PL/SQL :: How To Retrieve Information About Columns Of Tables

Nov 16, 2012

I am trying to get information about the columns of tables in Oracle databases. In MySQL, show columns provides good deal of information.But in Oracle, we do not have such equivalent call."describe" shows only the primary key.

But it does not show whether any column has unique constraint or an index.

I created a column in a table with unique constraint (but not a primary key), but it was not listed with CONSTRAINT_TYPE = 'U' in dba_constraints view, but was listed with CONSTRAINT_TYPE = 'C' - Check constraint.

SQL & PL/SQL :: Joining Tables - Copy Values Of One Row To Other?

May 20, 2010

consider the following

WITH table1 AS
(
SELECT 345 id, To_Date('1/31/2010', 'mm/dd/yyyy') dt, 123 cid, 'test' txt FROM dual UNION ALL
SELECT 345 id, To_Date('2/1/2010', 'mm/dd/yyyy') dt, 121 cid, 'test2' txt FROM dual UNION ALL
SELECT 345 id, To_Date('2/2/2010', 'mm/dd/yyyy') dt, 112 cid, 'test3' txt FROM dual UNION ALL
SELECT 345 id, To_Date('2/3/2010', 'mm/dd/yyyy') dt, 162 cid, 'test4' txt FROM dual UNION ALL

[code]..

i want to output the following:

{code}
IDDT CIDTXT
3451/31/2010123test6
3452/1/2010121test2
3452/2/2010112test3

[code]....

as you can see, i want to join both tables (table1 and ov_dates) and take dt from ov_dates table look it up in table1 and thengrap ov_dt and looking up in table1 and copy values of one row to the other.

for example, in ov_dates i have 3/31 dt and 4/7 ov dt. i will look for 3/31 and 4/7 row in table 1 and copy columns values from 4/7 to 3/31you can see that cid for 3/31 stay the same (since i dont want to replace the value) but txt value was replace with value from 4/7

another examplein ov_dates we have 1/31 dt and 2/5. so i go into table1 get 1/31 and 2/5 row and copy values from 2/5 into 1/31/ as you can see the txt column value for 1/31 becametest6 since it was taking from 2/5. the same thing for the rest ofdata

SQL & PL/SQL :: Copy Related Data From / To Same Tables - Combined With Changed String And Unique ID

Aug 12, 2010

I'm trying to copy a particular set of rows into two tables. I want to change one varchar column to a different string in one of the tables, and create a new unique ID for the copied rows that will match on both tables. I also want that new unique ID to be one digit higer than the current highest unique ID being used across the tables as a whole.

create table testing_query_dtl
(query_is number not null, query_type varchar2(20) not null, area_code varchar(4), stn_code varchar2(3))
create table testing_query_hdr
(user_name varchar2(30) not null, query_indicator varchar2(1) not null
, query_created date not null,
query_last_used date not null,
query_name varchar2(40) not null
, query_is number not null)
[code]...

I then used 'mymax+test_seq.nextval' but that won't avoid the unique constraint issue on the table testing_query_hdr and on the table testing_ query_ dtl increments the ID on EVERY row even when I don't want it to.

How Much REDO Would Increase If Enable Supplemental Logging

Nov 8, 2013

we  use  Oracle11gR2 on Win2008R2 .By erroneous operation of OracleDB, there was trouble that we could not log in to Application(Oracle Insight) running on Oracle11gR2. I looked up and understand by running the below ALTER DATABASE ADD SUPPLEMENTAL LOG DATA we can find the SQL statement that was executed in the past from SQL_REDO column of V$ LOGMNR_CONTENTS table, undo SQL statement to rollback from  SQL_UNDO column of V$ LOGMNR_CONTENTS table. But , we are concerned about the adverse effect of enabling the supplemental log because it is production environment . I heard the contents of the REDO log will increase if we enable supplemental log.

Q1-How much the REDO log would increase roughly if you enable supplemental log ? ( I am concerned about the issue of the capacity of the  REDO log  and the problem of DB performance . )

Q2-Is it necessary to restart the DB instance to enable supplemental logging after executing the below ?ALTER DATABASE ADD SUPPLEMENTAL LOG DATA.

Q3-Is there any other adverse effect we should care  if you enable supplemental log ?

Q4-Logminer is usable if DB is running on no-archive mode ? In my understanding , it is possible if  you enable supplemental log and have the REDO logs we would like to analyze.

PL/SQL :: Pulling DDL Information For A Table

Nov 5, 2013

We are running Oracle 10g. I need to pull the DDL information from our Oracle tables. The following SQL statement returns the result as a "HUGECLOB". Is there a way to convert the result to text in varchar2 data type? Since tables being processed have numerous partitions, the DDL information for them is quite large, therefore, using substring would not be a viable alternative.

Server Administration :: How To View Table Constraints Information

Mar 13, 2010

I know that you can view all constraints in a table using $USER_CONSTRAINTS or $USER_INDEXES view. What i find difficult is that the information in those views is not really well presented.

I find it very hard to follow. For example, just to find out which columns are foreign keys and which tables they refer to is really tedious. Is there a simpler way to view all the constraints especially foreign keys of a table and including which table columns they refer to in the child table.

I like to see a diagramatic representaion of all the tables involved so i like to see both the parent and the child tables, which columns are related and using which FKs etc. is there an easier way to view this information?

Capture Login Of Terminal In Audit Trail When Login Through Grid?

May 15, 2013

I am trying to understand how to enable some audit so we can capture OEM logins as well.

Here is my setup. Lets say my DB that i am auditing is called audit_db (audit trail set to DB) sitting on host called host_db. and we have grid control agent on this box.now my grid control is as this. Lets say my OMS and repository is on host called OMS_host.

we run query aginst dba_audit_session to get info as to who tried failed login attemps and stuff.

Now to the part that is not working.

-- this is the good part When i intentionaly login to the audit_db with sqlplus client from my laptop with wrong username/password that is captured. we get the username,os_username,userhost,terminal.

here is the sample output

username is the wrong user that i tried to login as
os_username is the my local username(ad account)
userhost is my_laptop_name
terminal is laptop_name

from above we can figure who was trying to login(failed).

-- this is the bad part But lets say i try to login to audit_db through grid control and use wrong username/password.that gets captured too(but not all of it). we get the username,os_username,userhost,terminal.

here is the sample output

username is the wrong user that i tried to login as
os_username is the user of OMS repository db(oracle)
userhost is oms_host
terminal is unknown

Now with the above info, we cannot figure out who tried to login with bad login credential.

SQL & PL/SQL :: Copy Data From Table A To B?

Apr 30, 2010

i could copy data from tableA to tableB with the scenario below

1) Currently we have no unique key / primary key defined on both of this tables, due to the nature of data, so insert/update will not work
2) We cant truncate/insert as user will be accessing this tables when the copying process takes place, so we dont want to end up having a scenario where the table does not contain data at a certain time

Will materialize view full refresh work in refreshing a table so we could avoid the problem faced in point 1 & 2.

SQL & PL/SQL :: Copy Data From One Table To Another

Feb 11, 2013

I have two tables namely PERSON and WIFE. I want to make WIFE's data available in PERSON table while keeping entries of WIFE maintained and at the same time adding some the values of PERSON against the data of wife.

PERSON Table
PK NAME ADDRESS IS_MARRIED
1 John ab city Y
2 Varvatos cd town N
3 Smith ef town Y
4 Henry gh city Y
5 Lynda gh city Y

WIFE table

PK PERSON_ID (FK) NAME
1 1 Alice
2 3 Rosy
3 4 Lynda

Now i want to copy data of WIFE table into PERSON table like this PERSON table

PK NAME ADDRESS IS_MARRIED
1 John ab city Y
2 Varvatos cd town N
3 Smith ef town Y
4 Henry gh city Y
5 Lynda gh city Y
6 Alice ab city Y
7 Rosy ef town Y

As in the given example you might have noticed that ADDRESS of wife is same as of her spouse and same goes for IS_MARRIED column. Moreover, the PK is also not duplicated. How to go about this?

Another important factor is Lynda already exits in PERSON table, therefore, i certainly don't want to duplicate her entry.

How To Create Exact Copy Of A Table

Nov 24, 2012

I must admit my "google skills" have failed me and it is possible that I might be missing something obvious here but allow me to explain.

If I have a table that is populated/accessed by a typical OLTP application such that over time the data in the table may become "fragmented".

I know that is a very controversial term I used but that is not the question here. A simple way to describe the state of the table might be that the table has always been populated with lots of small INSERTs, modified with lots of small UPDATEs and data has been deleted in small DELETEs.

This has meant that the data is neither closely stored in data blocks nor is in any particular order (so there are some empty blocks under HWM).

Now my question is how do I create exact copy of this table and its indexes AS THEY EXIST AT THE MOMENT that includes

1) its data
2) its constraints/indexes etc.
3) its storage parameters
4) data stored in EXACTLY same manner as in original table.

To avoid complications, the table in question is just a normal heap table without any partitioning involved. While

CREATE TABLE AS SELECT (or CREATE TABLE followed by INSERT) will take care of points (1) to (3) above, it will not achieve point (4) above.

SQL & PL/SQL :: Copy Into Same Table / Recursive Rename Of Duplicates

May 11, 2011

In MS Windows, if I copy a file and paste it into the same folder, I get a copy with the text 'Copy of' in front of the file name. If I paste it again, I get another copy with a different version number.

E.g.
sqlnet.log
Copy of sqlnet.log
Copy (1) of sqlnet.log
Copy (2) of sqlnet.log

I was wondering if I could copy existing rows into a table and do the same thing?

So, for example if I had this table:

create table tst_srch (srch_is varchar(100), user_name varchar(100), srch_name varchar(100));

insert into tst_srch values (1,'USER1','SRCHA');
insert into tst_srch values (2,'USER1','SRCHB');
insert into tst_srch values (3,'USER1','SRCHC');
insert into tst_srch values (4,'USER1','SRCHD');
insert into tst_srch values (5,'USER2','SRCHC');
insert into tst_srch values (6,'USER2','SRCHD');
insert into tst_srch values (7,'USER2','SRCHD_1');

Could I write a procedure like copy_searches('USER1','USER2') that would copy all USER1's searches to USER2 - including renaming any duplicates.

So it would create these new rows:

8,USER2,SRCHA
9,USER2,SRCHB
10,USER2,SRCHC_1
11,USER2,SRCHD_2

I've looked at various insert statements, merge and match statements and exception handling in procedures .
