how I can avoid PLW-07204 "conversion away from column type may result in sub-optimal query plan" (or rather the problem notified here by Oracle) from my PL/SQL code.My code looks as follows:
create table T(D date);
create or replace procedure P is
cursor C(D_IN IN DATE) is
select D
from T
where trunc(D)=SYSDATE;
begin
null;
end P;

I don't want to disable the warning - it is there for a reason.
Additional description for the issue: It seems that D is of typ=12, while trunc(D) is of typ=13. You can use DUMP to read this info. This is described at URL....

my sql query has three tables in from clause so it has two join conditions and one where condition.
account_no is number data type and v_account_no is varchar2() data type
The where clause is :
"where account_no=to_number(v_account_no)" with this condition in my sql query has the cost 392
we just modify the where clause as where v_account_no=to_char(account_no) with this condition in the sql query has the cost 11.
what is impact of this data type conversion and difference between these two "to_number() and to_char()" in performance wise to reduce the cost of query?

Due to some business requirements a table field needs to change from date to timestamp in order to handle the millisecs.
1>When i alter the row , for a table with 150 million recs will there be a conversion. Is there a recommended way to convert the field. Mind you this field is used as a part of composite PK.
2> There is a interfacing application which connects and copies the data to its system and is using the date type, will that application be able to continue to work without any changes, if it does not care about the millisecs.
3> Will there be performance impact on an existing application that uses the date field to sort
4> Will DB need more space due to the change

The reason to use the the trunc function along with the SYSDATE.
E.g. :- TRUNC(SYSDATE).
Why we need to set the current date into midnight? Where we can use this method?

I am using trunc(sysdate) to load only date in a column and it is coming out with error.

I have to create a table which should store data at Week level. The table have the following columns
Product id, Loc id, Business group id, FISCAL WEEK , Revenue,
Fiscal week column will have data as '2011-W01', '2011-W47' etc.
What should be the data type for fiscal week column. Based on this table i have to create a calculated column which should fetch trailing 12 weeks average for each row.

I checked the DDL of both tables and the only difference is that the TBL_XX_PROGRAM have the ENTRYDATE field defined as not null and the ENTRYDATE on the TBL_BANDWIDTH_READS does not have the same constraint, could it affect?

I am trying to run select query on xml using xmltable. One of the tag returns date and I want to take it in date format in xmltable column.

But its throwing error as -

I have extracted in the following XML document some Mpeg7 visual descriptors from an image and I saved it in an XMLType column. I would like to use XMLQuery to extract the data from the Value node. how write such a query. I could not get the proper Xpath to any node.

- My question is under desc filetable; query why does it not show me a data type as BLOB.
- create table query does not return any error to me. How do I verify that FILE_CONTENT column has datatype as blob.

I´m newbie as Apex developer using Apex 4.0 with OracleXE 11.2, and now my problem is:
I have a tabular form where one of the columns, when calling the form, is a Display Item, so that you cannot change existing values.
I want, when adding a new row, that column become a Select List (named LOV) based on a query that exclude existing values in other rows already inserted.
Can I change that Display Item to Select List (named LOV) programmatically at runtime? If not, what other options do I have?

I have a table with structure as:

- So HOW do I find the total size occupied by this table. Does BINARY storage work as LOB storage. i.e. I need to consider USER_LOBS as well for this. OR foll. will work

From dba_segments
where segment_name = 'XML_TABLE_1'
