This is my query
select to_char(exp_Date,'Mon-YYYY') dt, count(*) from exp_main
where exp_type like 'Income%Photo%'
group by to_char(exp_Date,'Mon-YYYY')
order by exp_date
When I run this I get :not a GROUP BY expression
If I remove the order by, it works fine.
Is there a way to order by since the output of the query is character-sorted.
I did search online most have suggested to use order by column_name. But does not work for me.

As we know that date datatype can store both date part and time part. If I specify the Date format for my database as 'DD-MM-YYYY HH@$:MI:SS' can i ensure i anyways for a particular columns in the database containing date values the format is 'DD-MM-YYYY' i.e without the time part.Can we specify seperate date formats for specific columsn in database during table creation?

I have a field (called Date_Time) which displays for example 1/31/2005 12:00:00 AM. I would like to run a query that converts that value to '200501' in a created field.
I tried the following below but I keep having problems.
select Account_Number, Date_Time,
concat(year(Date_Time), month(Date_Time)) as Date_Time_Modified
from table
where Account_Number = xxxx

My requirement is to concatenate two column values and place them in a new column.I have done it using self join but it limits the purpose,meaning when I have more than 2 values for grouped columns then it won't work.How to make this dynamic,so that for any number of columns grouped,I can concatenate.
SELECT a.co_nm, a.mnfst_nr, a.mnfst_qty,
a.mnfst_nr || ':' || a.mnfst_qty || ';' || b.mnfst_nr || ':'
|| b.mnfst_qty
FROM vw_acao_critical a JOIN vw_acao_critical b
ON a.co_nm = b.co_nm AND a.mnfst_nr = b.mnfst_nr
[code]......
What will be the case when I need to concatenate for more number of values.
like when co_nm has three bahs and manfst_nr and manfst_qty has 3 values for each for bah.and if three are having same_mnfst nr then I should use something dynamic.how to achieve this.

When I run a query form the the Query Window in Visuial Studios 2012 all the date fields truncated to 'mm/dd/yyyy', but i need the full date returned. I am able to get full date from TO_char(MyDateField, 'yyyy-mm-dd hh24:mi:ss'), but if I do TO_DATE(MyDateField, 'yyyy-mm-dd hh24:mi:ss') it only returns 'mm/dd/yyyy'. I'm sure this is a simple setting in Visual studios but I cant find it to save my life. Is there there a way to have the full date returned by default?

I want to reset my date to this format: 12/31/2012 11:59:59 PM - see code below:
DECLARE
v_latest_close DATE;
BEGIN
v_latest_close := TO_DATE ('12/31/2012 23:59:59 ','MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS');
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('The new date format is : '|| v_latest_close);
END;
the code above displays only : 12/31/2012 instead of 12/31/2012 11:59:59 PM

i have a table test on 4 different-different database, at the starting structure is same in all the database. and now i want to change the datatype of the primary key column named "testid" , then i add a temp column in test table (and it is added at the last in table).
i have copied the data of testid in temp column and renamed it as testid and i dropped the testid column , then the problem is that primary key column will comes at last and i want to make it like previous position so that there will not be any difference in all 4 database as in structure.
is it possible to changing column order as our desire without dropping the table?and i made all the script to changing the datatype of primary key column.

I have a query to pull the first contact of students.
The table has all contacts like parent/guardian, friends family, emergency contact etc.
I would like to the first primary contact in this order,
1. initial contact, 2. same as student address and also have to be parents,
3. live with and also a parent, 4. parents 5. friends.
I don't know how to pull 2 and 3 . because it looks like it needs to concatenate the columns.
here is my initial query
Select Min(U2.Id) Keep (Dense_Rank First Order By U2.Initial_Contact Desc, U2.Same_As_Students_Address Desc,u2.lives_with DESC,U2.Guardian Desc)
From Contacts
how to achieve 2 and 3?
The table script is attached. All the above columns are 1 or 0.

I have an Excel spreadsheet that just had a format change. The fourth column is new. Order of columns in Excel is:
oldcol1
oldcol2
oldcol3
oldcol4
newcol
oldcol5
Sqlldr script is in order of the .csv file just listed. Oracle table is in order
oldcol1
oldcol2
oldcol3
oldcol4
oldcol5
newcol
When I run the sqlldr script, the information is loaded:
oldcol1
oldcol2
oldcol3
oldcol4
newcol in oldcol5
so that all the information is loaded incorrectly. Out side of having to change the table, is there anything I can do to make it load correctly?

How do you setup a default style for displaying the output columns in sqlplus? The columns look clumsy when queried. They display correctly in Toad but, I wanted to learn through sqlplus and I am relatively new to Oracle world. Here is the DESC of table
SQL> DESC EMP.GROUP_TYPE

Null? Type

Oracle version : 11.2.0.2 Linux EL6 server
I have a query like below:
select col1, col2, col3, col4
from tab1, tab2, tab3
where conditions
union
[Code]...
Now, the col4 is a date column and I have to order by the entire result sets on it. I know I can do it by (order by col4) or by (order by 4) at the end of the entire query.
But the problem is that, the output is coming in dd-Mon-yyyy (i.e 31-Nov-2012).
I want every output in dd/mm/yyyy format so I need to use to_char function.
But in that case, I cant use the order by clause, because in that case it is getting arranged by character i.e by 1,2,3,4,5 like this.

I have a simple question, hope it has a simple answer. I changed the default date format for a SCHEMA using a TRIGGER and AFTER LOGON, so it set the NLS_DATE_FORMAT='YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS'. It does work fine, however, the problem is when I connect using a client with JDBC driver. When using SQL PLUS I get the date in the format specified above YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS, however, when using a client (Aqua Data 6.5.8 I know it is kinda old) and SQuirrel SQL 3.4.0 I always get the date in the YYYY-MM-DD format. I started to think that the issue is with the JDBC because it works fine when I connect with SQLPLUS.
