Oracle 9i SGA_MAX_SIZE And DB_CACHE_SIZE

Sep 21, 2010

I've done lots of reading about these two parameters, SGA_MAX_SIZE and DB_CACHE_SIZE.

What I understand now is, that setting db_cache_size to a target value and setting all other buffer cache setting to 0 will enable Oracle 9i to automatically manage buffer cache values, right? This is, per meta link document 223299.1 the most important parameter in Oracle 9i regarding memory management.

Now, SGA_MAX_SIZE set the maximum value at wich I can increase the db_cache_size to?

The question is ; WHY? Why should I allocate 1G of RAM to my oracle instance and not set the db_cache_size to the exact same value? What happens with the difference in memory between the SGA_MAX_SIZE and the DB_CACHE_SIZE, ex :

SGA_MAX_SIZE = 1000M
DB_CACHE_SIZE = 500M

What happens with the 500M left over, is it used for anything ?

I am having 11gr2 database on a 2 node RAC cluster . OS is RHEL version 5.8When i change the SGA_MAX_SIZE to 5GB, after i bounce it shows as 15GB.

I am trying to set my SGA_TARGET and SGA_MAX_SIZE to 5G. But after bouncing SGA_MAX_SIZE is showing as 15GB and not as 5GB

I also tried edit in pfile and then create spfile and started up with spfile. But still same i am observing.

Unable To Set Sga_max_size Parameter Value?

May 24, 2013

To tune the OID11g the DB parameter recommendation is :

sga_target Minimum 60% of RAM
sga_max_size Minimum 60% of RAM
db_cache_size Minimum 60% of RAM

So what is RAM size..is that the RAM size on the linux BOX which is 8 GB in my case
or RAM size assigned to Oracle DB?

If I take RAM size 8 GB I am not able to modify the parameter. I am getting below error:

SQL> alter system set sga_max_size=4916M scope=both;
alter system set sga_max_size=4916M scope=both
*
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-02095: specified initialization parameter cannot be modified

how to check that total memory assigned to Oracle DB?

How Is Relationship Between MEMORY_TARGET And SGA_MAX_SIZE Parameters

Jun 28, 2012

I was just wondering how is the relationship between MEMORY_TARGET and SGA_MAX_SIZE parameters, if exists any at all.I set my memory parameters as:

# Enable AMM
MEMORY_MAX_SIZE=10G
MEMORY_TARGET=4G
# Disable ASMM
SGA_TARGET=0
SGA_MAX_SIZE=0

So I bounce my instances and when I checked the parameter SGA_MAX_SIZE, Oracle automatically set a value of 2456M to it:

sga_max_size big integer 2456M
sga_target big integer 0

Reading MOS ID 443746.1, there is no clear mention about this relationship. It seems that Oracle automatically set SGA_MAX_SIZE as 60% of MEMORY_TARGET.

In am running Oracle 11gR2 (11.2.0.2.3) under Red Hat Linux.

Performance Tuning :: How To Configure SGA_MAX_SIZE Parameter

Sep 24, 2013

The Memory tuning advisor has recommended that I increase the size of the SGA_TARGET to 5G, from my current size of 3G.

SQL> select * from v$sga_target_advice order by sga_size;

SGA_SIZE SGA_SIZE_FACTOR ESTD_DB_TIME ESTD_DB_TIME_FACTOR ESTD_PHYSICAL_READS
---------- --------------- ------------ ------------------- -------------------
1536 .5 1555141 1.667 7251211
2304 .75 949130 1.0174 4572127
3072 1 932898 1 2258733
3840 1.25 930939 .9979 2168835
4608 1.5 929819 .9967 2005529
5376 1.75 929166 .996 2005529
6144 2 928980 .9958 2005529

7 rows selected.However, the SGA_MAX_SIZE parameter is set to 3G, so when I do:

SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET sga_target=5376M scope=both;
ALTER SYSTEM SET sga_target=5376M scope=both
*
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-02097: parameter cannot be modified because specified value is invalid
ORA-00823: Specified value of sga_target greater than sga_max_size

My database used spfile. I know that the procedure to change this is the following: Create pfile from spfile, shutdown immediate, change value in pfile, startup with pfile..However, the pfile does not have any parameter called max_sga_size. It only has the following:

<dbsid>.__sga_target=3221225472
*.sga_target=3221225472

how to change sga_max_size?

I notice that i have 2 versions of the libraries in OracleHomeBIN (one version 8, one version 11). The programs that start the OracleAgent,Service and DataGatherer call the old libraries but expect to find values that can be found only in new libraries.

PL/SQL :: Oracle SQL Template To Create Re-usable DDL / DML Scripts For Oracle Database

Jun 13, 2012

I have a requirement to put together a Oracle SQL template to create re-usable DDL/DML Scripts for Oracle databases.Only the Oracle DBA will be running the scripts so permissions is not an issue.

The workflow for any DDL is as follows:-

1) New Table

a. Check if the table exists from the system/admin views.

b. If table exists then give message "Table Exists"

c. If table does not exist then execute DDL code

2) Add Column

a. Check if Column exists for a given table from system/admin views

b. If column exists in the specified table,

b1. backup table.

b2. alter table to make changes to the column

b3. verify data or execute dml script convert from backup to the new change.

c. If Column does not exist

c1. backup table

c2. alter table to add column

c3. execute dml to populate column with default value.

The DML scripts are for populating base tables with data required for business operations.

3) Add new row

a. check if row exists by comparing old values of each column with new values to be added for the new record.

b. If exists, give message row exists

c. If not exists, add new record.

4) Update existing record (We have createtime columns in these tables so changes can be tracked)

a. check if row exists using primary key.

b. If exists,

b1. deactivate the record using the "active" column of the table

b2. Add new record with the changes required.

c. If does not exist, add new record with the changes required.

Oracle 9i To 10g Upgrade

Jul 3, 2010

I am trying to upgrade database from 9.2.0.7 to 10.2.0 in my test server. Here are the steps i am planning to do.

1. Export user data of production, Import in test db(ABC) using Destroy=Y Fromuser,touser parameter( this step just to refresh old test data)
2. Install 10g db, Use DBUA Utility of 10g to start upgrade>select 9i database which i want to upgrade
3. follow DBUA instruction ..create datafile paths, init.ora file, tnsnames,listener... same as the existing setup i have of 9i(so i can make replica of 9i in 10g)

question: I have another database(xyz) in test server its also in 9i, I don't want to upgrade that for now. so do i need to use one listener /tnasnames file of 10g and include setting of 9i in that 10g file ?

How to manage init,tnasnames,listener files setting in 2 db versions . Is there anything else i need to do to perform upgrade 9i-10g ? or its all ?

I will install just 10g database will import full export of 9i db. if i can do full import in 10g or should i just go for fromuser, tuser option to import? i believe for that i need to create datafiles, user,grant in new 10g db. I am not sure which option is best to perform 10g upgrade?

How To Patch Oracle 11g

Apr 19, 2012

I've been told by management this weekend I will be required to perform a complete patch of our Oracle 11g database.

Problem is I really have never installed / patched Oracle. I'm able to access pretty much any database here and interact with it from a SQL stand point so since I'm the only person in my entire office who knows SQL, they decided I can become their full blow DBA.

Currently the database is running a unpatched version:

Connected to:
Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production
With the Partitioning, OLAP, Data Mining and Real Application Testing options

SQL>

Once I download the latest patch (11.2.0.2.0) files from Oracle & perform a complete backup using RMAN:

RMAN> backup full as compressed backupset database plus archivelog;

How exactly does one properly patch / update Oracle 11g to the latest version?

Migration From Oracle 10g To 11g?

Apr 26, 2011

Our Application is on Oracle 10g and we are going to migrate to Oracle 11g.

1) As of now we are using ojdbc14.jar. So if we migrate can we use the same jar or is it mandatory with 11g to use either ojdbc5.jar or ojdbc6.jar. I guess these jar version depends on the version of jdk we are using. But we are using jdk1.5 and still we use ojdbc14.jar which is working fine. So is it like , Oracle 11g can support only jdk1.5 or jdk1.6 ?

2) Is there any effect on the coding part if we change ojdbc14.jar to ojdbc6.jar ?I have seen there are some extra classes used in ojdbc6.jar.

3) Also we are going to migrate the Oracle database from Solaris to AIX. Our application lies on Solaris.So is there any compatibility problem , if our application lies on Solaris and database on AIX ?
