Nov 12, 2012I tried to convert a physical SuseLinux with Oracle 9i Machine into an virtual Machine (esxi Server 5.0). (VMware vCenter Converter ) Before started I shutdown database:
su – oracle
sqlplus ‘/ as sysdba’
shutdown
and the run converter.
But i have problem with copy /u01 and /u02 (database files) "Error: Unable to clone the volume mounted on '/u01' "
So i want clone machine without /u01 and /u02 then copy file. What I should do to be correctly?

Mar 9, 2011My management is asking me to find the best way to migrate our 3.3 TB data warehouse to a new server. I currently use RMAN to back up the database. This is done offline on Sundays, and it takes about 9 hours, compressed backups to disk. Archived log backups are done online, not in conjuction with the db backup.
I have read a number of documents detailing step to use OEM Db Control (aka dbconsole) to clone the database to the new server.
I have a few questions:
1. I need to clone the Oracle SW first, as our current install has patches, so it should take less time.
2. Do you think just restoring from the last RMAN backup and doing recovery would be faster than cloning?
3. On the new server, I have assumed that the root user (not me) would have to pre-create the OFA structure, e.g.; we have some mount points like /f01/oracle/DBNAME or /g01/oracle/DBNAME. I cannot imagine that the Db control Gui or Rman could create that structure on the target server. Is that correct?
4. There seems to be an attitude in my shop that the storage array mount points and OFA would not have to be identical on the target server. Any opinions?
Back in 1995, I successfully manually cloned a database to a new server in an HP environment, but it was only about 70G!!

May 12, 2011I am looking to create a DDL-only clone of a 2TB database. The purpose of this clone is to provide developers a preprod-like environment where they can test the syntax of their code changes before deploying to production. The database will reside on a seperate, small server.
As I only need the structure of the objects and not the data, my first port of call was EXP using rows=n. However, when I IMP to an indexfile I see that the initial extents have been defined on the tables (in some cases 1GB!). As stated my clone environment is small, so I would be looking to have these set at 1mb. how I can achieve this? I will want to be able to automate the cloning of the database as much as possible. Perhaps there's some other way other than EXP/IMP?
Backup & Recovery :: Standby Clone Failure?
Mar 26, 2012I have run a standby clone that terminated with error due to few missing LV-s. I removed all LV-s for the clone, recreated them including the missing ones. I ran the clone again,but it skips the files that were successfuly duplicated in the previous clone request that failed. I need to be able to start the clone all over again, but RMAN does persistantly skip duplicating the datafiles that were successfuly processed in the first atempt.
How to ignore the RESUME option so that the clone process would start from the beginning? Where does RMAN keep the info about the successfuly duplicated datafiles in clone standby process? I have tried few RMAN tables , but no luck.

Jul 25, 2012I tried to clone a 2 node rac database to single instance non rac database using existing backup. I have not used connectivity to target or catalog. rman duplicate finished with below messages:

And the database was in mount stage, and when i tried to open database it failed with below error:

My approach:
Install new database.
ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE.
shutdown database.
Place available dbf files in the location for new database, replacing existing files.
edit trace file to create new controlfile. Script is:

Why do I need to specify an option at the first place?As my redo is intact, it is not incomplete recovery and, I do not want to generate new incarnation of my database.Why oracle simply not opening my database?

On Database Server

Mar 15, 2011I am trying to clone a database on another server with different direcory structure. So that path on the source db server are /u04 whereas on on target db server it would be /u03.
Since this I am testing it on small database initially I have kept all datafiles, backup and archivelogs at /u04 and /u03 on the source and target db servers respectively Now I have copied the backups from source db server to target and since path is changed, I cataloged it
However during restore I am getting

Aug 7, 2012I've read a lot about the different types of backup available with Oracle (hot and cold backup). However, I was thinking of a different way of performing this task. I'm currently using Windows Server 2008 R2 and Oracle 11g Standard Edition. I'd like to schedule an entire backup of my server via the utility "Windows Server Backup" (available for free).That way, I could recover my entire server with all the programs and files in case the latter crashes.I'm wondering if this solution could be used as a way of backing up (and recovering) the Oracle database. Should I still set up a regular hot backup with the Archivelog mode enabled in case some operations/transactions were being done at the time of the crash (for the data integrity)?

My Question is if we run the backups on DataGaurd Database, How would a RMAN DG database backup would clear the archive logs from Primary production and from DataGaurd Database during the backup process?
