SQL & PL/SQL :: Loading Unique Text File Names With Utl_file

I am using an Oracle 8i database.We intend creating a dbms_job that would run every 5 minutes. The job executes a script that would use utl_file to read two text files (a header file and detail file) from a particular directory and load the data into temporary tables. The naming convention of the files are Parts_Master_DD/MM/YY HH:MI:SS and Parts_Stats_DD/MM/YY HH:MI:SS. Both files to be stored in the same directory.
If the file name was constant ie. Parts_Master, Parts_Stats I would not have a problem. However with each file name now going to be unique, how do I handle this using utl_file. To add to my dilemma, within an hour more than one set of files could be piped to the directory to be read into the database.

I have a table
TAB1 with data
no name
1 abc
2 abc
3 xyz
4 xyz
5 cvb
now I would like to create a form with name counts as
abc 2
xyz 2
cvb 1
I would like to create a datablock to display all the unique names, not sure where I should be writing the query to display unique names. I would like to create a textitem box to display the counts when the form is compiled, but not sure which trigger to use to write the query.

I have an application that creates files using the utl_file package. It works fine but one of the lines in the file should hold the number of bytes in the file (on a line formatted like 'FileSize: 2104'). Unfortunately this line is not the last line of the file and the lines that follow it are variable in length.
My approach therefore is as follows:
1. Write the 'FileSize: ' line during file creation.
2. Write the remaining lines of data to the file (but don't close it).
3. Use utl_fgetattr to find the file size.
4. Go back and find the 'FileSize' line I need to update, using get_line to read it into the buffer.
5. Append the filesize (plus the number of characters that the variable I use to store the filesize value) to the buffer string.
6. Write the line back to the file using put_line.
However I keep getting invalid file operation errors however I try to re-access the file...

This gives me the following output.... (for two files)... currently I am using some generic exception handling just to show me the error.

Process exited.
Two things here concern me: The File Position suggests that the current offset position is set to the start of the file... but since I had not closed or performed any other operation since the last put_line and fflush (which are used to add lines to the file) I had expected that the offset position would be the same as the file length?
Secondly: Even if the position had been reset to the start of the file I don't understand why the get_line gives me the oracle error.

I'm creating a file using UTL_FILE.FOPEN and UTL_FILE.PUTF
But I don't know the file I created is in which encoding ASCII, UTF-8, EBCDIC etc.
1.) How can I create files in my desired encoding using UTL_FILE?
2.) Does UTL_FILE use database encoding? If yes then how to find out database encoding?
3.) Which encoding is used by UTL_FILE by default?

How to spool the Japanese characters in table using UTL_FILE. I tried with utl_file.fopen it's general,it's spooling. but i am not sure it this right way or not. in this case we need to change any character.
We can't see this characters in TOAD. Only possible in PLSQL developer

We have a requirement to create a file using UTL_FILE package. so we tried to generate the file in directory at UNIX level,for example "/tmp" which means when we executing the stored procedure which in turn calls UTL_FILE package and create a file say "a.txt". On checking the permission for "a.txt", it shows as follows
-rw-r----- oracle dba a.txt
this means read and write for oracle user, read for dba group and no permission for other user.
our requirement is to have the following privileges at UNIX level.
-rw-r--r-- oracle dba a.txt
Is it possible to do at oracle level since the file is owned by oracle user or at UNIX level (with out logging to oracle user)?
Environment: UNIX AIX 6.1 and Oracle 11.2.0.3

During a duplicate process to a new database name, rman crashed after the restore but before the switch datafile all.So now, we have under ASM the data files under the correct (new) diskgroup but v$datafile contains the previous names (and so diskgroup) and v$datafile_header is empty. RMAN is completly lost, our solution is to manually rename each file under SQL*Plus using ALTER DATABASE RENAME FILE. Unfortunately, we are using or migrating to OMF, so file names are meaningless and we are unable to associate ASM files with database files.
Any way (query or anything else) to associate the ASM files to the database files. Here's an abstract of what we have for one (small) tablespace:

I have a multi-record block with several text items.
On one of the text items i want to enter a value and then check whether the same value for the item has already been entered on any other records within the block.
If it has already been entered then i want to display a message and null out the field.
I have tried using app_record.for_All_records from a when-validat-item trigger but this does not work as you get a 'FRM-40737 Illegal restricted procedure go_block in when-validate-item trigger ' error

I am loading data from XML file into Oracle table.This program is working fine for small XML files. If I try to load large XML file with multiple pages, only first ten records are loaded. Here is the procedure.

Iam using Oracle client 11g(32 bit) and Oracle database 11g on Unix server.
I have the created the following procedure to load XML file located in TEST_XML oracle directory( which is mapped to
DB/bulk01/REFLIB/REFDV/LOAD_XML) on the server.

Looks like it did not find my oracle directory 'TEST_XML'
do I have to do anything like mapping? if so since my database is on unix server how do I map?

I have question on the following, that gets defined for the bad file and the log file

What does the %a and % p indicate? Also if I wanted to get the value of %p and %a into a variable how would I do it? I want to be able to append %p and %a to the below variable, but unsure how to achieve it..

if there is any package provided with DB that would allow me to import XML file and then use XPath to read the data? I need to insert it in proper tables then. I could see packages to create XML files, but I could not see any one to load it from the file. I could see it could be done in Java using XMLDOM, but is there any way of doing this using pure PL/SQL?

I am trying to load a input flat file (french data in it) into the database using pro*c (not using sql loader because of some validations ). i am reading the line by line and populating it into the structure and then process it.
The input file is encoded in WE8ISO8895P1 , I want the records to be populated into a table. so i did set NLS_LANG=French_France.WE8ISO8895P1 and ran the pro*c program . i used character host variable in the insert query , i used data from the earlier read structure and set these character host variable.
The problem i am facing is , when i am printing the values before insert i could see correct data.
For example the printed data of variable is "pas de donné " and strlen is 14. the target table field is of varchar type
( name varchar(20 char) )
but after i insert i could see only the truncated value in the database i.e "pas de donn" in the table length is 11.
