PL/SQL :: Prefix Variables Names With A Colon?

Jun 24, 2012

PROCEDURE calc_avg_sales
BEGIN
:sales.avg := :sales.month1 / :sales.total;
EXCEPTION WHEN ZERO_DIVIDE THEN
:sales_avg := 0;
RAISE FORM_TRIGGER_FAILURE;
WHEN OTHERS THEN NULL;
END;

Excerpt from Oracle PL/SQL Programming ISBN 0-596-00381-1 Pg. 106

Why are the variable :sales.avg, :sales.month1, and, :sales.total not declared in the above snippet? Is it presumed that they have been? Why is a : (colon) placed in front of the variables?

Why would you think that FORM_TRIGGER_FAILURE is raised rather than ZERO_DIVIDE?

Within my production environment I have noticed that error messages are sometimes vague to the user and for the technical user, and, would like to make use of an error table which would troubleshoot the cause of the error, without giving unnecessary details to the end user. Ideally this would include details of the Java Exceptions raised (usually large stacks) within applications that form part of the software architecture. How would you go about using an error handling mechanism?

Application Express :: Prefix Text Entered Into Text Area With Userid And Timestamp?

Sep 12, 2012

Have got basic form on a table and have a textarea which holds Notes added by user.

So Notes database field is updated on Save / Apply changes button being pressed. But would really like any text added / appended to the Notes field to be prefixed by userid and date / timestamp.

Is it possible via dynamic actions or Javascript to have any new text added / typed to be auto prefixed as per above.

Would only want the first key press in the filed to trigger the auto-prefix and if added text was deleted then the auto prefix to be deleted as well ?? If user doesn't press Save / Apply changes obviously want to leave existing Notes as is.

SQL & PL/SQL :: How To Combine Queries When WITH Clause Is Used

Jun 21, 2010

I have 4 select queries.

Query1
Query2
Query3
Query4

First Step:Combine Query1 and Query2,but the requirement is Query2 should only use the Acct_ID and Bill_ID which are output from Query1.

Second Step:Combine Query3 and Query4,but the requirement is Query4 should only use the Acct_ID and Bill_ID which are output from Query3.

Third Step: Is to now combine both the data set from First Step and Second Step.

In order to achieve my First and Second Steps I used WITH clause.

With S1 as ( Query1 ),
S2 as ( Query1 Union Query2)
Select S2.* from S1,S2
where S1.ACCT_ID=S2.ACCT_ID
AND S1.BILL_ID=S2.BILL_ID

With S3 as ( Query3 ),
S4 as ( Query3 Union Query4)
Select S2.* from S3,S4
where S3.ACCT_ID=S4.ACCT_ID
AND S3.BILL_ID=S4.BILL_ID

1. Is that approach right for achieving my First and Second step requirements ?

2. How to achieve Third Step ?

Aggregate Function - Combine Results

Nov 24, 2009

I have a query more or less like this:

SELECT field1,
COUNT(x) AS COUNT
FROM my_table
GROUP BY field1;

For field1 I want to get a count, but if field1 is like 'ABC%' then I want to combine all of those.

So if I have the following:
ABC1 | 5
ABC2 | 10
XYZ1 | 3

I want results like this:
ABC | 15
XYZ1 | 3

I've tried using some case statements like

SELECT CASE
WHEN field1 LIKE 'ABC%' THEN
'ABC'
ELSE
field1
END AS field1,
COUNT(x) AS COUNT
FROM my_table
GROUP BY CASE
WHEN field1 LIKE 'ABC%' THEN
'ABC'
ELSE
field1
END;

but this just gives me
ABC | 5
ABC | 10
XYZ1 | 3

How can I combine record 1 and 2 from the last record set example above?

Combine Tables With Union But Limit Number Of Records?

Sep 13, 2007

Updated to Add: In a last ditch search, I found my answer with ROWNUM <= 1 in the Where clause. It works and I can go from there with what I want to do.

I have a website that pulls similar information from multiple queries using a Union-based query. I want to only pull 1 record from one section, two from another, and 5 from the third. I've so far found LIMIT but haven't been able to get it to work in that way. Is it possible to limit each query in the union as I am looking to do?

The query is:

SELECTc.priority, c.startDate, p.headline, p.newsID, p.kicker, p.webPath, p.makePopup, p.thumbnail, p.shortDesc, p.storyType, d.filePath
FROM (so_news p LEFT OUTER JOIN so_news_deptLevel c ON p.newsID = c.newsID) LEFT OUTER JOIN so_departments d ON d.deptID = c.deptID
WHERE p.storyType = 'alert' AND c.display = 'yes' AND c.startDate <= sysDate AND c.endDate >= sysDate
UNION All
SELECTc.priority, c.startDate, p.headline, p.newsID, p.kicker, p.webPath, p.makePopup, p.thumbnail, p.shortDesc, p.storyType, d.filePath

Complex Case Expression - Combine Two Statements To Get Desired Bucket

May 19, 2011

WHEN DATEa> DATEb THEN NETWORKDAYS(DATEb, DATEa)
WHEN DATEa < DATEb THEN NETWORKDAYS(DATEa, DATEb)
WHEN STATUS='PENDING' THEN NULL
ELSE NULL
END) AS RESULTa,

Now what I need to be able to do is place those results in buckets, similar to this:

(CASE WHEN RESULTa < 0 THEN '<0'
WHEN RESULTa between -1 AND 6 THEN '<=5'
WHEN RESULTa >5 THEN '>5'
ELSE ''
END) AS BUCKETa

I understand that I can't call an alias from a previous case expresson to get these desired results and how I could combine the two statements to get the desired bucket.

Reports & Discoverer :: Excluding SQL Query Data When Linked With XML Query?

Apr 26, 2013

The data stored in the table and xml file sharing a key field, but the xml contents are less than what in the table.I want to show only the data shared between the two queries, how can I do that?

e.g.:

Table emp:

e_id | e_name | e_sal
023 | John | 6000
143 | Tom | 9000
876 | Chi | 4000

XML File

<e_id>

e_id | e_name | e_sal | e_fee
143 | Tom | 9000 | 300

SQL & PL/SQL :: Query Using DBLink Returns More Rows Than Direct Query?

Apr 6, 2010

I have a query that is pulling back more rows when I use the dblink than when I hit the linked database directly.

For example:

select

returns 788,324 rows

while
select
x,y,z

mytable

returns 712,102 rows

It's the exact same query, with the only difference being the dblink. It's not pulling the data into a cursor or array, it's a simple, straightforward query on a remote database.

Getting Top-N Query To Work As Sub-select In Larger Query?

Mar 10, 2012

Is there a technique to getting a Top-N query to work as a sub-select in a larger query -or- is there another way to generate Top-N like results that works as a sub-select?

Background:

We have a large query that is being used to build an export from a legacy HR system to a new one. Amount the data needed in the export is the employees primary phone number.

The legacy HR system allows multiple phone numbers to be stored in a simple table structure:

SELECT emp_id, phone_type, phone_number
FROM employee_phones

emp_idphone_typephone_number
------- --------------- -------------------
46021CELL2222222222
46021HOME1111111111
46021WORK3333333333

The new HR system does allow for multiple phone numbers, however they need a primary phone number identified and stored with the employee master information. (Subsequent phone numbers get stored in alternate table.)

From a business perspective, we have decided that if they have a HOME phone in the legacy system that should be the primary in the new system, if no HOME phone, then WORK, if no WORK then CELL.

That can be represented as:

SELECT *
FROM employee_people_phones
WHERE emp_id = '46021'
ORDER BY decode(phone_type, 'HOME', 'a', 'WORK', 'b', 'CELL', 'c', 'z')

emp_idphone_typephone_number
------- --------------- -------------------
46021HOME1111111111
46021WORK2222222222
46021CELL3333333333

Or similarly with Top N concept:

SELECT *
FROM (SELECT *
FROM employee_people_phones
WHERE emp_id = '46021'
ORDER BY decode(phone_type, 'HOME', 'a', 'WORK', 'b', 'CELL', 'c', 'z')) results
WHERE ROWNUM = 1

emp_idphone_typephone_number
------- --------------- -------------------
46021HOME1111111111

Or really what I want in my export:

SELECT phone_number
FROM (SELECT phone_number
FROM employee_people_phones
WHERE emp_id = '46021'
ORDER BY decode(phone_type, 'HOME', 'a', 'WORK', 'b', 'CELL', 'c', 'z')) results
WHERE ROWNUM = 1

phone_number
-------------------
1111111111

However, when the Top-N query is added as a sub-select in a larger query using the employee id from the larger query (WHERE emp_id = export.emp_id), it fails saying that export.emp_id is not a valid id.

(SELECT phone_number
FROM (SELECT phone_number
FROM employee_people_phones
WHERE emp_id = export.emp_id
ORDER BY decode(phone_type, 'HOME', 'a', 'WORK', 'b', 'CELL', 'c', 'z')) results
WHERE ROWNUM = 1)

1.Any way around this? Is it possible to put a Top-N (with a WHERE clause using data from the main query) in a sub-select?

2.Any alternatives (other than Top-N) to delivering a ROWNUM=1 result with a custom ORDER BY statement?

Other Notes: Yes, we know we could do two queries in the data conversion first deliver the bulk data to the target table, and then update with the phone numbers. However, for multiple reasons, that is less than desirable.
