May 18, 2010I got ORA-12528 while i was connecting sys as sysdba from remote machine to theinstance which is started in nomount mode. Although tnsping for that instance is working.

SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES=NTS
After they changes to NTS they can log in and access other user details right ? how to restrict

PCI - Auditing Connect / As Sysdba - Connections?
Feb 15, 2012I have a problem with a PCI DSS - requirement in Oracle 11.2. (PCI DSS = Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard)
Problem:
we connect via ' ssh -2 -X -l oracle hostname ' to the databaseserver and become os-user 'oracle'. we have also two offshore locations with dba's and each dba comes with his personalized user to the jumphost and then with the above ssh command to the database server.
the problem is that each dba becomes the oracle-os-account and can now connect with '/ as sysdba' to the database.in pci-dss this is not allowed !
now my question:how can I audit these '/ as sysdba'-connections and prove which user connected at which time with the '/ as sysdba' command ?
database is in audit mode. we log to syslog on linus redhat 5. I know one solution could be setting "SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES" parameter to "NONE" in sqlnet.ora file will make it not possible to connect to the database without a password as sysdba. (sqlplus / as sysdba). but we have to many applications and jobs and this is not really the solution in this case.
I think I can only solve this problem with personalized OS-user DBA-accounts in the dba-goup on os-site and os-user oracle should not be used for the future ?? I also need personalized dba-user-accounts in the database. using sys and system is not allowed. this users has to be locked and only for special administration work could it be unlocked.

ORA-00257 - Archives Error And Impossible To Connect As Sysdba
Apr 8, 2013I have a problem with my Oracle istance and so far I couldn't fix it, I have and Oracle 11g XE istance running on windows server 2003.A couple of days ago I received the error message "ORA-00257: archiver error".I found tips in this forum and wanted to apply but sqlplus doesn't recognize my SYS user/password. I type the correct password but no chance to log in.
If I try to connect using a client like Toad, I receive the message ORA-12170: TNS:Connect timeout occurred. I checked the firewall rules, but it's ok, moreover I was logging in in the past and any change has been performed on it. I learned it's possible to change SYS password.
If I connect as "/ as sysdba" on sqlplus I read "Connected to an idle istance".In order to connect as "/" I had to update sqlnet.ora and restart the service. The parameter SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES
was set as NONE ad I set as NTS. I should probably have to set it as ALL? I found out the orapwd utility to change SYS password throught password file for remote login as sysdba.
I tried to create that file, and when I ran the command it asked me the SYS password, I typed it and it created the file, so I guess the password I type is correct (I had the question to type it wrong). I didn't go to the next step as I wasn't sure to make the right thing and I don't want to make this issue bigger.
As long as I can't log in as sysdba I can't perform the actions mentioned in tips to fix the error 257, but I'm also wondering if the archive error can have a side effect and deny the action of update the SYS password.

Connecting Oracle 8 To SQL Server
Dec 5, 2011I'm trying to make a connection to sql server from an ORACLE 8.0.4 (I know, it's ancient) but can't seem to get it to work. I've read a lot of articles on the internet regarding the Heterogeneous Services but just can't get it to work on my system. Therefor I tried an example on connecting to an Excel workbook I found on another forum [URL] but that gives me the same problem as with connecting to sql server.
Here is what I've got:

Is there any way I can test parts of the connection to limit the location of the problem? (e.g. does the listener get to the TNS)

Count Field Not Resetting When Connecting Through VB
Jul 13, 2010I am working with an asp.net/vb.net application whose users have oracle accounts to connect to the application.The database is set up to allow three failed login attempts. When connecting directly to the database, the sys.user$ lcount field increments on unsuccessful login attempts, and resets to 0 on successful login attepts. This is what I expect should happen.
However, when logging in through the application, using:
objConnection = New OracleConnection(m_strConnectionString)
objConnection.Open()
the lcount field sporatically increments on unsuccessful login attempts (sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't), and never resets to 0 on successful login attempts. I would have expected it to behave as it does when connecting directly to the database.
Why does the lcount field not reset on a successful login through the application? How can I make it increment on each unsuccessful login attempt and reset on each successful login attempt?

I then reinstalled oracle 10g express and downloaded APEX 3.2..
However, wen its time to upgrade to APEX3.2 via the command prompt... the previous version of APEX 4.0 (11.1.0.6.0) is being read.
how to reset this to the original value 10.2.0.10 (10g express edition) ?
Control Timeout Before Connecting Via DBLink?
Feb 28, 2012Is there any way to control the timeout before connecting via dblink. the idea is to test the dblink before calling functions over it, the problem it when i try 'select 1 from dual@dblink' in case if the remote server is down it takes too long time 5-7 min. which causing hang up the session,
So is there any parameter to reduce the waiting time say after 3 sec stop and return the timeout exception.I try the SQLNET.INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT parameter but not working, also try the tnsping but it alse take long time when the server down.
the database version is 10gr2.
TNS Error : Connecting To Remote Oracle DB From .Net
Sep 22, 2010I have been trying to connect to an remote oracle db from c# .Net . I believe I have the proper code (Cos when the user id and password strings were omitted , it threw an error of invalid user Id and password).
Once this was properly provided , the connection is now throwing "TNS Error : No Listener " error . The same remote DB is perfectly connecting through TOAD and it is from the tnsnames.ora file of the local file that i got the connection string from . Hence , I don't thing its a problems with that as well.

My second question is this - say I had a second Oracle table in the same DB called "MasterTable", with the same two fields as "TempTable" (PACKET and DATERET).
