We are running Oracle Apps 11i on Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise SP2 (32 bit). After enabling /3GB switch parameter in Boot.ini file, the OS recognizes the 8GB RAM and consumes it upto 5.6GB during non-peak hours but as workload increases in evening when end users generate auto receipts the same memory usage ratio reaches upto 6GB resulting the OS gets hang and don't respond at all. Inspite of having 2GB free memory it doesn't consume it. We have to shut down it by pressing the power off button and restart it
The system configuration is as under:
HP ProLiant DL380 G6
Intel Xeon 2.4 GHz
8GB RAM (4 x 2 GB)

When running my query in sql developer, I have to execute the command apps.fnd_global.apps_initialize(user_id, resp_id, resp_appl_id) in order to show the result of my query. Without this, the query returns nothing. The problem is I am using this query as a custom query for my Discoverer report and my report does not show any record.

I've read a lot about the different types of backup available with Oracle (hot and cold backup). However, I was thinking of a different way of performing this task. I'm currently using Windows Server 2008 R2 and Oracle 11g Standard Edition. I'd like to schedule an entire backup of my server via the utility "Windows Server Backup" (available for free).That way, I could recover my entire server with all the programs and files in case the latter crashes.I'm wondering if this solution could be used as a way of backing up (and recovering) the Oracle database. Should I still set up a regular hot backup with the Archivelog mode enabled in case some operations/transactions were being done at the time of the crash (for the data integrity)?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI set 'maxopenfiles 4' when allocating channel to sbt in my products env, I got 2 backup pieces in one backup set because that tablespace has 7 datafiles. Other configuration is kept as default, such as no maxsize, no MAXPIECESIZE, and etc setting.
I read document from Oracle. It says:"By default a backup set contains one backup piece. To restrict the size of each backup piece, specify the MAXPIECESIZE option of the CONFIGURE CHANNEL or ALLOCATE CHANNEL commands. " And also, maxopenfiles configure does not force another backup piece generated. So, why do I get another backup piece?
BTW, I tried this on another testing environment. I only get one backup piece even there are more than 2 times maxopnefiles datafiles.
I have the RMAN full database backup of oracle 10g (10.2.0.3) on Sun Solaris OS which i want to restore on oracle 11g (11.2.0.3) on Linux OS. The backup pieces was transferred to oracle 11g server manually in binary mode.

When you create a backup in SQL Server, whether the backup is on disk or on tape, SQL Server writes the letters TAPE to the first four bytes of the backup. Does Oracle write any specify value to the front of every backup, and if so, what are the first four bytes?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 2 seperate rman backup one backup is of only datafile ,spfile and controlfile which i am able to restore and recover without any problem say bkp1 taken at 10 am
other set of backup is of only archive log files of same day but later time than datafile backup say bkp2 taken at 8pm...if i restore and recover bkp1 and try to restore bkp2 it gives error datafile exist (possibly due to fact both backup have control file)
if i just restore bkp1 and try to restore bkp2 so that i can do one recover at time
it gives error datafile permission issue (possibly due to fact both backup have control file)
I want to restore database upto 8pm time how can i use both bkp1 and bkp2 to do it(restore datafiles and apply all archive logs on it)
I am currently reading some articles/documents to backup and restore Oracle databases. I found that Oracle databases can be backed either up by RMAN('Recovery Manager' tool supplied by oracle) or doing a "Hot Backup" (bring the database to backup mode and then copying the Physical datafile by issuing operating system "copy" command). The above methods do not meet my needs. I want to backup Orcale databases via my own application and I use C++. Hence, I am searching for an API that can be used with C++ to backup the Oracle databases.
Is there any API to backup the Oracle database that we can integrate with our own application program? [Like , To backup SQL Server Database , we can use VDI(virtual Device Interface) API to backup the SQL server database]
My boss gave me a 1GB Oracle .dmp file, and I told him that I could handle it easily (ie, install Oracle on a machine, import the .dmp file, and export / move it onto a MS SQL server).
Oracle has turned out to be far more difficult to learn than I originally thought, however. Even after a week of reading search results and watching YouTube videos, I still feel completely in the dark.
Restoring an Oracle backup? (Once the backup is restored, that should be it - I have an ETL tool (Scribe Insight) for reading an Oracle database and moving it to SQL. I can use GoToMeeting for screen sharing.)
I try this for backup:
$ exp scott/tiger FULL=y FILE='d:\demo.dmp';
and this for restore:
$ imp scott/tiger FULL=y FILE='d:\demo.dmp';
and after restore i can't see the data in my tables. (i work on Oracle 11.2.0 64bit)
if you are using ShadowProtect to backup your Oracle databases. What are your experiences and the pros and cons in using ShadowProtect as the one and only backup/recovery tools for Oracle databases? Can the potential of ShadowProtect replaces the commonly use Oracle backup/recovery tools?
The reason why I raise this question is because my boss has the idea that ShadowProtect is THE best backup/recovery tools. Personally I don't think so, because there can be cases where we only need to recover the database and not the whole OS.
Is there any Oracle query I can run to determine the "number of days since the last backup"? SQL Server provides this data but I cant seem to find the equivalent for Oracle. Looks like there may be some information like this via RMAN tables and if so I want to create the simplest query possible to obtain that information.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm going to backup this un-maintained Oracle 11g server in my office. I'm being told it's never been backed up and extremely critical to our success so tomorrow I'll be performing my 1st backup of the database using RMAN. My question is if I connect to the Oracle 11g database and run the:
[oracle@db1 ~]$ rman target=/
Recovery Manager: Release 11.2.0.1.0 - Production on Mon Feb 13 13:18:05 2012

RMAN> shutdown immediate
using target database control file instead of recovery catalog
database closed
database dismounted
Oracle instance shut down
BACKUP DATABASET FORMAT /oracle/u01/app/oracle/backup/%d-%T-%s-%P;
My question is the above sufficient for a safe full backup? We only have the one single target database called 'cqdb' which houses several schemas. Can you tell me if this is correct? I've shut the database down so it's in a cold state so I don't think I need to configure the FRA (Flash / Fast Recovery Area) but I honestly don't know. This is my 2nd time on a Oracle DBMS.
What about the 'archivelog' files? Do I back those up? Do I need them in case a recovery? Also what about the 'controlfile'? Do I need to back those up as well as the mentioned above?
