SQL & PL/SQL :: Remove Line Breaks In Select Statement?

Sep 9, 2013

I have a simple column in a table which store a description. This can include line breaks so when you select from it, it looks similar to below

'Part number: X
Batch: Y
Size: Z'

I would like to be able to create a view (so not having any impact on the original data) to return it as below

'Part number: X Batch: Y Size: Z'

Remove Count In First Line

Nov 27, 2009

My query is suppose to capture the student's number, date of birth, and number of students which that students mentors. I am suppose to show only the 5 oldest students

SELECT s.std_num, s.birth_date, COUNT(s2.mentor_num)
From Student s left outer join Student s2
on s2.mentor_num=s.std_num
GROUP BY s.std_num, s.birth_date
ORDER BY s.birth_date ASC;

This function works but the problem is in displaying the five records because whenever I apply the rownum<=5 function the counter returns incorrect results. I tried writing another query to fix it but I could not dispay the counter anymore

SELECT ROWNUM as SENIOR, s.std_num, s.birth_date, COUNT(s2.mentor_num)
FROM (SELECT s1.std_num, s1.birth_date, COUNT
(e2.super_id)
From Student s left outer join Student s2
on s2.mentor_num=s1.std_num
GROUP BY s1.std_num, s1.birth_date
ORDER BY s1.birth_date ASC) S
WHERE row_num<=5;

This code only works if I remove the count in the first line but I need to display the number in my result.

SQL & PL/SQL :: Select Statement Is Blocking A Delete Statement

Jan 11, 2012

I am using JDBC to run a few queries from my Java program (multi-threaded one).I am facing an issue where a select statement is blocking a delete statement. From the java code point of view, there are 2 different threads accessing the same tables (whith different DB connection objects).

When the block occurs (which i was able to find out from the java thread dump that there is a lock on oracle), the below is the output:

SQL> SELECT TO_CHAR(sysdate, 'DD-MON-YYYY HH24:MI:SS')
2 || ' User '||s1.username || '@' || s1.machine
3 || ' ( SID= ' || s1.sid || ' ) with the statement: ' || sqlt2.sql_text
||' is blocking the SQL statement on '|| s2.username || '@'
4 5 || s2.machine || ' ( SID=' || s2.sid || ' ) blocked SQL -> '
6 ||sqlt1.sql_text AS blocking_status FROM v$lock l1, v$session s1, v$lock l2 ,
7 v$session s2,v$sql sqlt1, v$sql sqlt2
8 WHERE s1.sid =l1.sid
9 AND s2.sid =l2.sid AND sqlt1.sql_id= s2.sql_id
AND sqlt2.sql_id= s1.prev_sql_id AND l1.BLOCK =1
10 AND l2.request > 0 AND l1.id1 = l2.id1 AND l2.id2 = l2.id2;
[code]...

From the above it can be seen that a select statement is blocking a delete. Unless the select is select for Update, it should not block other statements is not it ?

Client Tools :: Different Charactersets Show Line-break In Select Result

i have a little curiosity in result of a select statement.

One database has following characterset settings:

NLS_CHARACTERSET WE8ISO8859P15
NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET AL16UTF16

and the following select statement results in multiple lines:

SQL> select INSTANCE_NAME,STATUS from v$instance;
INSTANCE_NAME
------------------------------------------------
STATUS
------------------------------------
BUP
OPEN

Another database has following characterset settings:

NLS_CHARACTERSET UTF8
NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET AL16UTF16

and the same select shows only a 2 line result:

SQL> select INSTANCE_NAME,STATUS from v$instance;
INSTANCE_NAME STATUS
---------------- ------------------------------------
HPSMP OPEN

Both databases are version 10.2.0.4 and both are running on HPUX 11.31.Why do we get this differents in showing the result?

Our problem is that the package-start scripts from HP, to start a database, check the result of the select statement above and if we have the multiline result the check gives an error and stops the package again.

Replication :: Breaks When Subscribers Updated

May 10, 2012

i am more than ready to RTFM, if any of the members give me the right pointers to proceed. My company has a replication issue, which my manager asked me to check anything i can. This can be pure architectural question where i will have redesign the application, i am also ready to read on any design patterns and change code

Basically, we have a Primary Publisher in US and the Subscriber in UK. I am told that the replication setup is MASTER - MASTER. Any updates in US will update the servers in UK and vice versa. The .Net application is client machine hosted application which does the changes in the local server respective to its geographical domain i.e applications running in U.K will update the U.K server only. Once the update is done, the data is replicated to other server. It works well most of the time, but sometimes when the user is updating the same record in US and U.K at the same time. The Replication breaks, since before updating either server, if the row in the table is in different due to an user update, replication breaks.

point me to any solutions either Oracle Replication design wise or .net application design wise.

case when gcrs.STREAM_NAME like 'NON-GT%' THEN 'NON-GT' ELSE gcrs.STREAM_NAME END as ISSUE_DIVISION_2

Spatial :: Convert Multi-line To Simple Line

Feb 13, 2013

Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0

We are processing spatial data from another source to display in our GIS environment. The data is a set of multi lines. The gtype is 2006. A typical geometry looks like:

SDO_GTYPE     2006
SDO_SRID      31370
SDO_POINT.X   NULL
SDO_POINT.Y   NULL
SDO_POINT.Z   NULL
SDO_ELEM_INFO (1,2,1, 7,2,1)
SDO_ORDINATES (105094.84, 195084.96,
105094.54, 195080.22,
105094.84, 195084.96,
105094.84, 195084.96,
105094.68, 195082.47 )

Now, this is not an actual multiline... it's just encoded as a multi line, but if you look at the coordinates you'll see that the end point of the first line is the same as the beginning of the second line (105094.84, 195084.96).

A better way to encode this geometry would be:

SDO_GTYPE     2002 <---
SDO_SRID      31370
SDO_POINT.X   NULL
SDO_POINT.Y   NULL
SDO_POINT.Z   NULL
SDO_ELEM_INFO (1,2,1)
SDO_ORDINATES (105094.84, 195084.96,
105094.54, 195080.22,
105094.84, 195084.96, <---
105094.68, 195082.47 )

Is there a standard function in Oracle that does this conversion for me? Or do I have to write my own :)

Select Statement Errors

select t.warehouse_id,

c.product_name

SQL & PL/SQL :: Select In Case Statement

Feb 11, 2011

I have the following tables:

create table lookups (code varchar2(20), amount number);

insert into lookups values ('Rent' , 500);
insert into lookups values ('Breakpoint' , 10);

create table products (id number, cost number, year varchar2(4));

insert into products values (1, 1000, '2011');
insert into products values (1, 2000, '2011');
insert into products values (2, 100, '2011');
insert into products values (3, 50, '2011');

commit;

I want to write a query which lists the IDs and the sum(cost), and a Y/N indicator which is set to 'Y' IF sum(cost) > ( (lookups.rent value) * (100 - lookups.breakpoint value))/100

I have written this query:

SELECT id,
sum(cost)cost,
year,
CASE
WHEN cost >
((SELECT amount
[code]....... ORDER BY id;

This returns

ID COST YEAR YN
--------- ---------- ---- -
1 1000 2011 Y
1 2000 2011 Y
2 100 2011 N
3 50 2011 N

The YN is correct, but it needs to sum the amounts. So there should only be one row for id1 = 3000.e.g.

ID COST YEAR YN
--------- ---------- ---- -
1 3000 2011 Y
2 100 2011 N
3 50 2011 N

I am not sure how to do this. Or is there a better way of doing this than using CASE.
