/raw/raw2
i named it "dg1" then press ok , when i pressed ok a warring is appear that is "could not mount the diskgroup on remote node on rac2 using the connection service rac2:1521:+ASM2. Ensure that the listener is running on this node and the asm instance is registred to the listener. Receive the following error:
ORA-15032 : not all alterations performed
ORA-15063 : ASM discovered insufficient number of disk for diskgroup "DG1"
as the same way i create another diskgroup "fg" for flash recovery area using disk /dev/raw/raw3
so after creating the two diskgroup i saw the two diskgroup is appere in the "diskgroup appere screen" an saw that only one diskgroup is mounted but not second node i.e. rac2 diskgroup is not mounted . What should i do no .

Resize or add disk in ASM.
- The storage has partitions like:
- And now, the size of ASM disk was full
Because I've not ever done for adding disk to diskgroup.
Step 1- Format the storage, add partitions (I will create 4 partitions of 120gb, 1 partitions 60gb, 1 partitions 27gb).
Step 2- Add the rawdevice in /etc/sysconfig/rawdevices.In the picture here, I'll not just add rawdevice in /etc/sysconfig/rawdevices. So I'll do:
add lines in /etc/sysconfig/rawdevices
/dev/raw/raw7 /dev/cciss/c0d1p9
/dev/raw/raw8 /dev/cciss/c0d1p10
/dev/raw/raw9 /dev/cciss/c0d1p11
/dev/raw/raw10 /dev/cciss/c0d1p12
[code]....
how to do continue after step 5.

I've been ASM quite a while. I've two diskgroups extdg and nordg which are of external and normal redundancy respectively. Total diskgroup size is 9G, usuable space came down to 3mb when i tried to resize it to itz maximum. the value under usable column shows the same.
FYI... i've totally three disks in nordg, two in one failgroup and one in another.The disk sized equally 3g each.
Quote:
NAME TOTAL_MB FREE_MB USABLE_FILE_MB
------------------------------ ---------- ---------- --------------
EXTDG 2047 1995 1995
NORDG 9201 3073 3
The command i used to resize all disk to their max is Quote:SQL> alter diskgroup nordg resize all size 3067M;

I have an Oracle database 11.1.0.6 with ASM storage.
SQL> select * from v$version;
BANNER
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.1.0.6.0 - 64bit Production
PL/SQL Release 11.1.0.6.0 - Production
CORE 11.1.0.6.0 Production
TNS for Solaris: Version 11.1.0.6.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 11.1.0.6.0 - Production
There is a disk group named +FRA which has only 1 disk (call it disk 0 for later references).
+FRA disk group is in type of EXTERNAL redundancy
I'd like to add another disk to +FRA disk group and copy all files stored in disk 0 to the new disk (call it disk 1 for ex.), then take off disk 0 (not use for +FRA disk group any more).
Expected result: there is only one disk 1 left in the +FRA disk group, with all the data from disk 0 and keep their original file names

One of the Hitachi support guy has suggested to create a separate disk group for Online redo logs. His rationale was that ORLs was write only files and it would be better to put in a separate disk group.

I added a new disk to a diskgroup. It starts to rebalance. However, I plan to drop the diskgroup anyhow and recreate it since I want to restore a database to it.(I shouldn't have added the new disk beforehand, my mistake) So now it's rebalancing and may take some hours.Can I drop the diskgroup now?I think there is no way to stop the rebalance?

I've been using ASM for a few years now and have always installed a new system with 3 diskgroups
+DATA - for datafiles, control files, redo logs
+FRA - for achive logs, flash recovery. RMAN backup
Those I guess are the standards, but I've always created an extra (very small) diskgroup, called +ONLINE where I keep multiplexed copies of the redo logs and control files.
My reasoning behind this is that if there are any issues with the +DATA diskgroup, the redo logs and control files can still be accessed.
In the olden days (all those 5 years ago!), on local storage, this was important, but is it still important now? With all the striping and mirroring going on (both at ASM and RAID level), am I just being overtly paranoid? Does this additional +ONLINE diskgroup actually hamper performance? (with dual write overheads that are not necessary)

Is this dump will be useful for me to calculate production statistics?What option i have to use while importing statistics=recalculate or statistics=safe?

1) Why we need to do Compute Statistic on index.
2) Is it only for optimizer to make a better plan?
3) If yes, which means, optimizer will not able to collect statistic by itself?
4) if I'm not collect statistic, then optimizer will do it or skip.

am having Oracle 9i RAC on IBM AIX .
I have large partitioned tables ( 4 partitions are added every month ). Is is possible to collect Incremental Statistics Gathering on these objects ( 9i ). If I collect stats with Ggranularity => ALL and ESTIMATE_PERCENT =100 the stats are accurate but it takes so much time .
One way may be to collect stats as Ggranularity => PARTITION for each new partition ( this quite fast ). but what about the Global Table Stats?

In the article regarding gathering CBO Statistics, it states: QUOTE When an Oracle database is created, a job will be scheduled that will generate the database statistics for you. You will still need to collect system statistics however, as these are not collected by the automatic statistics gathering mechanism.
what is the difference between "database statistics" and "system statistics"? In other words, do I need to run this script for each schema owner in my 10g/11g instance?
variable whoami varchar2(20);
begin
select user into :whoami from dual;
end;
exec dbms_stats.gather_schema_stats( -
ownname => :whoami, -
options => 'GATHER AUTO', -
estimate_percent => 15, -
cascade => true).

I am using Oracle 11g R2 version.I want to import the DB statistics. But i am getting an exception when i execute the command DBMS_STATS.IMPORT_SCHEMA_STATS ('user1','STATS_INFO', '','', TRUE, FALSE).
The error is ORA-20000: no statistics are imported ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_STATS", line 10603 ORA-06512: at line 1.
The privileges 'ANALYZE ANY' and 'ANALYZE ANY DICTIONARY' is already given to the user.Also i executed this command as sys. But still error occurs.
Same command is successfully executed in Oracle 10g. Is there any difference in importing the statistics in Oracle 10g and 11g ?

how many rows certain tables have.
updating the statistics for a table (with GATER_TABLE_STATS) and using NUM_ROWS then. This works fine for me as long as I am the owner of the table, but when someone else is, I always get this error: ORA-20000: Table does not exist or insufficient privileges.what privileges do I need to use GATHER_ TABLE_ STATS on all Tables, which were created by Users?
when I tried to use ANALYZE TABLE TEST_TABLE COMPUTE STATISTICS on a certain table I got the following error: a view is not appropriate here. The strange thing is, TEST_TABLE is not a view (at least it is not listed in ALL_VIEWS and is listed in ALL_TABLES, so it cant be a view right?).
Besides, is there another way to gather Table Statistics (not using Analyze Table or Gather_Table_Stats)?

I need to do a cmd script for launching oracle statistics every week and scheduling it from task scheduler of my server with win 2008 R2 O.S.
the script is:
"statistiche-oracle.bat"
set ORACLE_SID=GW1
sqlplus "/ as sysdba" @statistiche.sql
and "statistiche.sql" is:
exec dbms_stats.gather_schema_stats(ownname => 'PDMUSER', cascade=>true)
exit
When I launch it from command line it stops with error message: "insufficient privileges" and ask me the user, so I put 'PDMUSER' that is my user, it asks also pwd, I put it and the works.

I have a table which have 300+ columns and have 13 million rows. It is on a 32 kb block size. This is a table in data ware house environment. There no# of rows in the table haven't changed much but I see that the time taken to collect statistics have increased significantly.Initially it took only 15 minutes (with the same 13M rows) now it runs for 4+ hours. The max parallel servers is 4 (which is unchanged). The table is not partitioned.
OS: HP UX Itanium
Database: Oracle 11g (11.2.0.2)
Command is:
exec dbms_stats.gather_table_stats(ownname=>'ABC',tabname=>'ABC_LOAD',estimate_percent=>dbms_stats.auto_sample_size,cascade=>TRUE,DEGREE=>dbms_stats.auto_degree);
I would like to understand:
1) What could have been the causes of this change in time. 15 minutes to 4+hours ?
2) How can we gather statistics of huge table at a faster rate?

Is it possible to gather stats for a schema which its in use. When i try to analyze the tables of a schema it shows that the statistics for that table is locked. So is it possible that instead of analyzing a table one by one , can i go for gathering the Schema stats while the objects of that Schema is still in use ( like DML or select statements being issued on those schema objects) .

i am using 10.2.0.1.0 version of oracle.
I have gathered frequency histogram manually on one of my column of a table to provide more information to optimizer for better calculation of cardinality.
Now i have my weekend job runs for gathering stats on schema level with method_opt as 'For all column size repeat'. But i don't want the stats of above column to be overridden by the stats job. I don't want to lock the statistics of whole table, but i just want to lock the column level stats for this table.
