Substitute Column Name From Variable For Select Query?
Jan 24, 2012
In a select query, I want to substitute the column name from a variable (In turn from an array of column names). Details are given below. I am getting an error as mentioned below.
Insert Into Test1 values(10,'Thomas','Manager','LA');
Insert Into Test1 values(11,'George','Chairman','LA');
declare
MTest1Test1%RowType;
str1VarChar2(1000):='Name';
MValue1Varchar2(100);
begin
Select * Into MTest1 from Test1 where ID=10;
str1:='Select MTest1.'||str1||' from dual';
execute immediate str1 into mvalue1;
dbms_output.put_line('mvalue1 '||mvalue1);
end;
/
I am getting the error:
ORA-00904: "MTEST1"."NAME": invalid identifier
ORA-06512: at line 9
In a select query, I want to substitute the column name from a variable (In turn from an array of column names). Details are given below. I am getting an error as mentioned below. sort it out?
Create table Test1(ID Number(10), Name varchar2(100), Description varchar2(1000), Site varchar2(100));
[Code]...
I am getting the error:
ORA-00904: "MTEST1"."NAME": invalid identifier
ORA-06512: at line 9
My objective is to get the name 'Thomas' in the variable - MValue1. I don't want to use the statement MValue1:=MTest1.Name because, moving forward, I want to have the column name to be dynamic, taken from an array of column names.
I need to achieve it by giving only one select query to get entire record and fetch the column values one by one, by substituting the column name from an array of column names, instead of writing that many lines of code / querying that may times to the database.
when I've tried to use substitute variables, they like to come up in 2's for the prompt. When I have the Set Verify option on, its even more disgusting.
2. Table with the values for columns as given in table 1 ex:
col1, col2, col3, col4, col5, a , aa , 1 , x1 , p b , ab , 2 , x2 , q c , ac , 3 , x3 , r
I have to select values from table2.col1 do some processing and calculate values and store it in a table then do the same thing with col2 and so. This needs to be done for all the columns that appear in table1.For example in table 1 i have only three columns mentioned thus i have to process col1, col2 and col3 from table2. col4 and col5 will not be processed since they do not appear in the first table.
The problem is i have hundred columns in table 2 and the user can add up to hundred columns in table 1 as and when it is required.
I have created a cursor to first select column name from table 1 where variable is not null.For each value in cursor i put it in a local variable.
Second step is to select values from table2 where instead of column name i am using the local variable.But the problem is instead of choosing values from col1 the query returns the value as col1 (the value of local variable)
is it possible to use the records returned by a query as column names in a select query.
select (select column_name from dba_tab_cols where table_name='V_$DATABASE' and column_name like '%CONTROL%') from v$database; * ERROR at line 1: ORA-01427: single-row subquery returns more than one row
I'm trying to write a simple query so I can do some testing on my application. I am trying to do something like this:
SELECT Location, LEVEL,
FROM S_ORG_EXT
where Location = 'North America' and LEVEL ='Software' OR location = 'North America' and Active = 'N'
in the where statement, I have put in the 'Active' that isn't a column. I want to be able to be able to change that in the select part. But I am not able to do so.
this is what I have tried: SELECT Location, LEVEL, Active = 'N' --I want to change this in the to N or Y so I can get different results.
FROM S_ORG_EXT
where Location = 'North America' and LEVEL ='Software' OR location = 'North America' and Active = 'N'
I'm new to XML to Oracle data integration. I do have clob column that has the XML data and trying to bring it into the Oracle relational tables, as a part of it we are developing PL/SQL procedure that calls this CLOB column, I want to know if we can variablize the data types ( Just like tablename. column name%type) in the select of the XML data:
I do define the data types after every column name , the problem is incase there is change in datatype I do need to manually edit the procedure to change the datatype is there a way I can variablize them something like tablename.columname%type.
I'm trying to return the number of records in my link table that contains the excursion_id I pass in by counting them. It doesn't seem to like the select count(*) into my output variable.
create or replace PROCEDURE BOOK_PASSENGER( EXCURSION_ID IN excursion_booking.excursion_id%TYPE, PASSENGER_ID IN excursion_booking.passenger_id%TYPE, NUMBER_BOOKED OUT NUMBER) AS BEGIN INSERT INTO EXCURSION_BOOKING VALUES(EXCURSION_ID, PASSENGER_ID, NULL); SELECT COUNT(*) INTO NUMBER_BOOKED FROM EXCURSION_BOOKING WHERE EXCURSION_ID = EXCURSION_ID; END BOOK_PASSENGER;
the moment my 11g database is connecting to a php web front end. this following procedure is the one I'm having trouble with.
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE "BSISSONS"."CREATE_EXCURSION" ( min_places IN excursion.min_places%TYPE, max_places IN excursion.max_places%TYPE, additional_charge IN excursion.additional_charge%TYPE,
[code]...
I can select into an output variable to return the value of the primary key of the newly inserted row back into the webpage, but i need to be able to 'select into' a temp variable to insert this value into another table on the same procedure. I get complie errors when i try to 'DECLARE' a variable after the 'AS' keyword
I have a problem that i have hard coded the username.tablename in each select statement of all forms of my application. Now i want to use a dynamic variable in place of username in each select statement throughout the application. The example is:
select * from scott.emp and i want to write it as: select * from variable.emp
But at compilation of the form the compiler should know the above variable name.
I have tried to use following select statement but it does not work.
select user into :global.username from user_users
I think perhaps my problem would be solved with Dynamic SQL Statement but i have no experience by using this statement.
All I want to do is run a procedure (DO_H_RUN) that returns a number into "v1" and then use that variable to return the result sets in three selects. This is all in TOAD. If I do not have a where clause, the code executes fine (allowing me to see the data in multiple Grid tabs)! But, I want to filter the rows.
I've tried doing a number of different things (finding all sorts of stuff on the Web) like declaring cursor variables and the like but after spinning on this for a couple of hours, I'm stuck.
Here's my attempt (the names have been changed to protect the innocent!):
declare v1 Numeric; BEGIN DO_H_RUN('Me', v1); --DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(v1); --This line works okay! select * from h_run where h_run_id=v1; --NO GO
I studied a document about lexical parameter in that it says "Lexical parameters are used to substitute multiple values at run time and are identified by a preceding '&'. Lexical s can consist of as little a one line where clause to an entire select statement"
Select * from emp, deptno &where.
and i know about substitution variables using & is this are same (lexical and substitution) or different.
I have to use bind variable for dynamic sql in a procedure. Is there a way to have control on these values. Say for example:
Procedur MyProc ( In_EmpID Number default null, In_EmpName Varchar2 default null, in_JoinDate Date default null [code]....
I have more than 5 In parameters, all 5 is not compulsory by default they are null and sql formation is also dynamic with in the procedure.I need to map bind variable to a proper one.. Is there a way to handle bind variable.
How can i convert data in NCLOB column to BLOB variable? NCLOB now is tored in UTF16. The data character set is ISO8859P2. Need to keep BLOB at unicode.
Is there a technique to getting a Top-N query to work as a sub-select in a larger query -or- is there another way to generate Top-N like results that works as a sub-select?
Background:
We have a large query that is being used to build an export from a legacy HR system to a new one. Amount the data needed in the export is the employees primary phone number.
The legacy HR system allows multiple phone numbers to be stored in a simple table structure:
SELECT emp_id, phone_type, phone_number FROM employee_phones
The new HR system does allow for multiple phone numbers, however they need a primary phone number identified and stored with the employee master information. (Subsequent phone numbers get stored in alternate table.)
From a business perspective, we have decided that if they have a HOME phone in the legacy system that should be the primary in the new system, if no HOME phone, then WORK, if no WORK then CELL.
That can be represented as:
SELECT * FROM employee_people_phones WHERE emp_id = '46021' ORDER BY decode(phone_type, 'HOME', 'a', 'WORK', 'b', 'CELL', 'c', 'z')
SELECT * FROM (SELECT * FROM employee_people_phones WHERE emp_id = '46021' ORDER BY decode(phone_type, 'HOME', 'a', 'WORK', 'b', 'CELL', 'c', 'z')) results WHERE ROWNUM = 1
SELECT phone_number FROM (SELECT phone_number FROM employee_people_phones WHERE emp_id = '46021' ORDER BY decode(phone_type, 'HOME', 'a', 'WORK', 'b', 'CELL', 'c', 'z')) results WHERE ROWNUM = 1
phone_number ------------------- 1111111111
However, when the Top-N query is added as a sub-select in a larger query using the employee id from the larger query (WHERE emp_id = export.emp_id), it fails saying that export.emp_id is not a valid id.
(SELECT phone_number FROM (SELECT phone_number FROM employee_people_phones WHERE emp_id = export.emp_id ORDER BY decode(phone_type, 'HOME', 'a', 'WORK', 'b', 'CELL', 'c', 'z')) results WHERE ROWNUM = 1)
1.Any way around this? Is it possible to put a Top-N (with a WHERE clause using data from the main query) in a sub-select?
2.Any alternatives (other than Top-N) to delivering a ROWNUM=1 result with a custom ORDER BY statement?
Other Notes: Yes, we know we could do two queries in the data conversion first deliver the bulk data to the target table, and then update with the phone numbers. However, for multiple reasons, that is less than desirable.
I am unable to insert the result set of query into corresponding SQL Table type variable where as same functionality can be accomplished by PL/SQL table type variable. Can't we access the same by using SQL type variable?
Ex:
Step 1:
SQL Object type , Table type Objects creation : drop type sql_emp_tab_type ; drop type sql_emp_type ; create or replace type sql_emp_type as object ( empno number, ename varchar2(20),
[code]...
Step 2: Accessing the table type object from PL/SQL block
1) i have a hr.departments table that was loaded in hr schema on 1st oct 2012 with 4 columns(department_id, department_name, manager_id, location_id)
2) now I have a new schema by my name 'rahul' and I have loaded departments table but now an additional column has come into picture,ie created_date, this table got loaded on 1st-Nov-2012
3) Now going forward my columns could be dropped from the departments table (it can be a case), for example might be my departments table in my schema 'rahul' one day could comprise of only 3 columns(department_id,department_name,manager_id)
4) Now in the next step, I have managed to extract common column names(in a single line where columns are delimited using a comma) from both the tables(hr.departments and rahul.departments) which are (department_id, department_name, manager_id, location_id) using all_tab_cols table and I have written a function for it which i will be pasting below.
5) now going forward, using the above column names line with column names delimited using comma, I have used a ref cursor and assigned a query to it using the line of columns that I have extracted from the above point
6) Now I want to create a record variable which refers to my ref cursor, something like we do when we create a record variable by reffering to an explicit cursor defination that we give in the declaration block.
PS:
1) I have been out of touch with plsql for a long time so I have lost a lot of mmeory regarding plsql.
2) basically I need to compare data in hr.departments table with rahul.departments table for only columns that are common to both the tables, rest new or discarded columns information will go in one of the log tables that I have created(this is done already)
Code : =================================================================================================== create or replace procedure p_compare_data(fp_old_table_name in varchar2, fp_new_table_name in varchar2) is
I'm trying to do a pivot query in oracle to get the years from a column and make a separate column for each. I found an example of the code to use on the internet and i changed it for my own tables but i'm getting errors. Namely a "FROM keyword not where expected" error at the beginning of the 'avg(...' statements.
I have copied the code used in
select stud_id, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 from ( select stud_id, avg(case when year=2006 then ((present/poss)*100) else null end) 2006, avg(case when year=2007 then ((present/poss)*100) else null end) 2007, avg(case when year=2008 then ((present/poss)*100) else null end) 2008, avg(case when year=2009 then ((present/poss)*100) else null end) 2009 from attendance.vw_all_attendance_perc group by stud_id );
