Server Administration :: How To Avoid Clear Password In Checkpoint File With Oracle DBCA

Nov 15, 2011

I found there is clear password in the xml file in the process of Oracle instance creating. The process like below

1, when using the following process to create the instance

Login as user Oracle
/home/Oracle11home/bin/dbca -createDatabase -silent -templateName /home/Oracle11home/assistants/dbca/templates/Small.dbt -gdbName testDB -sid testSID -sysPassword testpwd -systemPassword testpwd

2. Found the file in $ORACLE_HOME/checkpoints/dbca/OraDb11g_home2_oracle_creation_checkpoint.xml , it listed the sys and system passwd (like testpwd for sys and system password) directly.

<CHECKPOINT LEVEL="MAJOR" NAME="db_oracle" DESC="db creation checkpoint" STATE="FAIL">
<PROPERTY_LIST>
<PROPERTY NAME="command" TYPE="STRING" VAL=" -silent -createDatabase -templateName Small.dbt -gdbName testDB -sid testpwd -sysPassword testpwd -systemPassword testpwd"/>
</PROPERTY_LIST>
</CHECKPOINT>

I hope to confirm :

1. what is the purpose for oracle to genate the checkpoint.

2, can we remove the file safely ?

3, if there is configuration that we can avoid to show clear password in checkpoint file?

Server Administration :: Restore And Recover Database?

Oct 21, 2010

I create a test database which is duplicate of my production server and after every 15 or 20 days I need to synchronize test db with production db.So I clone it and it takes about a day.I have to remove all datafiles from test and move from production to there on test server and I applied restore and recover.So it is very time consuming process.

I want to know is there any process which makes my work less like I just need to apply all rest of the logs which are new after synchronize last time from production server that need restore and recover.

Restore Recent Backed Up Control File And Then Restore The Database?

May 6, 2013

The controlfiles were corrupted due to some issue. So, I had to restore the recent backed up control file and then restore the database.

The weird thing which I have noticed is that. I tried backing up Yesterday's Control file. So, I would say that the backup pieces it should pick should be from yesterday. however, the backup pieces are getting restored from last week's backup.

Server Administration :: Size Storing JPG File In Database

Feb 13, 2012

I am storing customer's snaps in a table ( column's data type as LONG RAW) using oracle forms Webutil. Now there are 250 snaps in the table. The file type of these snaps is JPG with the average size 30KB.

I made a backup using export utility before storing these snaps and the exported DMP file's size was 36MB. Now after storing these just 250 snaps of 30KB the DMP file's size is gone over 300MB.

i need to change column's datatype? or some where in oracle forms's image item. Because on window's file system the size of these files is just 8MB.

Server Administration :: ORA-01116 / Error In Opening Database File 26

Jul 9, 2010

I was surprised when I shutdown our production dB. I got this error:

$ . oraenv
ORACLE_SID = [abcd] ?
SQL> shutdown
ORA-01116: error in opening database file 26
ORA-01110: data file 26: '/VOL03/oradata/qxyz/data/qxyz_data01.dbf'
ORA-27041: unable to open file
SVR4 Error: 2: No such file or directory
Additional information: 3
SQL> shutdown abort
ORACLE instance shut down.

2 days ago i rename this file QXYZ_DATA01.dbf from it's original name of QXYZ01.dbf without knowing that I was in the 'abcd' instance. When I backup a controlfile I noticed that it was part of the 'abcd' data files, so I just delete it (from OS level).

Is there any risk involved in the 'abcd' instance? How do I get rid of that file 'qxyz_data01.dbf' in the 'abcd' instance.

Server Administration :: Upgrade From 11.1.0.6 To 11.2.0.2 Patchset On Linux X86-64 Version?

Oct 1, 2010

I am testing upgrade from 11.1.0.6 to 11.2.0.2 patchset on linux X86-64 version. And facing the following component related issue.

The following components cannot be upgraded as the corresponding upgrade scripts are missing:

OLAP Analytic Workspace ( /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_3/olap/admin/apsdbmig.sql )
OLAP Catalog ( /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_3/olap/admin/amddbmig.sql )
Spatial ( /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_3/md/admin/sdodbmig.sql )
Oracle OLAP API ( /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_3/olap/admin/xoqdbmig.sql )

If you want to upgrade these components, you must first install them, using the OUI, and then re-run the Upgrade Assistant. Do you want to continue with upgrade? Note: If you continue, the above components will not be considered as part of the upgrade process.*

Following is the status of the specified components from 11.1.0.6

COMP_ID COMP_NAME VERSION STATUS
AMD OLAP Catalog 11.1.0.6.0 VALID
SDO Spatial 11.1.0.6.0 VALID
APS OLAP Analytic Workspace 11.1.0.6.0 VALID

Should I install these components while installing 11.2.0.2 patchset prior upgrading? I was unable to find any component installation on OUI.

Also DBUA pre-upgrade asked to remove existing UltraSearch from 11.1.0.6 prior upgrading. Though I removed it, but not sure is that going to hamper the upgraded DB, as I'm not sure of the usage of this component as well.
