Create Dimension - Functional Dependency Between Levels

Sep 28, 2010

the literature equates dimension hierarchies with fuctional dependencies between the levels. I like to tst the strength of this assumption with the implementation of 'CREATE DIMENSION' which allows you to create roll-up hierarchies.

My question to put it simply is this: Given:

CREATE DIMENSION location_dim
LEVEL location IS (location.loc_id)
LEVEL city IS (location.city)
LEVEL state IS (location.state)
HIERARCHY geog_rollup (
location CHILD OF
city CHILD OF
state CHILD
)

Can I insert the following rows into the dimension:
loc_id, city, state
1, Epping, NSW
2, Epping, VIC

Please note that the two Eppings are different cities.

Given the roll-up hierarchy City -> State, will it require that for every city there can be only one state in which case the FD between City and State cannot hold. Or, is it that the roll-up hierarchy defined here has nothing to do with FD.

The second part of the question is if the answer to the above question is that the roll-up is not the same as FD, then is the ATTRIBUTE clause meant to define the n:1 (functional dependency) instead?

Performance Tuning :: Create Small Functional Indexes For Special Cases In Very Large Tables

Apr 5, 2012

Create small functional indexes for special cases in very large tables.

When there is a column having one values in 99% records and another values that have to be search for, it is possible to create an index using null value. Index will be small and the rebuild fast.

Example

create index vh_tst_decode_ind_if1 on vh_tst_decode_ind
(decode(S,'I','I',null),style)

It is possible to do index more selective when the key is updated and there are many records to create more levels in b-tree.

create index vh_tst_decode_ind_if3 on vh_tst_decode_ind
(decode(S,'I','I',null),
decode(S,'I',style,null)
)

To access the record can by like:

SQL> select --+ index(vh_tst_decode_ind_if3)
2 style ,count(*)
3 from vh_tst_decode_ind
4 where
5 decode(S,'I','I',null)='I'
6 group by style
7 ;

[code]....

SQL & PL/SQL :: Interchange The Value Which Has Foreign Key Dependency

Mar 29, 2011

I need to interchange the value which has foreign key depednecy,

For ex: I have a table dept

deptno| dname|dseq|
10 | CS | 1
20 | SC | 2

and in emp table

eno | ename | deptno |
1 |Raj | 10 |
2 |Ram | 10 |
3 |Vip | 10 |
4 |Muk | 10 |
5 |Sn | 20 |
6 |Snj | 20 |
7 |Asj | 20 |

there is a forign key define :

ALTER TABLE emp ADD (
CONSTRAINT rop_fk
FOREIGN KEY (deptno)
REFERENCES dept (deptno));

Now I want to change the deptno from 10 to 20 and 20 to 10 in dept table . So the ouput will be like

deptno| dname|dseq|
20 | CS | 1
10 | SC | 2

when i am deleting that row I am getting error "ORA-02292: integrity constraint (ROP_FK) violated - child record found".IF i am trying to update i am getting unique key contractin failure.

(Even I cannot update the rest of the column values in dept table as it is also having foreign key dependency) i need to put a sql script in production so that it will interchange.

Remove Duplicates From Slowly Changing Dimension

Jun 6, 2013

I've got a slowly changing dimension table for products with some duplicate attributes -

UNIQUE_ID | DATE_FROM | DATE_TO | PRODUCT_ID | ATTRIBUTE_1 | ATTRIBUTE_2
1 01-JAN-13 02-JAN-13 423 MONKEY 5
2 03-JAN-13 04-JAN-13 423 MONKEY 5
3 05-JAN-13 08-JAN-13 423 MONKEY 4
4 09-JAN-13 10-JAN-13 423 SUPERMONKEY 4
5 01-JAN-13 08-JAN-13 378 BANANA 2
6 09-JAN-13 10-JAN-13 378 BANANA 3

The natural key should be PRODUCT_ID, ATTRIBUTE_1 and ATTRIBUTE_2. The table should therefore be recreated as follows:

UNIQUE_ID | DATE_FROM | DATE_TO | PRODUCT_ID | ATTRIBUTE_1 | ATTRIBUTE_2
1 01-JAN-13 04-JAN-13 423 MONKEY 5
2 05-JAN-13 08-JAN-13 423 MONKEY 4
3 09-JAN-13 10-JAN-13 423 SUPERMONKEY 4
4 01-JAN-13 08-JAN-13 378 BANANA 2
5 09-JAN-13 10-JAN-13 378 BANANA 3

SQL & PL/SQL :: Where Conditions That Have Dependency Don't Get Executed In Order

May 26, 2010

While there's numerous QAs about inserting an image into the DB using the Data Block, how does one remove an image? Obviously there's the "UPDATE ... SET X = EMPTY_BLOB();", however, that kills the Data Block/Form's flow, and it doesn't update.

I've tried a few things:

* :CONTROL.IMG1 := NULL; (bad bind variable)
* :CONTROL.IMG1 := EMPTY_BLOB(); (some other error, probably as above)

SQL & PL/SQL :: Creating DWMQY Dimension Using Analytic Workspace Manager

Nov 20, 2012

I am creating a "time aware" (DAY, WEEK, MONTH, QUARTER, and YEAR) dimension using Analytic Workspace Manager.

Let me give you some background. I'm coming from a traditional "Oracle Express" OLAP background where all our data is stored in cubes and these are defined, populated and operated on using OLAP DML, there is no SQL or traditional relational tables involved.

I now want to pull data from relational tables into some OLAP cubes and am using Analytic Workspace Manager to do this (maybe this is not the best way?)

Let me explain what I'm trying to achieve. In OLAP worksheet I can type the following DML commands:

DEFINE MY_DAY DIMENSION DAY
MAINTAIN MY_DAY ADD TODAY '01JAN2011'

What this will do is create a "day dimension" and will populate it with values for each and every day between 1st Jan 2011 and today. It will be fully "time aware" and thus you can use date functions such as DAYOF to limit the MY_DAY dimension to all the Fridays etc. Similarly if I define a "month dimension" there will be an automatic implicit relationship between these two dimensions, this relationship and time aware cleverness is built into Oracle.

However, a dimension defined using DML commands (and indeed all objects created using DML language) is not visible in Analytic Workspace Manager (as there is no metadata for them?) and for the life of me I cannot work out how to create such a dimension using AWM. If I create a "Time Dimension" then, as far as I can tell, this is not a proper time dimension but merely a text dimension and I, presume, I have to teach it time awareness.

I have no issues creating, and populating cubes from relational tables using Analytic Workspace Manager, the only issue I have is creating a "proper" time aware dimension.

Use Range-hash Partitioning Of A Large Dimension Table

Apr 12, 2013

At moment we use range-hash partitioning of a large dimension table (dimension model warehouse) table with 2 levels - range partitioned on columns only available at bottom level of hierarchy - date and issue_id.

Result is a partition with null value - assume would get a null partition in large fact table if was partitioned with reference to the large dimension.Large fact table similarly partitioned date range-hash local bitmap indexes

Suggested to use would get automatic partition-wise joins if used reference partitioningWould have thought would get that with range-hash on both dimension.

SQL & PL/SQL :: Debugging Stored Procedure / Populate Data Warehouse Dimension

Nov 20, 2011

The following code is a stored procedure I plan to use to populate a Data Warehouse dimension using data from two OLTP tables which already exist in my database. Notice that in my cursor select statement, I calculate an attribute using substr and instr, and I also assign a true or false value to a flag using a CASE statement.

CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE populate_product_dimension
AS
v_Count NUMBER := 0;
v_NumRecs NUMBER;
/*Declare a cursor on the following query which returns mulitple rows of data from product and price_hist tables*/

In my mind, Product_Code is declared correctly in the Cursor declaration Select statement.

PL/SQL :: Legacy Data Migration Project - Cyclic Dependency Records

Mar 1, 2013

It's been a while since I worked with SQL Plus . I am using Oracle 11g. We are working on a legacy data migration project. I have a table of records with circular dependency records. i am trying to identify the records. I have the foll. columns- Product,Source,target. I want o identify the records which form a loop. For e.g.

Source Target
A B
B C
C D
D A

Last record forms a loop-I need to identify these records. My query is below-

SELECT DISTINCT SOURCE,TARGET FROM RULESELIB WHERE CONNECT_BY_ISCYCLE=1 CONNECT BY NOCYCLE SOURCE=PRIOR TARGET;

I ran this query on 2 tables- one with 75000 records and the other with 25000 records. It works fine on the table with 75000 records completes within a minute but it does not complete on the other table. I can't seem to be able to figure out the issue with the query or is there something about the data that is causing this query to loop infinitely?

SQL & PL/SQL :: View Of Item Hierarchy By Eliminating NULL Levels

Aug 22, 2013

Here is the table structure I will be speaking of below:

SELECT lvl_1_id, lvl_1_dsc,
lvl_2_id, lvl_2_dsc,
lvl_3_id, lvl_3_dsc,
lvl_4_id, lvl_4_dsc,
lvl_5_id, lvl_5_dsc,
lvl_6_id, lvl_6_dsc,
lvl_7_id, lvl_7_dsc,
lvl_8_id, lvl_8_dsc
FROM item_hier_tbl;

I have a table that mimics an hierarchy of items (parent-child relationship). The top level (level 1) never has a NULL value, but it is possible for any of the lower values to have a NULL value. For example, levels 1, 2, 5, 7, & 8 may have values, but 3, 4, & 6 may all be NULL.

I need a View that can return the same data, but with out NULL values. The View would move the NOT NULL values up the levels, so there is consecutive data on each level starting at level. So using the example, the View would move value in 5 up to 3, 7 up to 4, and 8 up to 5. Then level 6 to 8 would have NULL.

I have done this already by creating a 2nd table and using a stored proc to copy the data over to the new table they I want it. But I was told a View or Materialized view "may" work, and perform quicker during the queries. I looked at the Oracle functions LAG and LEAD, but by definition they work by rows, I need to work by columns on the same row.

LAG (value_expression [,offset] [,default]) OVER ([query_partition_clause] order_by_clause)
LEAD (value_expression [,offset] [,default]) OVER ([query_partition_clause] order_by_clause)

Is what I am asking possible in a View or Materialized View?

Hibernate Optimistic Locking Versus Database Isolation Levels

Among Hibernate optimistic locking & Database Isolation levels, which one to use? Which gives the better consistency, concurrency and scalability. I read in couple of links that Isolation level will suffer if there is a huge load on the application with multiple users access the appliation at the same time, moreover in islation levels normally we need to look for READ_COMITTED and NON_REPEATABLE_READ to get a better performance? Whether these are true? Whether we can use both Hibernate optimistic locking(version & timestamp) & Database Isolation levels in the same application? What are the implications using these? Which one will be preferred over the other and when?

SQL & PL/SQL :: ORA-30556 - Functional Index Is Defined On Column To Be Modified

Feb 2, 2012

I'm altering a column length to increase the size and getting "ORA-30556: functional index is defined on the column to be modified".

On searching more about this error, it seems like the function index must be dropped before altering the column.The table I'm dealing with is huge.

Question 1:In case of dropping and recreating the index, should the following steps be done:

- Drop Index
- Alter the column to increase the size
- Recreate the index with NOLOGGING and NOPARALLEL clause
- ALTER INDEX to turn on LOGGING
- Gather Statistics on that index

Question 2:Is there anything else that should be done when the index is dropped and re-created?

Question 3:What are the side-effects of carrying out the above steps in a huge table with around 15 million rows?

Question 4:Would it work if I disable the index, alter the column and reenable the index?Do I have to rebuild the index and gather Stats upon reenabling it?
