Upgrade From Oracle 11.2.0.2 To 11.2.0.3 In A Test Environment

Aug 29, 2012

recently i have tried to upgrrade from oracle 11.2.0.2 to 11.2.0.3 in a test environment (virtual machine).

there i have mentioned the SID as ORCL, but when we took the same snapshot to other machine (VM). iam unable to connect to the VM, unless i gave the local net service configuration as ORCL but it is unable to connect. but when i ran the query "select * from GLOBAL_NAME" output was ORCL. domain. com again i have configured in LNSC as ORCL.DOMAIN.COM it is working.

but i have given the sid as ORCL..

RAC & Failsafe :: Test Environment - SAN Migration?

Feb 15, 2012

We have a RAC in a test environment. It's 2 nodes connecting to an IBM DS3512. The DS3512 has one pool of 8 hard disks (RAID10) which has been then sliced into logical drives:

2 x 1GB
then
2 * 400GB

I have been tasked with changing the current configuration as follow:

2 pools of 4HDs in a RAID10 configuration

Then from the first pool:
2 * 1GB
1 * 398GB

from 2nd pool:
1 * 400GB

What I intend to do:
1) shutdown
SQL> shutdown immediate;
./srvctl crs stop
2) backup
dd if=votingdisk of=voting_disk_backup
I already got backups of OCR in $CRS_HOME/cdata/crs/
3) Perform changes on SAN
4) recreate ocfs2 partitions
5) mount the disks to their folder.
6) recovery
recover voting from backup
recover ocr from backup
7) Turn service on again
./srvctl crs start
SQL> startup;

Would this scenario work. There can be some glitches like the disk names changing after the reconfiguration but I only need to modify fstab for that.

PL/SQL :: High Consistent Reads / Cannot Replicate In Test Environment

Feb 8, 2013

I am having performance issues on a query in a production environment that I cannot replicate in our test environment. Our test environment is an import of production. Version information is:

Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0 - 64bi
PL/SQL Release 10.2.0.3.0 - Production
CORE     10.2.0.3.0     Production
TNS for Solaris: Version 10.2.0.3.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 10.2.0.3.0 - ProductionWhen I run the query in test, I get the following results using TKPROF
[code]....

Misses in library cache during parse: 1
Optimizer mode: ALL_ROWSThis performance problem started a few weeks ago and the problem seems to be in the high number of consistent reads during fetch. The DBA tried restarting the instance and gathering fresh stats on the tables but that has not made a difference. Now he wants to export the tables, drop the schema and re-import.

RAC & Failsafe :: Downgrade 2 Node RAC 11.2.0.3 To Previous Version 11.2.0.2 On Test Environment

Aug 20, 2012

I wanted to downgrade our 2 node RAC 11.2.0.3 to previous version11.2.0.2 on our test environment, so i could prepare to upgrade production later.

I followed oracle documentation and issued

'/u01/app/11.2.0.3/grid/crs/install/rootcrs.pl -downgrade -oldcrshome /u01/app/11.2.0/grid -version 11.2.0.2.0'

and both nodes and manually removed file in upgraded oracle home (rm -r u01/app/11.2.0.3).

This seems to have caused havoc and ASM and srvctl are no working. lsinvemntory lsinventory still poitns to removed oracle 11.2.0.3

I tried to set

export ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_HOME
.oraenv
+ASM1
srvctl config ##n

srvctl config

I've found a manual [URL] by which I am trying to do it.I took backup sets from last night's backup using RMAN,and the current parameter(initSID.ora) file from the running live database. Now i need to configure control files in the pfile accordingly.

1. can i take current control files from the running system, to restore and recover backup sets from last night, to the state the database was at backup time?

2. how can i find out if control files are backed up and know by RMAN? "list backup completed after '2012-JUN-19';" >> gives me Archive redo logs, datafiles, but don't see the control files(or don't reconize them).

Upgrade :: Oracle 10g To 11g Upgrade

Feb 21, 2013

I am trying to come up with a plan for an upgrade that is needed for a server I maintain. It is a Windows 2003 32bit running Oracle 10.2.0.3 on old Hardware. It also has two obscure 3rd party applications that are running on it that directly access the database. These applications are supported by off site consultants.

My initial plan was to Create a Windows 2008 R2 Virtual Server and install the same version of Oracle 10.2.0.3. Using Rman clone the database to the new server. Have the consultants come in and get the applications working. Once everything in the new environment seems to be working fine, run RMAN again and reclone the database to have all the latest data. Then at a later time upgrade the database to 11g 32bit. Virtually no downtime and we could spend all the time we needed getting the applications working and testing the new environment.

The plan is dead right of the bat though because I realize 10.2.0.3 is not supported by Windows 2008 R2. I really did not want to add an Oracle DB upgrade into the mix at the same time. Just because their are so many changes from the old environment to the new that I want to break this down into manageable chunks. And I can maybe get by with 1 day of down time.

So now I am looking at installing 11g on my Virtual Server, Clone the database, upgrade the database, have the consultants come in and get the applications working. All the while we are down. If we run into any problems, which you always do, it just completely blows the schedule.

Test Instance With Oracle 11gR2 - EM Sending Email Notifications Too Late

Feb 18, 2013

On a test instance with Oracle 11gR2 with Enterprise Manager Database Control I try to activate the Email Notifications in Enterprise Manager, so that I can use them for monitoring.

So i configured following settings:

Under Setup -> Notification method I gave him a valid mail address with a vaild SMTP server. The test mail was send successfully.

Under Preferences -> General i gave SYS a valid mail address to receive. The execution plan i let in standard configuration, so every time at everyday i will get an email, when something happens. the test mail was send successfully too.

Now i created an own rule to test the configuration:

I went to Preferences -> Rules an add an rule. Name and description I named "test" and set "database instance". At availability I activated all checkboxed, so i should be informed when the instance goes down, comes up, getting an error, when the error is fixed, when agent is not available, when agent is available again, when there is a metric error, when the emetic error is fixed, when a blackout starts and when it ends.

Metrics, policies and jobs there wasn't defined anything in standard, so i let it so and set nothing here. I activate the checkbox for sending emails to sys and sending repeat emails every 15 minutes 3 times at all.

Now, to test this notification i logged into my testserver and killed the listener process, to see, what will happened. After 1 Hour waiting i didn't get any email, so i restarted the listener. after the listener was started my outlook was fluted by emails from the server, that the listener was down. But why i didn't get them earlier.

I checked the procedure with the database to, here i get it down by "shutdown abort" and "shutdown immediate". But i get the mails, that the database is down, when its up already. And thats to late!

When I want to use such email notifications for productive servers and someting is going wrong, for that a notifications is configured of course, I want to get the mail directly, when that happened and not, hen the problem is fixed!

For example, here an email from testing, where the listener was down, that i've get at 13:01 :

Target Name=LISTENER_<hostname>
Target Type=Listener
Host=<hostname>
Metric=Status
[code].........

Oracle Clustered Production Environment

May 26, 2013

I have a requirement to upgrade Oracle Data Integrator(ODI) from 10.1.3.5 to 11.1.1.6.3 We have a Clustered production environment where N1 will be up when N2 be down and viceversa.

Here N1 and N2 are the ODI servers as well as DB(11g Release 2) servers. They both access the SHARED CLUSTERED database. From ODI we will generally point the Oracle clustered IP(Virtual IP) which will internally point either N1 or N2 whichever is active. ODI application wise we are clear about the procedure.

Having some issues on DB related activities.

1. Should I break the cluster definitely? Cant I do the activity without breaking the cluster?
2. Do I need to point N1, N2, Clustered IP (Virtual IP) while doing the activities?
3. Since its a clustered database, do I need to db related activities once or twice? (Twice means, manually on both the servers)
4. As they are using same file structures (RAC), If the Virtual IP points N1 by default, assume that I create two new users a

Queueing :: How To Configure Oracle AQ For Distributed Environment

Sep 23, 2013

I have a scenario In which I have say 4 AQ in which I will post the message. Also i have say 2 database.I am planning to create an MDB which will poll on these AQ's,  so whenever I post message the MDB will read it and perform a specific action.I believe I can create only one MDB per queue, if it is so then I have to create 8 MDB.

As there 2 datasource and 4 MDB. Is there any other way to handle this I mean without creating 8 MDB as the Data sources can increase to 10 to 20 so the number of MDB will be 20 to 40.I guess this will affect the application performance. Can I make some changes in application so that only few MDB's are required?

Backup & Recovery :: Process Of Setting Up DR Environment For SAP And Oracle Database

Feb 7, 2012

We are in the process of setting up a DR environment for our SAP and Oracle databases . The netapp and our architects came up with solution as follows .

1.Standby databases are built for all production databases.
2.The SAP file systems are replicated to the secondary site
3.The Oracle logfiles and controlfiles are replicated by netapp snap mirror every 10 mins interval
4.The database is recovered through recover standby database every 15 mins at standby site
5.Please note there is no data guard involved .
6.To test the failover , the mirror is broken .The standby controlfile is replaced with Production controlfile and Redo logs files.
7.The standby database issued a startup comnmand and it worked .

Would like to know whether the step 6 is a correct approach ? I tried to convince the architects that this will result in a very disastrous situation for us but none is listened to .
