I have new virtual UNIX machine and I installed oracle client on /usr/lib/oracle. Also I have a oracle database and I am able to connect to this database from my desktop sql developer.
So now I am trying to connect from new UNIX machine. Where I created tnsnames.ora file under /usr/lib/oracle/network/admin and before connecting did export the following
export TNS_ADMIN=/usr/lib/oracle/network/admin
export ORACLE_HOME=/usr/lib/oracle/
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib
export PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:/sbin:$ORACLE_HOME/bin
export ORACLE_SID=VFIODSD1
when I try
# sqlplus
username :xxxxxxx
password : xxxxxxx
ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist. Not sure what I missed here. using same tns file I am able to connect from sql developer on windows.

An application uses one user as a container of objects(this user is stripped of ALL privileges), and other users that can access objects in this unique schema depending on their privileges.
There can be multiple installations of the application in one database, therefore many such schemes. An environment variable APP_UNIQUE_SCHEMA points to a current unique schema.
So instead of typing
select * from my_unique_schema.my_table I want to set a current schema for sqlplus session in glogin.sql.
It would have been nice if I could have entered in glogon.sql the following line
alter session set current_schema=$APP_UNIQUE_SCHEMA;
BUT it does not work. sqlplus does not resolve the reference to an environment variable. I cannot figure out how to get the value of an environment variable in sqlplus.

sqlplus
$DB_ACCT << EOSQL
set heading off
set termout off
set pagesize 0
[code]....
My output in FILE.txt looks like this
SQL>
SQL> Select col_with_a||col_with_b||col_with_c from
2 alphabet_table;
abc
[code]....
I tried several options by putting set echo off, etc.What do I include in the sql script to get the output as :
abc

without the SQL prompt and the statement, and the spool off command?

1. In previous version of Toad (9.7.2) during executing a statement I was able to click on 'Explain plan current statement'. In this version of Toad (10.6.0. 42) is not a possible to do it.In the Toad options I've filled the sign: "use a separate connection when Toad itself is generating transactions"
2. During executing a statement I still see 'clock' cursor.Is it a possible to disable to see it?

I would like to store my sql query output into text file.Like for example:
select name from emp where emp_id=101;
Here output should be in text file as
swapna.
I dont want to use spool statement here,since If I use it,spool statement will also be printed in text file which is not my requirement.I just want to take only output.

SELECT MAX(department_id) INTO v_max FROM departments;
:max_dept_no := v_max + 20;
INSERT INTO departments VALUES (:max_dept_no,v_dept_name, NULL,NULL) ;

refer following sql statements and code
Session 1
create table tab1 as select * from dba_objects where object_id is not null;
alter session set events '10046 trace name context forever, level 12';
declare
x number;
begin
for i in 1..4
loop
[code]....
Session 2
after "starting" the above pl/sql block from Session 1, I keep on querying tab2 from Session 2 And as soon as 2 records are inserted in tab2, I create index from Session 2
select * from tab2;
select * from tab2;
select * from tab2;
N
----------
1
2
create index i on tab1(object_id);
As I have tested from a single session (just before this test) such index is used for the sql statement
select count(1) into x from tab1 where object_id=2331;
However when I checked the trace file I am not geeting results as expected
I am expecting 4 execution plans - 2 FTS and 2 Index Access scans and for this I am issuing following command
tkprof dst1_ora_7369.trc dst1_ora_7369.txt aggregate=no sys=no
But unfortunately I am getting following output
SELECT COUNT(1)
FROM
TAB1 WHERE OBJECT_ID=2331
call count cpu elapsed disk query current rows
------- ------ -------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ----------
Parse 1 0.00 0.00 0 1 0 0
Execute 4 0.00 0.00 0 2 0 0
[code]....
1) Why I am unable to see 4 execution plans - 2 with FTS and 2 with Index access when I mentioned 'aggregate=no'?
2) Whether the index i will be used for last 2 iterations after first 2 iterations of FTS?
If answer to above question 2) is 'No'
By which method I can force an ongoing sql statement in loop to take different execution path? Of course I can't hard parse sql in 'that' current session Will flushing Shared pool work in above case?

We are storing some secure information into oracle database so we want to encrypt the data sent by our aplication into oracle database.We do not want to use SSL(i.e certificates) and also do not want to make use of Advance Security Option available in oracle and also do not want to make any changes in sqlnet.ora file on server side.

I'm looking for 3 simple things.
1) A reverse engineering tool that I can point to an Oracle schema and get a "baseline" script to re-create that schema from scratch, with decently formatted DDL files (1 per object) neatly organized in a directory tree (by object type) and called in the correct order. Icing on the cake would be an option to pass the tool a list of tables containing static data and get DMLs to populate (insert) those tables as part of the script.
2) a diff tool that I can point to a pair of Oracle instances (source and target) containing a given schema and get a "delta" script to alter the target schema so that it becomes identical to the source schema. If data loss occurs on the target instance (i.e. drop a column) I would like to find a warning comment inserted in the script (e.g. "-- Attention: data migration DML needed here?"). Icing on the cake would be an option to pass the tool a list of tables containing static data and get DMLs to update (delete, update and insert) the data in the target tables to become identical to the contents in the source tables *without* deleting and re-inserting all rows (or dropping, recreating and repopulating the table).
3) I would like the above two tools (that, as you will have recognized, are basic to putting your database design under version control) to be open-source, with a command-line interface and a vibrant community backing them.

I am using Oracle 9i and Unix on my system and trying to execute a UNIX shell command through external procedure in C.I created a shared lib (libextproc.so) for the following function.
int sysrun(char *command)
{
return system(command);
}
This function runs fine when caled through a driver function in C, meaning that the shared lib is fine.In PL/SQL, I have used the following method to invoke a UNIX command:-
create or replace library shell_lib as '/home/ECETRAonsite/oracle/OraHome1/lib/libextproc.so';
/
create or replace function sysrun (syscomm in varchar2)
return binary_integer
as language C
name "sysrun"
library shell_lib
parameters(syscomm string);
/
Now when I call this PL/SQL function to invoke the command, it is run succesfully but does not create the file.
SQL>
1 declare
2 rc number;
3 begin
4 rc := sysrun('/bin/touch /home/ECETRAonsite/oracle/OraHome1/test/sach');
5 dbms_output.put_line('Return Code='||rc);
6* end;
SQL> /
Return Code=0
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.I have verified that the path for 'touch' is correct.Following are my configuration files.

The problem is that this connection errors when I try to connect using my SQuirreL client. My developers want to connecting using the SID or the SERVICE_NAME and by using the "New Method" syntax, not the "Old Method" syntax. According to the documentation the "New Method" syntax works with the SERVICE_NAME or the SID. The "Old Method" only works with the SID.
# Host name is vmwwin7634.na.SAS.com
# SID is sting2
# SERVICE_NAME is sting2.na.sas.com
PROBLEM using SID errors ==> jdbc:oracle:thin:@vmwwin7634.na.SAS.com:1521/sting2
THIS WORKS using SERVICE_NAME ==> jdbc:oracle:thin:@vmwwin7634.na.SAS.com:1521/sting2.na.sas.com
I am using SQuirreL Client version 3.4.0
# Here is the tnsnames.ora entry on the server.
STING2 =
(DESCRIPTION =

# In this documentation it says, "On new syntax SERVICE may be a oracle service name or a SID."You can find this on the orafax wiki under JDBC#Thin_driver.

jdbc:oracle:thin:@vmwwin7634.na.SAS.com:1521:sting2 (this works)
