Is It One Alert Log Per Instance Or One Per Database

View 4 RepliesI am running Oracle XE . This database collects information about server statistics in my organization ( memory usage, threads running, etc). Now , I need to send alert/ notification emails if the certain thresholds are crossed by server ( ex: if number of threads increase more than 100, send an alert email).
One way to do this is to write stored procedures and schedule them to run every hour and send alert email if conditions are met.
But what I want to do is to use some sort of rule engine where I can specify the rules/conditions which have to be true for alerts to be sent. The reason I want this approach is so that every time there is a new rule, I do not have to write a new stored procedure and I can just specify the condition in the rule engine . So are there any Rule Engines out there that I can use (preferably open source and free to use)?
i am seeing (LGWR switch) happening in my databsae alert log every 3-4 minutes. is that appropriate? if not, what measure can i take to reduce this?

I cant able to connect to my local DB instance. Oracle service for DB instance will be started running when the system boots automatically.I faced this problem before, I was instructed to boot my system without network connection. It worked for few days. Suddenly I cant able to connect to my local DB instance again, even though I am booting my system without network connection.
This is the configuration I have in tnsnames.ora in my local machine.I have the host as localhost, because local machine is laptop and IP will change periodically.

Is it possible to use oracle dataguard from single instance to RAC instance ? Does Oracle dataguard support this ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy context on our servers is the following one:
- one ASM instance
- X DB instances
- each DB instance uses 2 or more dedicated diskgroups from the ASM instance
- there is one diskgroup named FREEDISK that contains spare disks
On each DB instance you can see:
- the list and global parameters of all diskgroups using v$asm_diskgroup view
- the list and parameters of all disks the instance is using with v$asm_disk view
So my question is: how (if this is possible) to know the list of (spare) disks in FREE DISK disk group?

I am running ORACLE 10.2.0 on Windows Virtual PC. System: Microsoft Windows XP SP3.
Yesterday I wanted to make a copy of my Virtual Machine Hard Drive Image. I directly copied all the files to my external hard drive, but I forgot shutting down my virtual machine when I was doing this.
Today I found my instance failed startup.
In OEM, it is showing:
Agent Connection to Instance

In SQLPlus:
SQL> connect sys/password as sysdba

We are planning to consolidate our Oracle Production DB into one server. We are basically a windows shop. Is it feasible to run 8 production Oracle DB in one windows server. All the DB are not really transaction intensive DB. 2 DB in the size of 300GB and others all DB falls under average size of 40GB.
I can take care of the HD slicing so Oracle does not enter into IO bottleneck. We are planning to go for external NAS or SAN for storage.
My main concern is on processor usage. The processor we are thinking about is Intel Xeon Quad Core x 2nos. Will there be a processor bottleneck or is there way in Oracle to assign processor usage(I belive there is no much tweaking options here)

I would like to use Oracle Grid Infrastructure to protect a single-instance database.
I found these docs:
[URL]
I was unable to find a similar document for GI 11.2 . Do you know if such a document exists?
At the moment I only know that the GI is free if used for an Oracle Product, but I am not shure whether it can be used to protext external applications or single-instance databases
I'm trying to test moving a single instance 11202 database to single instance w/ grid infra.
Here is what I've done:
1. Install a database (11202), single instance and create a database
2. Install Grid Software only (user: grid)
3. start the cluster
4. "srvctl add database -d orclsidb -o $ORACLE_HOME" to register the database with grid.
4.1> I was able to start/stop the database with srvctl command here onwards
5. configure disks using asmlib and start the asm
6. "srvctl add asm" to register asm with grid.

I have to apply monitoring template on my databases. Databases are already added and configured into OEM. They are visible under Databases tab and also under Groups where I have added them.
But when I try applying monitoring template and look for database in search window, it doesn't appear there.
I have a requirement to change the instance parameter of the primary database and standby in the data guard. Any procedure to do the same. I have to do it directly on production and there is no test set up so I cannot experiment . The procedure I am thinking of is as below.
1. Stop the standby
2. backup the primary
3. Change the parameter and restart to make it effective
4. Start the primary
5. Go to stand by
6. Change the parameter and mount the database.
7. Check if both are in sync and apply logs if not.
I am using Oracle RAC 11.2.0.3 as primary database, we are going to start using Oracle data guard. So I am designing my infrastructure and planing to use Oracle 11.2.0.3 Single instance as my physical stand by database.
My question is it feasible to have my standby database as single instance while the primary is RAC? is it feasible to build my Oracle single instance standby database from the RMAN backup of the RAC primary database? Is there any restrictions (or any points to be taken into consideration) since my primary database is RAC while the physical standby is Oracle single instance?
in the below link

it was mentioned that primary can be RAC or single and same for standby, but my question is it feasible to have primary as RAC while standby as single instance? or it should be like each others?
The primary database can be either a single-instance Oracle database or an Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) database. Similar to a primary database, a standby database can be either a single-instance Oracle database or an Oracle RAC database.
Find an appropriate script to automate Oracle DBs in one server? This db server have 6 instances. We always done the starting up and shutting down manually, although we have a reference script that does this but in Oracle v7.3.4. We do want to include the automatic start/stop of dbconsole for accessing it via OEM.
