RMAN :: Moving Backup Files From Disk

Jul 18, 2013

Accidentally without checking the channel allocation I have given the backup archivelog from sequence until sequence with delete input. This backup piece went to the disk but it should go to Tape.I know that we can catalog this backup piece but I want to move this backup files in disk to Tape using RMAN. Is there anyway or I have to lie with Backup team or OS team for this file movement?

RMAN :: Backup To NFS Disk

Sep 11, 2012

We are running oracle 10g on a solaris system. We were taking the backup to the tape system previously. But the tape system is broken due to some reasons and cannot be used now. Now I am trying to take a rman full backup with archivelog to a NFS disk. The server in which the NFS disk lies is in Ubuntu. I have also considered that there is some problem with the NFS rman backup but can be solved by using hard and noac while mounting. Now I wanted to know is, what parameters should be changed to direct the backup sets to the new location in NFS instead of the old disk ? Do I need another media manager as in tape?

Backup & Recovery :: RMAN Hot Backup Plus Archive Log Files?

Jan 11, 2008

I had a production db with archive logging enabled

SQL> select name,status
2 from v$archived_log;

NAME STATUS
---------------------------------------- -
D:ORACLEARCHIVE_ORCL11_13.DBF A
D:ORACLEARCHIVE_ORCL11_14.DBF A
D:ORACLEARCHIVE_ORCL11_15.DBF A

[code]...

So i need to restore archivelogs by using sequence

RMAN>RESTORE ARCHIVELOG FROM SEQUENCE 20 UNTIL SEQUENCE 28;
So the restore is completed successfully
So its very hard to monitor archivelog files
i feel i should have included all archivelog files while taking RMAN backup

RMAN >backup database plus archivelog all delete input;

but the problem is my RMAN backup is already 360GB in size and it takes 4-5 hrs to complete .so i need to schedule RMAN backup at one time (e.g sunday) ,delete the archivelog files older than sundayand now schedule the archivelog backup at another day (e.g wed &sat)

my question is where i have to change my script to backup all avaialbe archivelog files if old archivelog files are deleted at os level?

RMAN> run {
2> allocate channel c1 type disk;
3> sql 'alter system archive log current';
4> backup archivelog all format 'D:oracleackuplog_t%t_s%s_p%p' delete input;
5> release channel c1;

SQL & PL/SQL :: Moving Files After Using UTL_FILE Package?

Feb 21, 2013

We have a p/slq procedure that reads a *.txt file using the UTL_FILE package. The contents of the file are then inserted into a database table.

At the end of the procedure we close the open file using UTL_FILE.FCLOSE.

There is a program (non-oracle)that attempts to move the file to a new location after being read into Oracle. The problem is that the application cannot move the file as the file is locked. ie message displays that the file is open and cannot be moved to a new location.

Is there anything else that we are missing besides the UTL_FILE.FCLOSE.

Moving Files On Physical Standby Database?

Oct 19, 2011

We're currently in a situation where the primary database server fs size does not match the standby database server fs size.

Standby database filesystem is almost 100% utilized, and we suggested to move some of the datafiles first to avoid threshold alerts and archive gaps.

Now, if we're gonna move datafiles on the physical standby, I believe the process would be stop managed redo apply -> shutdown standby -> OS move -> startup mount -> alter rename -> start managed redo apply. Is this correct? If not, how?

Also, would it have an effect if the controlfiles of primary and standby do not match because of the movement?

Moving Trace Files To Archive Location?

Aug 20, 2012

I am using Oracle RAC 11gR2.I am planing to move my old trace files to an archive location.

I have the below questions concerning the users and groups used by Oracle RAC when moving the trace files.It is related to the permissions but it is about oracle behavior.

The trace files of database (oracle user) are created as below:

284 -rw-r-----    1 oracle   asmadmin     283571 Aug 20 18:08 PPRD1_mmon_13893716.trc
   4 -rw-r-----    1 oracle   asmadmin        125 Aug 20 18:10 PPRD1_gcr0_11730998.trm
   4 -rw-r-----    1 oracle   asmadmin       2833 Aug 20 18:10 PPRD1_gcr0_11730998.trc
580 -rw-r-----    1 oracle   asmadmin     588489 Aug 20 18:12 PPRD1_lmhb_15859792.trm

[code]....

when moving the files using the oracle user it will be created as oracle:oinstall and not oracle:asmadmin since asmadmin is not a group of the oracle user.

1. How oracle created my trace and log files with permission oracle:asmadmin?

2. How should I move these files? I moved it using the Oracle user and it was created as oracle:oinstall with Operating system error "unable to duplicate owner and mode after move"

SQL & PL/SQL :: UTL_FILE.FGETATTR Can't Access Files On Network Disk After Database Server Was Restarted

Jun 20, 2012

I managed to upload images to a database server, resize them, copy to the application server and everything worked just fine - the Apex page successfully displayed images. Since last week, things have broken. This is how: there's a directory object which points to application server's directory:

SQL> select * from all_directories;

OWNER DIRECTORY_NAME DIRECTORY_PATH
------- ------------------------------ -----------------------------------
SYS SLIKE_4005_UPLOAD d:gisslike_4005_upload --> on a database server
SYS SLIKE_4005 \my-iasd$homegisslike_4005 --> on an application server

SQL>

I can use a directory located on a database server:

D:GISSlike_4005_upload>dir photo_resize.*
Volume in drive D is RAID
Volume Serial Number is 88F2-69D2
Directory of D:GISSlike_4005_upload
[code]....

How come it doesn't work? I was absent last week, database server was restarted for some reason (there were Windows' updates which required restarting). After that, all applications (lucky us, just two of them, but in multiple procedures/functions) return FALSE for UTL_FILE.FGETATTR.

We recreated directory objects, but that didn't work (UNC or not, no difference). I Googled quite a lot, read Metalink notes - nothing I did solved the problem.

what these OS updates were about; maybe they are not to be blamed at all. Both servers (database & application) run MS Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition Service Pack 2. In the meantime, a colleague developed a workaround (it uses UTL_HTTP) which works, but it is MUCH slower than the previous UTL_FILE.FGETATTR option.

Why don't we keep these images on the database server (instead of the application server)?I was told that Apache is incapable of accessing mapped network directories so we used what we could.

RMAN Disk / Tape?

Apr 25, 2011

I just made the swich to have my RMAN backup directly to tape and here are the parameters I have set.

CODECONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO 'SBT_TAPE';
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE SBT_TAPE TO '%F';
CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE 'SBT_TAPE' PARALLELISM 4 BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET;
CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE SBT_TAPE TO 1; # default

[code]...

When I do an active clone I need to set my parameters back to the following in order to makeit work.

CODECONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default
CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION FOR DATABASE OFF; # default

[code]....

Instead of un-doing my RMAN TAPE settings, is there something I can do in my active clone script to tell it read/write from/to disk instead of tape. I tried allocatiing disk channels but was unable to get my script to work. The only way it worked was to back out all the tape settings and put everything back to disk.

CODErman catalog=rman/rman@prod target=sys/sys@prod << EOT
connect auxiliary sys/sys@dev
duplicate target database to dev from active database nofilenamecheck
pfile=/u01/app/oracle/product/11g/dbs/initdev.ora;

Backup & Recovery :: Restore DB From Control Files Using Symantec Backup Exec

Jun 10, 2013

I am having a issue, we are trying to restore our db from control files using Symantec Backup exec, but job fails giving me error go to table spaces select all table spaces and unchecked roll forward.

i am unable to find way to uncheck the table spaces. Here is the complete description.

Cause

The system catalog tablespace "syscatspace" contains all of the system catalog information for the tables. Syscatspace needs to be rolled forward first, and then the other tablespaces must be rolled forward.

Solution

Workaround:

When the restore operation is run from a tablespace level backup, perform the rollforward for the syscatspace tablespace first and then for other tablespaces.

Execute the rollforward operation as a DBA operation. The sequence of the recovery process should be as follows:

1. Select all tablespaces, uncheck the rollforward option and run the restore job.
2. Run the rollforward operation as a DBA initiated operation:

rollforward syscatspace to point in time / end of logs. e.g. db2 => rollforward database UEXIT to end of logs and complete Tablespace (SYSCATSPACE) online

3. Perform rollforward of all other tablespaces.

e.g. db2 => rollforward database UEXIT to end of logs and complete tablespace (SYSTOO LSPACE,USERSPACE1) online

Refer to IBM DB2 documentation for more information on DBA-initiated operations.

Backup & Recovery :: Changing Location Of Data And Temp Files From Auto-backup Of Control-file?

Jan 26, 2012

I have an oracle autoback of controlfile and spfile. I am trying to restore the production database using this backup, into a new server with a different directory structure.

I have completed the following steps in the restore process.

1. Creating a pfile from spfile

2. Changing the the location of cdump, udump, bdump and the control files ( there are three )

3. Then creating a spfile from this pfile

I am stuck on the next step where to rename all the datafiles and tempfile and restore the database. Following is what I did.

After mounting the database in RMAN, tried to run the following.

RMAN> run
2> {
3> allocate channel c1 device type disk
4> ;
5> @/home/oracle/rman_scripts/newloc.rman
6> SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 1 TO '/u02/oradata/dorian/system01.dbf';
7> SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 2 TO '/u02/oradata/dorian/undotbs01.dbf';
8> SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 3 TO '/u02/oradata/dorian/sysaux01.dbf';
9> SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 4 TO '/u02/oradata/dorian/users01.dbf';

[code]....

I am getting the following error message.

Backup & Recovery :: Querying V$archived_logs To Backup ARC Files?

Nov 28, 2011

When we backup .arc files we issue a RMAN command similiar to this:

KEEP_ARCHIVE_HOURS=2
rman <<EOT
connect target ....
connect catalog ...
sql "alter system archive log current";

[code]....

The problem is at times there may not be any archive files that meet this criteria and RMAN throws an error

RMAN-06004: ORACLE error from recovery catalog database: RMAN-20242: specification does not match any archived log in the recovery catalog

I was considering using the following code to see if there are any available .arc files that meet the backup criteria.

set pagesize 0 feedback off verify off heading off echo off;
select count(1) from v$archived_log where
COMPLETION_TIME < sysdate-$KEEP_ARCHIVE_HOURS/24
and backup_count = 0 and name is not null;

While testing on several systems, I found that the above-mentioned query picked up some redo-logs (*.rdo) I can only assume that these redo logs were used for a DB recovery.

/u05/oradata/dmartdev/redo_01a.rdo120724-JUL-1125-SEP-11
/u15/oradata/dmartdev/redo_01b.rdo120724-JUL-1125-SEP-11
/u06/oradata/dmartdev/redo_02a.rdo120824-JUL-1125-SEP-11
/u16/oradata/dmartdev/redo_02b.rdo120824-JUL-1125-SEP-11
/u07/oradata/dmartdev/redo_03a.rdo120324-JUL-1125-SEP-11

[code]....

I have a few questions:

1) Is my assumtion correct about the .rdo files in the v$archived_logs table

2) I would hate to add special logic and look for something like name substr(name, *.arc) (pardon the syntax). Therefore, is there a way to get rid of these *.rdo files?

Backup & Recovery :: RMAN Duplicate Set Until Time Using Wrong Backup Piece Name To Restore?

Feb 26, 2012

We are doing RMAN Duplicate set until time to refresh daily our test database for our developers and it taking long time to finish. We noticed on the restore log that RMAN was using a day old old backup pieces to refresh the test database and don't immediately use the latest backup pieces instead.

For additional details here's the rman duplicate command we are using which we run daily(mon-sat) at 4am once daily full backup on production completed.

RMAN Duplicate commands:
run
{
set until time "to_date(to_char(sysdate,'Mon DD YYYY') || ' 04:00:00', 'Mon DD YYYY HH24:MI:SS')";
allocate auxiliary channel ch1 type disk;
duplicate target database to testdb;
}
exit

Is there a way on how to let RMAN use the latest backup pieces instead?
